The message Failed to create shared context for virtualization means Chromium’s GPU process failed to create a GL context while setting up shared context state. It is not, by itself, proof that Docker’s shared memory is too small—or that the browser has stopped working. Check the graphics errors immediately before it, record your exact browser and container environment, then change one graphics setting at a time and test the operation that was failing. The available reports do not establish a universal Docker flag that fixes this error.
What the error means—and what it does not mean
In Chromium’s GPU channel manager, the message is emitted when CreateGLContext fails during shared-context setup. The implementation also notes: “Virtualized contexts don’t work with passthrough command decoder.” That describes a constraint in this graphics path; it is not a general instruction to add or remove a particular Docker flag. Chromium source: gpu_channel_manager.cc.
In headless and container reports, the line has appeared after more specific EGL or ANGLE/Vulkan initialization errors. One report, for example, showed unsupported Vulkan surface extensions and EGL_NOT_INITIALIZED before the shared-context failure. That makes the selected graphics backend and its runtime support sensible places to investigate, but it does not establish one cause for every occurrence. Sparticuz Chromium issue 190.
First determine whether Chromium only logged the message or whether it actually hangs, fails navigation, or cannot render or capture the page. A GPU initialization warning and a failed browser workload are not interchangeable diagnoses.

Start with the errors above the message
- Capture complete Chromium stderr. Do not diagnose from the final line alone. Inspect the preceding output for EGL initialization failures, ANGLE or Vulkan errors, missing graphics libraries, unsupported extensions, and other context creation failures.
- Record the environment. Note the exact Chromium build/version, container base image and distribution, CPU architecture, browser package or build, launch flags, and the failing operation. Version and architecture differed across user reports, so these details are essential when comparing behavior. Chromium discussion.
- Reproduce the actual failure. Test the same navigation, rendering, or screenshot operation that failed. If it succeeds despite the log line, keep that distinction in your incident notes rather than assuming the line itself caused a failure.
Test graphics configuration without assuming a flag is the fix
For workloads that do not require hardware acceleration
As a controlled diagnostic experiment, try a headless configuration that disables GPU acceleration or uses an appropriate software-rendering path. Change only that setting, restart Chromium, and repeat the failing operation. A Lambda report included --disable-gpu, but did not establish that it resolved the error. Another report described trying several GPU flags without success in a Chromium 127 amd64 Lambda case. Treat these as evidence that outcomes vary—not as proof for or against a particular flag in your image. Sparticuz Chromium issue 190 Chromium discussion.
If you selected ANGLE, Vulkan, or another backend
Verify which backend Chromium actually selected, whether the required runtime libraries and extensions are present in the image, and whether that backend supports your CPU architecture and execution environment. An ANGLE/Vulkan initialization error preceding the shared-context line is a more specific lead than the final line. The available incident report supports investigating those compatibility details; it does not identify a universally required package or installation command.

Keep unrelated flags out of the first test
Do not stack --single-process, software-rasterizer changes, sandbox changes, and shared-memory changes into one attempted fix. User reports include such configurations or attempts, but do not verify them as solutions. Likewise, --disable-dev-shm-usage appears in a reported command line, but the cited evidence does not establish /dev/shm capacity as the cause of this GL-context error. Investigate shared-memory issues separately when their symptoms support it.
Use a repeatable test matrix
When the failure persists, compare configurations while holding the rest of the environment constant. Change one variable per run so that a successful or failed result has diagnostic value.

A report noted different behavior between Chromium versions and amd64 versus arm64, but it is anecdotal and does not establish a Chromium regression or its cause. If the error began after an upgrade, first compare the two versions on the same image and architecture; compare architectures separately only if your deployment supports both. Chromium discussion.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- The message appears, but the task succeeds: Record it as a GPU-context log and monitor the actual browser outcome. Do not make unrelated launch changes solely to silence a line.
- The log is preceded by EGL or ANGLE/Vulkan errors: Investigate the selected backend, required runtime libraries or extensions, and architecture support in the container image.
- The browser hangs or rendering fails: Reproduce the failure with complete stderr, then test one graphics-path change at a time and verify the same workload after each change.
- The failure appeared after a Chromium upgrade: Compare the previous and current builds on the same image and architecture before changing multiple flags or packages.
- You suspect Docker shared memory: Treat that as a separate hypothesis. The cited reports do not establish
--disable-dev-shm-usageor shared-memory capacity as a fix or cause for this message.
