If your Chromebook says “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” or fails while reading recovery media, first protect any files you can still access. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local storage, including downloaded files. Try a restart—and, if you can sign in, a Powerwash—before recovery. Then use the recovery method available for your model and work through the error-specific fixes below.

Before you start: protect data and choose the right fix

Google warns that “Recovery permanently erases everything on your Chromebook’s hard drive, even your downloaded files.” Back up files you need if the Chromebook still lets you access them. Recovery may still erase local data, so do not proceed assuming those files will be preserved. Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions explain the process and its consequences.

Recovery and Powerwash are different operations. If the Chromebook starts and you can sign in, Google recommends restarting first; if the error persists, try a factory reset (Powerwash) before recovery. Powerwash resets the device and erases local user data, while recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS for more serious operating-system problems. See Google’s reset instructions for Powerwash steps.

  • Disconnect accessories from the Chromebook displaying the error before entering recovery mode.
  • If the Chromebook belongs to a school or workplace, contact its administrator before wiping or recovering it; managed-device policies may affect what you can do.
  • If the Chromebook cannot start and the recovery screen is already displayed, continue to the recovery-method choice.

Choose internet or USB recovery

Google’s current guidance offers two main recovery methods. Use internet recovery if the option appears on the recovery screen and the Chromebook can connect to a network. If it is absent, or the device has no internet access, USB recovery may be the alternative if the model supports it. Some older Chromebooks may not support internet recovery, and Google notes that updates or recovery may not be possible for some older devices.

Method What you need When to choose it
Internet recovery A supported Chromebook with network access; no recovery USB needs to be made. The recovery screen offers “Recover using internet connection.”
USB recovery A second working computer with Chrome and an erasable USB flash drive with at least 8 GB capacity. Internet recovery is not offered or cannot be used, and the model supports external recovery media.

Both methods reinstall ChromeOS and carry the local-data erasure risk described above. The 8 GB minimum is Google’s stated requirement for USB recovery media, not a guarantee that every drive will work.

Enter recovery mode

For most Chromebook laptops, use the keyboard sequence below. Remove connected devices from the affected Chromebook first.

  2. Hold Esc and Refresh, then press Power.
  3. Release Power. When the recovery message appears, release the other keys.

Some models use Esc + Maximize instead of Esc + Refresh. For a Chromebook tablet, hold Volume Up, Volume Down, and Power together for at least 10 seconds. Chromeboxes and Chromebits may use a physical recovery button; consult the manufacturer’s instructions if you do not know its location. Google’s recovery guidance covers the model-dependent entry process.

Recover ChromeOS using the method available

Use internet recovery

  1. On the recovery screen, select Recover using internet connection if it is offered.
  2. Connect to a network if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions until recovery completes.

If the option is missing, that alone does not prove the Chromebook is faulty; the method may not be supported on that device. Use USB recovery if available for the model.

Create and use a USB recovery drive

USB recovery requires a second working Chromebook, Windows computer, or Mac with Chrome. The USB drive you select will be erased when recovery media is created.

  1. On the working computer, open Chrome and install or open the Chromebook Recovery Utility.
  2. In the utility, select or enter the affected Chromebook’s model, then follow the prompts to create recovery media on a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB capacity.
  3. When the utility finishes, eject the drive safely and insert it into the affected Chromebook.
  4. At the recovery screen, choose Recover using external disk and follow the prompts.

Google also documents a Linux recovery-tool route in its recovery instructions. It involves downloading a tool, allowing its script to run, and executing it with root privileges; follow Google’s current directions rather than improvising commands.

Fix common Chromebook recovery messages

“An unexpected error has occurred”

Google recommends erasing the recovery storage device and trying again. If the error returns, create the recovery media on another flash drive; some drives do not work reliably for this task. If recovery still fails, contact the Chromebook manufacturer. See Google’s recovery troubleshooting steps.

“Please remove all connected devices and start recovery”

Remove accessories connected to the Chromebook, such as a mouse or external hard drive, then repeat the recovery-mode steps. Google’s instructions specifically call for removing connected devices. Google Chromebook Help lists this message and its remedy.

“The device you inserted doesn’t contain ChromeOS”

Check that the inserted USB drive is the one used to create the recovery media. If it is, erase the media and create it again; if the message persists, try another drive. Contact the manufacturer if another attempt still fails. These are Google’s recommended checks for this message. Google’s recovery troubleshooting page has the corresponding guidance.

“The security module on this device isn’t working”

Google advises seeking help in the Chromebook Help forum. If the device is managed by a school or workplace, contact its administrator; persistent problems may require manufacturer repair. Google’s recovery help describes these escalation options.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • For a managed Chromebook, ask the school or workplace administrator for help before attempting further wipes or recovery.
  • If internet recovery is unavailable and USB recovery is unsupported or repeatedly fails, check the manufacturer’s support guidance. Some older models may no longer be able to recover.
  • If the listed media checks do not resolve a recovery error, contact the manufacturer. For continuing security-module failures, Google also points users to the Chromebook Help forum.
