If the same error returns, use its code and timing to choose a targeted fix. Back up important files before troubleshooting, especially before using recovery options.
Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends running the automated Windows Update troubleshooter first. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run next to Windows Update. The troubleshooter may open in Get Help and guide you through checks.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter using the Settings path above.
- Restart the PC after it completes.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the update still fails, note the exact error code and whether the problem began after a particular update or change. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance maps common codes to possible causes and steps; a code is a clue, not a complete diagnosis.
Back up important files before more involved fixes
Microsoft advises backing up personal files before troubleshooting. Copy important files to a USB drive or back them up with OneDrive. A backup protects your data; it does not repair Windows or fix the update itself.

Choose a fix based on the error code
Use the code shown in Windows Update or its failure details. The causes below are Microsoft’s stated associations, not guarantees that every occurrence has the same cause.

Microsoft’s code-specific troubleshooting page contains the full directions, including the System File Checker and cache procedure. Use those instructions for the code on your PC rather than applying every listed fix to every error.

Clear the Windows Update cache for 0x8007000d
Microsoft’s cache procedure stops the Windows Update service, clears the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starts the service again. Follow the complete Microsoft instructions carefully; clearing the folder contents is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a general first action for all update failures.
If the update is stuck or unusually slow
For 0x800705b4, Microsoft identifies a slow or interrupted update as a possible issue. Check that the PC remains connected to the internet and allow the update process time to complete. If it fails, run the troubleshooter, restart, and retry. A progress screen that has not changed does not, by itself, establish which underlying problem is responsible.

Use the right Microsoft tool for the update type
Windows Update Assistant is for manually installing a feature update on a compatible PC, such as when that update has not arrived automatically. It is limited to x86/64 devices and does not run on ARM-based PCs. For quality updates, use Windows Update in Settings. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant guidance before using it.
Repair Windows with a reinstall of the current version
If ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve the failure, Windows 11 may offer Fix problems using Windows Update. This reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings, according to Microsoft. The option may not appear on every installation.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Check whether Fix problems using Windows Update is available and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while the process runs.
Check Microsoft’s repair reinstall instructions for the current availability and process details.

If the issue started immediately after installing a particular update, uninstalling that recent update may help. Microsoft also lists System Restore as an option where available; it rolls back system files and settings without changing personal files. Recovery options depend on the device and its configuration. Consult Microsoft’s Windows recovery options before choosing a rollback.

When to stop and reassess
- If the error code changes after a fix, use the new code to select the next step.
- If Windows Update Assistant is unavailable or the PC uses ARM, do not try to force that tool; use the supported update path for the device.
- If a repair or rollback option is absent, availability can vary; check the current Settings screen and Microsoft’s linked recovery guidance.
- Before a recovery step or any action you are unsure about, make sure important files are backed up.
