Then check client discovery, whether the cache Mac is awake, network addressing, storage, and management restrictions. Resetting cached data is a later diagnostic step—not a fix for discovery or network problems.
Check the Content Caching settings and status
- On the Mac hosting the cache, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing.
- Turn on Content Caching, then open its information or options panel.
- Wait for the status indicator to turn green. Apple describes green as on; yellow as unavailable or starting or stopping; dark gray as moving data; and light gray as off. These states help separate an inactive or unavailable service from one that is moving data.
- Choose the mode that matches what clients need: All Content, Only Shared Content, or Only iCloud Content.
Apple distinguishes shared content—software and app downloads from Apple—from iCloud content such as users’ photos and documents. iCloud cache data is received, stored, and transmitted encrypted; the cache cannot decrypt it. Turning off iCloud caching immediately removes cached iCloud data.
What each cache mode is for
| Setting | Content it caches | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| All Content | Shared Apple software and app content, plus iCloud content | Clients need both types. |
| Only Shared Content | Apple software and app downloads | You want to cache downloads but not users’ iCloud items. |
| Only iCloud Content | Users’ iCloud items | You want to cache iCloud content but not shared software and app downloads. |
Labels and panel layout can vary by macOS version. Apple’s guide, Change Content Caching settings on Mac, describes the available settings.
Mac content cache not showing up? Give clients time to find it
Apple devices discover caches automatically through a lookup service. Restart a client device after enabling the cache or changing its settings to prompt immediate discovery. Without a restart, a device may take some time to notice the change.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A client not using this cache does not necessarily mean the service is broken. If a cache cannot be found at a given rank, Apple devices can use another cache or download content from Apple. In a managed or multi-subnet environment, the discovery path and client policy may affect which cache a device finds.
Make sure the cache Mac is awake
Content Caching works only while its Mac is awake. Check the status indicator and the host’s power or sleep behavior before changing advanced settings. For a headless Mac that must remain awake, Apple points to the caffeinate command-line utility. Consult the Apple settings guide for the current macOS instructions.

Check network addressing and discovery scope
Apple documents a specific address requirement for each content cache: it must have either a local IP address in RFC 1918 private space, or a non-RFC 1918 local address identical to its public IP address. Caching is unsupported when a non-RFC 1918 local address differs from the public address.
Apple lists these private IPv4 ranges in its Content Caching deployment documentation:

On managed or multi-subnet networks, review whether Local Subnets Only, listen ranges, peer or parent cache configuration, DNS discovery, or other policy intentionally limits which clients can use the cache. These settings depend on the network design; there is no universal router or firewall change that fixes every discovery issue. Ask the network administrator to check site-specific routing, DNS, and policy.
Check cache storage, volume, and size limit
In the Content Caching settings, check the selected cache volume, configured size limit, and storage used. Apple allows the administrator to choose another available volume when multiple volumes are present. When the configured cache limit or available space on the volume is reached, content may be removed to make room; eviction alone does not establish that the cache is corrupt.

Moving an existing cache temporarily stops caching while its data moves. An external volume is an option if you need another storage location, not a requirement and not a remedy for a sleeping host, unsupported addressing, or client discovery delays. See Apple’s cache settings guidance before changing the location or size.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why isn’t my Mac using the content cache? Check for activity
Before resetting anything, look for evidence that the cache has served data. Open Activity Monitor and select its Cache view. Apple identifies Data Served and Data Served From Cache as activity indicators; nonzero served values mean the cache is working. If the Cache view is missing, enable Content Caching and reopen Activity Monitor.

For administration, Apple documents the AssetCacheManagerUtil commands below. Verify syntax and applicability against the installed macOS release before using them; Apple’s command-line guide displays a publication date of October 27, 2021.
AssetCacheManagerUtil settings— display settings.AssetCacheManagerUtil status— display status.AssetCacheManagerUtil canActivate— check whether activation is possible.AssetCacheManagerUtil isActivated— check activation state.
Apple also documents activate, deactivate, reloadSettings, flushCache, flushPersonalCache, and flushSharedCache. Use those actions deliberately: flush commands remove cached content, which must be fetched again as needed. They do not correct sleep, addressing, discovery-delay, or management-policy problems. For deeper diagnostics, inspect the com.apple.AssetCache subsystem in Console or with the log command. Follow Apple’s deployment guide, and do not change undocumented plist settings.
Check management restrictions
If the cache Mac belongs to an organization, a configuration profile or declarative management setting may prevent Content Caching from activating or may constrain its behavior. Ask the organization’s administrator to inspect the applicable management policy. A user-level switch cannot override a restriction imposed by management.
How do I clear the Mac content cache?
Clear or flush cached data only when there is a specific reason to remove it, such as an administrator-directed cache reset after checking status, activity, storage, and policy. A flush removes content; clients may need to download it again. It is not a first-line fix for a cache that is not discovered, a host that sleeps, an address that does not meet Apple’s requirement, or a management restriction. For the available reset controls and their effects, use Apple’s Content Caching settings guide and deployment guide.
