ContentNotFoundError means wkhtmltopdf could not load at least one page resource. The final line, often Exit with code 1 due to network error: ContentNotFoundError, is not a diagnosis. Find the specific URL or file path in stderr, then test that resource from the same machine, container, user account and runtime that launches wkhtmltopdf. Repair its path, permissions, network access or authentication before changing error-handling settings.
Find the resource that failed
Do not troubleshoot from the final error line alone. Capture complete standard error output:

cat wkhtmltopdf.stderrLook immediately before the final ContentNotFoundError for messages such as Warning: Failed to load ... or Blocked access to file .... Record the exact URL or path, including capitalization, query parameters and fragments. A browser test on your laptop is insufficient if production runs as another user inside a container.
Record the execution context
- Run
wkhtmltopdf --versionand save the output. - Note the operating system, distribution package or installer, wrapper (such as pdfkit) and wrapper version.
- Save the complete command line, generated HTML and stderr.
- Identify the operating-system user, working directory, container image, proxy variables and mounted directories.
The project’s support guidance asks for version information and a detailed reproducible test case when reporting a problem: wkhtmltopdf support.

Separate local-file failures from remote failures
Local files and relative URLs
Check that every referenced image, stylesheet, font and script exists from the converter’s point of view:

PYRelative URLs resolve against the document base URL, not necessarily your shell’s current directory. Prefer a correctly formed file:///absolute/path URL or an HTTP-served asset with a known base. Check case-sensitive spelling, symlinks, permissions on every parent directory and whether a service account can read the file.
wkhtmltopdf’s load.blockLocalFileAccess setting prevents local or piped input from accessing other local files. Review the HTML and explicitly allow only the directories required by the document. Do not grant unrestricted filesystem access to untrusted HTML.

A URL returning a login page, 403, 404 or an endless redirect can appear as a load failure. If the site is private, pass the required headers or cookies through wkhtmltopdf and verify that doing so is permitted.
Isolate the failing reference
- Create a minimal HTML file containing only the suspected image, stylesheet, font or script.
- Remove unrelated JavaScript, CSS, fonts and wrapper options.
- Run the minimal file directly with the command-line executable.
- Add resources back one at a time until the failure returns.

Allow required local resources without opening the whole filesystem
Grant access only to the asset directory required by your document. The exact command-line switches depend on the installed build; inspect wkhtmltopdf --extended-help and your package documentation for the supported local-file options. Keep the input and assets in a dedicated directory, use absolute paths, and avoid processing untrusted HTML with filesystem access.
The project documents security restrictions and recommends operating-system controls such as AppArmor to limit which files wkhtmltopdf can read and whether it can make network connections: page settings and project status. Its security warning is explicit: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!”

Choose load-error handling deliberately
--load-error-handling accepts abort, skip or ignore. These modes decide what conversion does after a load failure; none makes an inaccessible URL or file reachable.

One archived report shows ContentNotFoundError even with ignore; therefore, do not treat it as a universal fix. After using a non-abort mode, open every page and verify images, fonts, links and totals.
Wrappers such as PDFKit or pdfkit
Wrappers can change the input method, working directory and generated switches. Log the exact command they generate, then run that command directly. Compare:
- A direct file input with the wrapper’s file input.
- A direct file input with HTML passed from a string or pipe.
- Absolute asset URLs with relative URLs.
- stderr from both runs.
An archived Python/pdfkit report contains a blocked-file warning and an about:blank protocol error when using from_string. It demonstrates that input method and resource access can interact, but it does not establish one wrapper fix for every environment. Preserve the generated command and minimal HTML when seeking support.

Version and security considerations
The official download page identifies the 0.12.6 series as stable and dates that release June 11, 2020: downloads. Package repositories may carry different builds, so verify your distribution’s package metadata before upgrading. An official issue reported a local-file same-origin weakness affecting versions through 0.12.5 and associated the fix with milestone 0.12.6. Treat old binaries as a security concern, especially when converting user-controlled input.
The status page says the QtWebKit foundation needs catch-up and points toward more modern browser-rendering options. That is project guidance, not a guarantee that any particular replacement fits your CSS, JavaScript or deployment requirements.

Performance and reliability practices
- Serve stable assets from a local, authenticated endpoint when external network variability is unnecessary.
- Use deterministic absolute URLs and pin the asset version.
- Keep a minimal regression HTML file for every previously fixed resource failure.
- Set realistic command timeouts and log stderr, exit status and output size.
- Validate that the PDF opens, has the expected page count and contains required text or images.
- Use AppArmor or equivalent mandatory access control to deny filesystem and network access that the job does not need.

When to report a wkhtmltopdf bug
Report only after reproducing with a minimal HTML case and a direct command. Include the version, operating system, install source, complete command, full stderr, expected result, actual result and whether the resource is local or remote. Remove secrets from HTML, headers and cookies while preserving the failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does --load-error-handling ignore fix ContentNotFoundError?
No. It changes continuation behavior after a failed load. The underlying URL or file remains unavailable, and the resulting PDF may omit content.
Why does the page work in Chrome but not wkhtmltopdf?
Chrome and wkhtmltopdf may differ in TLS support, JavaScript timing, cookies, user agent, proxy configuration and local-file permissions. Test the exact resource from wkhtmltopdf’s runtime.
Should I enable unrestricted local-file access?
