If Cypress commands fail after cy.session(), the page may simply be blank: with testIsolation enabled, visit the route you need after restoring the session. For 401 errors, check that login completes inside setup and that validate proves the restored session is authenticated. The fixes depend on whether Cypress restored the wrong session, saved incomplete browser data, or was expected to share a cache across runs or machines.
What cy.session() saves—and what it does not
cy.session() runs setup, saves cookies, localStorage, and sessionStorage, and restores that browser data for a matching session ID. It does not save or load the application page itself. When testIsolation is enabled, Cypress clears the page; visit the route under test after the session call before interacting with the app.
Use the setup callback to perform login and assert that it succeeded. Use validate to verify authentication after a session is created or restored. This separates a login flow that never completed from a session that was later rejected.
Start by identifying the failure
- Blank page or failing commands: check
testIsolationand whether the test visits its route aftercy.session(). - 401 after restoring: check that setup waits for login to complete and validation checks authenticated access.
- Wrong account or role: check whether the session ID distinguishes all inputs that change the resulting login state.
- Missing cookies or storage: inspect whether the session was created, restored, or recreated, and compare saved data with the data currently applied.
- Unexpected cross-spec behavior: confirm that the expectation is reuse within one run on one machine, not persistence across runs or CI machines.
Cypress’s cy.session() API documentation puts the blank-page fix plainly: “When testIsolation is enabled, ensure that you’re calling cy.visit() after calling cy.session(), otherwise your tests will be running on a blank page.”

Fix commands failing after cy.session()
With test isolation enabled, restoration leaves the browser data available but does not navigate to the application. Add a visit after the session call, then assert the page state your test needs.
beforeEach(() => {
cy.session('user', () => {
cy.visit('/login')
cy.get('[name=email]').type(Cypress.env('email'))
cy.get('[name=password]').type(Cypress.env('password'), { log: false })
cy.get('button[type=submit]').click()
cy.location('pathname').should('eq', '/dashboard')
}, {
validate() {
cy.request('/api/me').its('status').should('eq', 200)
},
})
cy.visit('/dashboard')
})
The assertion inside setup establishes that the login flow reached its expected destination before Cypress stores the browser data. The final cy.visit() loads the page for the test after either a newly created or restored session.
If testIsolation is false
When testIsolation is disabled, Cypress does not clear the page before setup, though it still clears cookies and storage before setup. A visit is not required solely to reload the page after cy.session(). Disabling isolation is not a general session fix: previous tests can affect later tests, so keep each test’s state explicit.
Fix 401 errors after session restoration
A 401 usually means the browser data does not represent an authenticated session, or setup ended before authentication was fully established. Make setup wait for a visible login success condition, such as the authenticated URL or a user indicator. Then make validate check protected access. If validation fails on a restored session, Cypress reruns setup; if it fails immediately after setup, the test fails and exposes a login/setup problem.

An authenticated API request is useful when it reliably uses the same browser authentication mechanism as the application:
validate() {
cy.request('/api/me').its('status').should('eq', 200)
}
Alternatively, visit a protected page in validation and assert its authenticated state. Choose an assertion that cannot pass for a logged-out visitor; merely checking that a page loaded is not enough.
Use a session ID that represents the login state
The ID determines which saved session Cypress will reuse. If any changing input affects the session—such as username, role, tenant, or login method—include it. Cypress deterministically stringifies arrays and objects, so IDs can express those dimensions:
cy.session(
{ user: 'qa-editor', role: 'editor', tenant: 'north' },
() => {
// Complete login for this account, role, and tenant.
},
{ validate() { /* assert authenticated access */ } }
)
Do not put passwords, access tokens, or other secrets in the ID. IDs appear in the Cypress reporter. Keep the identifier descriptive enough to prevent collisions without exposing credentials.

Inspect saved and currently applied session data
Use the Sessions Instrument Panel and command log to see whether Cypress created, restored, or recreated a session. That status helps distinguish a cache-selection problem from a login flow or data-application problem.
For deeper inspection, Cypress exposes Cypress.session.getSession(id) for saved session data and Cypress.session.getCurrentSessionData() for cookies and storage currently applied in the browser:
cy.then(async () => {
const saved = await Cypress.session.getSession('user')
const current = await Cypress.session.getCurrentSessionData()
console.log({ saved, current })
})
Compare the expected cookie or storage attributes with both results. Missing attributes can indicate that setup or validation did not wait long enough for the application to apply them before Cypress saved the session. Make the relevant setup or validation step wait for an observable completion condition rather than relying on an arbitrary assumption that login has finished.
Understand cacheAcrossSpecs limits
cacheAcrossSpecs defaults to false. When enabled, it shares a session across specs only within one cypress run on one machine. It does not persist to disk, carry into a new run, or move between parallel CI machines. Each machine needs to establish its own session.

Every spec that reuses a session must make a consistent cy.session() call with the same ID, setup, validation, and cacheAcrossSpecs value. If one spec defines the same ID with a different login flow or validation, treat that inconsistency as a likely cause of surprising reuse behavior.
Check migration and cookie-domain assumptions
Older tests may use Cypress.Cookies.defaults or Cypress.Cookies.preserveOnce. Cypress removed those APIs and recommends cy.session() for preserving cookies and browser storage. Cookie commands use the hostname rather than the superdomain by default; if a test expects cookies to be shared across subdomains, check whether it needs an explicit domain option.
Version history matters when adapting examples: cacheAcrossSpecs was added in Cypress 10.9.0; setup became required in 11.0.0; and in Cypress 12.0.0, experimentalSessionAndOrigin was removed and the command became available by default. Check the Cypress migration guide and the API docs for the version installed in your project.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Classify the symptom: blank page, 401, wrong identity, missing storage, or failed cross-spec reuse.
- Check the command log and Sessions Instrument Panel for created, restored, or recreated status.
- Assert successful login inside setup before it ends.
- Add or repair
validateso it checks authenticated access. - Build the ID from every state-changing input, and leave secrets out.
- When isolation is enabled, visit the route under test after
cy.session(). - If storage is missing, compare saved and current session data and ensure setup/validation wait for state to be applied.
- For cross-spec expectations, verify consistent session definitions and account for run and machine boundaries.
- For legacy cookie preservation, check the Cypress version and cookie domain behavior.
Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions
Does cy.session() cache the page URL?
No. It caches browser cookies and storage, not the application page; visit the route your test needs.
Can cacheAcrossSpecs share a session between parallel CI machines?
No. Its cache is limited to one Cypress run on one machine.
