If the failed task is import/url, CloudConvert may be receiving a Cloudflare challenge, an access-denied response, or an error from the website’s origin instead of the file you meant to convert. If the import succeeded, investigate the conversion or export task instead. A 403, 522, or 524 points to different problems; the status code and response body help narrow them down, but do not by themselves prove who caused the failure.
Find the failing CloudConvert task first
A CloudConvert job is made up of tasks, commonly including an import, a conversion, and an export. A URL import failure is an access or retrieval problem; a conversion-task failure happens after input is available; an export failure concerns delivery of the result. Changing Cloudflare settings will not fix every kind of job failure.
- Open the failed job and inspect its task list. Record each task’s operation, status, error code, and error message. CloudConvert’s API documentation describes jobs and tasks.
- Identify the first failed task. If it is
import/url, follow the URL-access checks below. If import succeeded, use the conversion or export error details to investigate that stage rather than assuming Cloudflare blocked the request. - Keep the input URL and the full error response. The task name and response are important when asking CloudConvert or the site owner for help.
If URL import failed, check what the remote request receives
CloudConvert needs to retrieve the source URL. Test whether that URL returns the intended file to a remote request that does not have your logged-in browser session. A browser that can see a page is not proof that a separate importer can access the same content: your browser may have cookies or an established session, while the importer may receive a login redirect, access-denied page, bot challenge, or a different redirect destination.
- Check the response status, response body, and final destination after redirects. Confirm the response is the intended file or page, not an HTML challenge or an error page.
- Check whether the URL requires authentication. CloudConvert documents sending additional request headers for URL imports that require authorization, as well as other import methods in its Import Files documentation.
- If the source is available only inside a private session or network, use an authorized import route supported by CloudConvert rather than assuming that a public URL import can reuse your browser’s access.
- For files over 10 MB, CloudConvert cautions against base64 imports. Choose a documented alternative import method instead.
Do not treat a URL-import error as proof that CloudConvert can or cannot pass a particular Cloudflare challenge. The result depends on the challenge, access requirements, and request behavior for that URL.

Use the response to distinguish 403, 522, and 524

For a 403, identify which system denied access
When you control the Cloudflare zone, review the relevant security events and applicable WAF, challenge, and access rules for the request. Cloudflare provides separate guidance for troubleshooting challenges and WAF troubleshooting. If the response is unbranded, investigate origin permissions and IP-deny rules: Cloudflare’s documentation says that an unbranded 403 is returned by the origin, not Cloudflare.
Do not disable protections broadly just to make an import work. If you administer the site, use the security-event details to identify the relevant request and rule, then choose an authorized access method or a narrowly scoped rule change consistent with your security requirements. If you do not control the zone, ask its owner to investigate; you cannot resolve their access policy from CloudConvert.

For a 522, investigate origin reachability
A 522 is a connection problem between Cloudflare and the origin, not evidence that the file format itself is invalid. The site administrator should check the origin’s availability and load, the configured origin address, and whether network controls allow Cloudflare to reach it. If you are only the person submitting the CloudConvert job, send the exact URL and timestamp to the site owner rather than changing settings you do not control.
For a 524, investigate origin response time
A 524 means the connection was established but the origin did not return a response within the applicable time. The site administrator should look for slow or overloaded work on the origin and consider an asynchronous workflow with status polling for a long-running process. Retrying the same URL without addressing a slow origin may produce the same result.

Use a different import route when a URL is not publicly retrievable
If the URL import cannot retrieve the intended input, the next step depends on what access you have. CloudConvert’s import documentation covers URL imports with additional request headers and other import methods. Use a supported, authorized route that can provide the actual source file; do not pass credentials to a service unless you are authorized to do so and understand what access they grant.

Escalate with the details that can identify the fault
For a 5xx error, Cloudflare notes that the cause may not appear in origin logs alone. Preserve the evidence and check logs at the origin and any intervening load balancers, caches, proxies, and firewalls. Include:

- The failed CloudConvert task operation, status, error code, and full error message.
- The HTTP status and response body received for the URL, including whether the response is Cloudflare-branded.
- Relevant origin and intermediary logs, if you or the site administrator can access them.
- Whether you administer the Cloudflare zone or origin, so support knows which settings you can inspect.
Cloudflare’s 5xx troubleshooting documentation describes the need to investigate the request path beyond the origin logs. Without the task details, exact response, and control-boundary information, a particular incident cannot be assigned a definitive root cause.
