If your controller or flight stick seems wrong in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, first check the mission’s flight control mode, then confirm that your exact device is supported on your platform. A stick being detected does not guarantee that its buttons, axes, or sensitivity can be configured the way you expect.
Start by checking the flight control mode
Before changing hardware or remapping controls, check the flight control mode selected when preparing the mission. Bandai Namco describes two modes with different steering behavior:
- Standard: Push the left stick left or right to turn.
- Expert: Roll the aircraft left or right with the left stick, then pitch up or down to turn. Bandai Namco says this mode allows a wider range of aerial maneuvers and more precise aircraft control.

Confirm your platform and exact device
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam; its worldwide release date was October 2, 2026, following early access on September 29, 2026. A peripheral that works on one platform is not automatically compatible with another, so check the exact model and platform edition rather than relying on a general “HOTAS” label. HORI ACE COMBAT 8 Flight Stick
HORI’s support page identifies the ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE Flight Stick, model SPF-034, as usable with PS5, PS4, and Windows 11 PC. HORI explicitly excludes other hardware platforms and specifies Windows 11 for PC use. That establishes the manufacturer’s stated platform compatibility, not a guarantee that every in-game input or configuration issue will be resolved. For model-specific setup and troubleshooting, use HORI’s support page and its linked manual.
Other sticks and controllers
Do not assume a particular HOTAS model or platform edition is officially supported based only on a community post or a third-party article. The available official information does not provide a complete universal HOTAS compatibility list. Check the current game support information and the manufacturer’s listing for your exact device and platform before buying, connecting, or attempting a workaround.

Separate detection from mapping problems
When a device appears to connect but does not control the aircraft as expected, identify what is actually failing before changing settings:

- No response at all: Confirm that the device is intended for your platform, then follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions.
- Aircraft responds, but steering feels wrong: Recheck Standard versus Expert mode; the two modes use different steering behavior.
- Some buttons or axes work, but others do not: Treat this as a mapping or configuration issue, not proof that every control is supported. The official sources available do not establish a complete binding list or a guaranteed in-game remapping path for every device.
- Controls work but sensitivity feels wrong: Consult the game’s current menus and device documentation. A sensitivity or dead-zone setting for every platform and device has not been established in the available official guidance.
Use a PC remapping workaround only as an optional community approach
A Steam community post describes routing a physical stick, throttle, and buttons through Joystick Gremlin and vJoy, hiding the physical devices with HIDHide, and presenting a virtual Xbox controller through x360ce. The author also describes a multi-step setup that includes splitting a throttle axis. Other users report different results, including a recognized X-56 with missing keybinding or sensitivity controls. These are community reports, not an official support procedure or a guaranteed fix. Choose the next troubleshooting step
- Identify your platform and exact peripheral model. Note the platform edition, not just the product family name.
- Check the selected flight control mode. Confirm whether the aircraft is set to Standard or Expert before judging its turning behavior.
- Use the device maker’s support page and manual. Follow instructions for your model and platform; for HORI’s SPF-034, the stated PC platform is Windows 11.
- Describe the remaining symptom precisely. Distinguish no detection from incorrect steering, missing button or axis inputs, and sensitivity concerns.
