RPCSX describes itself as an experimental emulator for PS4 and PS5 games, and says booting games from its VSH is still a work in progress. The steps below focus on shadPS4, so use them only if that is your project; game support and fixes do not automatically transfer between emulators.
Confirm the emulator and game before changing settings
Check the project name and version shown in the app or its official download page. The shadPS4 repository calls it an early PlayStation 4 emulator and notes that its core does not include a GUI. RPCSX is a separate project; its FAQ describes it as experimental and says development is ongoing.
For shadPS4, start with the exact game’s entry in the compatibility resource linked from the project. Check the latest game-specific status and reports rather than assuming that a game works because another title starts. The project warns that many games do not work and that working games can still have emulation issues.
Check whether your PC meets shadPS4’s minimum requirements
The shadPS4 Quickstart lists these minimums. They are thresholds, not performance targets or a promise that a particular game will run smoothly.

These requirements are from the shadPS4 Quickstart, accessed in 2026. Meeting them does not guarantee that your game is compatible or free of stutter, crashes, black screens, or graphical faults.
Update drivers and check which GPU the emulator uses
Outdated graphics drivers can interfere with shadPS4, including drivers for a GPU that is not currently in use. Update the drivers for your system’s graphics hardware, then confirm that shadPS4 is using the intended GPU if your computer has more than one. The exact GPU-selection controls depend on your operating system and installed build; consult the relevant system or build documentation rather than assuming one universal menu path.

If shadPS4 cannot detect a graphics card, first verify that the selected GPU and its driver support the Vulkan version and extensions listed in the Quickstart. If those prerequisites are absent, changing game settings is unlikely to address the underlying issue.
Use logs to narrow down crashes and other faults
When an issue persists, reproduce it and gather the emulator log instead of reporting only that the game is “slow” or “broken.” The developer documentation identifies the emulator’s user/log directory and names shadps4.log, shad_log.txt, and a game-specific log. For performance testing, it describes starting without debugging; for Vulkan diagnostics, it mentions validation-related settings.

- Reproduce the problem with the affected game and note the emulator version and the point at which it occurs.
- Look in the emulator’s
user/logdirectory for the relevant general or game-specific log. - Use the project’s issue tracker to check for a matching report or submit the relevant error details and reproducible symptoms.
Use the developer documentation for the project’s logging and diagnostic guidance. Validation diagnostics can help investigate Vulkan problems, but they are not a universal performance fix.
Apply only fixes that match the game and emulator version
Compatibility changes as the emulator develops, and a workaround reported for one game or version may not apply to another. Before applying a tweak, compare the game’s current compatibility report with your emulator version and the reported symptoms. The official sources do not establish a universal setting that fixes poor performance, stutter, crashes, black screens, or graphical errors, nor do they provide a guaranteed frame rate or a dated aggregate compatibility percentage.

Will a PS5 controller fix an emulator problem?
No controller change resolves a game-compatibility or graphics-performance fault by itself. The shadPS4 documentation says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box and that keyboard and mouse mappings can be customized. It does not establish that a PS5 controller purchase fixes general emulator problems. See the project’s controls documentation for supported input guidance.
