Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix a Node.js screenshot by locating the stage that fails: Chrome launch, page navigation and rendering, the screenshot protocol call, or writing the output file. Each stage has different symptoms and remedies. Start with a minimal, instrumented Puppeteer script, then apply only the environment fix that matches the error.
Start with a minimal, observable capture
Install Puppeteer in a clean project and make every important setting explicit. The script below records browser output, navigation failures, page errors, the final URL, and the output path.
npm install puppeteer
const fs = require('node:fs');
const path = require('node:path');
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const output = path.resolve(process.cwd(), 'shot.png');
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
dumpio: true,
// executablePath: '/absolute/path/to/chrome' // use only when needed
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
page.on('console', msg => console.log(`[page:${msg.type()}] ${msg.text()}`));
page.on('pageerror', error => console.error('[pageerror]', error));
page.on('requestfailed', request => console.error('[requestfailed]', request.url(), request.failure()));
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 768, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60000
});
console.log('HTTP status:', response && response.status());
console.log('URL:', page.url());
await page.waitForSelector('body', { timeout: 10000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: output, type: 'png', fullPage: true });
console.log('Wrote:', output, 'bytes:', fs.statSync(output).size);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
dumpio: true forwards Chrome’s process logs to Node’s standard output. Keep the complete exception, including its first error line and any protocol method named in it; “Could not find Chrome,” “Page.captureScreenshot timed out,” and a missing file indicate different investigations.
1. If puppeteer.launch() fails
“Could not find Chrome” or an executable error
Confirm that the package’s browser was installed and that the process can execute it. In CI, containers, and serverless builds, dependencies may be omitted even though the Node package is present. Print the resolved executable path and test it outside your application. If you intentionally use system Chrome, set an absolute executablePath and verify that the account running Node can read and execute the binary.

“No usable sandbox!” on Linux
Chrome expects a usable Linux sandbox. Correct the host’s sandbox permissions or use a supported container configuration. Passing --no-sandbox removes a security boundary and should not be a routine production fix; Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance limits it to cases where the content and execution environment are absolutely trusted. If you must isolate a diagnostic run, document the risk and restore sandboxing before deployment.
Collect launch evidence
- Run with
dumpio: trueand save stdout and stderr from the same process. - Record Node.js, Puppeteer, Chrome, operating-system, container, and architecture versions.
- Check writable temporary directories, shared-memory limits, executable permissions, and user identity.
- Try a visible browser with
headless: falsewhen a display is available. A headful success points toward headless or host configuration rather than your page code.
2. If Chrome launches but the page is wrong or blank
Verify navigation before capture
Log response.status() and page.url(). A redirect, authentication page, consent screen, bot check, or HTTP error can be a validly captured page that is not the page you expected. Attach listeners for page console messages, uncaught page errors, and failed requests as shown above.
Wait for the content your screenshot needs
networkidle2 is a useful starting point, not proof that an application has finished rendering. For a known component, wait for its selector; for a chart or image, wait for a page-specific readiness condition. Use a bounded timeout so a permanently open connection cannot hang the job indefinitely.

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="report"]', { visible: true, timeout: 30000 });
await page.waitForFunction(() => document.fonts.status === 'loaded', { timeout: 10000 });
Make viewport and screenshot scope explicit
Set width, height, and device scale factor before navigation when responsive layout matters. Use fullPage: true only when the entire document is required; otherwise capture the viewport or a specific element. Element capture fails if the selector does not exist or has no visible box, so check it first.
const card = await page.$('.invoice-card');
if (!card) throw new Error('invoice card was not rendered');
await card.screenshot({ path: 'invoice-card.webp', type: 'webp', quality: 90 });
Lazy-loaded content may not exist until it enters the viewport. Scroll deliberately, wait for images, or use the application’s own ready signal instead of adding an arbitrary long delay.
3. If the screenshot call times out
Understand the protocol layer
Puppeteer ultimately asks Chrome’s DevTools Protocol to run Page.captureScreenshot. The protocol documentation notes that capture can fail during renderer initialization. A timeout therefore does not automatically mean the file system, URL, or PNG encoder is broken.

Protocol diagnostics and a reported reproduction
Puppeteer’s debugging material describes logging DevTools Protocol traffic and inspecting pending protocol errors. Use that output to determine whether the request is waiting on renderer initialization or another command. Issue #12712 reports a particular multi-page timeout reproduction and different results when protocol or headless-mode settings changed. Treat that report as a reproduction lead, not as a universal fix: versions, page content, operating system, and concurrency must match before its workaround is relevant.
Reduce concurrency before increasing timeouts
Launching many pages simultaneously can expose renderer or memory pressure. Start with a single page, then add a small queue and measure. Increasing a protocol timeout can make a slow failure take longer; it cannot repair a renderer that never initializes.

require('node:fs').mkdirSync(require('node:path').dirname(output), { recursive: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: output });
console.log(require('node:fs').statSync(output));
Verify directory permissions, volume mounts, cleanup jobs, and whether a container writes to an ephemeral filesystem. If you omit path, Puppeteer returns image bytes; your code must persist them:
const buffer = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png' });
require('node:fs').writeFileSync('/tmp/shot.png', buffer);
Chrome command-line capture as a control test
Chrome’s headless command-line mode can separate a Node/Puppeteer problem from a browser or page problem. Its documented example writes screenshot.png in the current working directory and accepts a window-size option.
google-chrome --headless --screenshot=screenshot.png --window-size=1365,768 https://example.com
Use the executable name installed on your operating system. If this command fails, inspect Chrome’s stderr, sandbox, permissions, and renderer environment before changing Node code. If it works while Puppeteer fails, compare the executable, flags, viewport, and navigation timing.

Headless, headful, and chrome-headless-shell
Headful mode is a diagnostic, not a production requirement: it lets you watch redirects, dialogs, blank states, and late rendering. Headless mode is normally preferable for automation, but it can reveal environment-specific renderer behavior. The GPU note in Puppeteer’s troubleshooting documentation applies specifically to chrome-headless-shell: GPU acceleration there requires --enable-gpu. Do not add that flag to every screenshot job or assume it fixes unrelated blank pages.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely stage | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Could not find Chrome | Launch | Install or locate the browser; test the absolute executable path and permissions. |
| No usable sandbox! | Launch/environment | Configure the Linux sandbox; use --no-sandbox only for trusted, isolated diagnostics. |
| Screenshot is a login, consent, or bot page | Navigation/rendering | Inspect redirects, cookies, headers, authentication, and page console output. |
| Blank or incomplete page | Rendering | Set viewport explicitly, wait for the target selector/readiness signal, and test headful mode. |
| Page.captureScreenshot timeout | Protocol/renderer | Minimize to one page, collect protocol logs, compare modes, and check renderer initialization. |
| No output file | Saving | Log the absolute path and working directory; verify directory permissions and mounts. |

ScreenshotNeo provides a single-call screenshot API when maintaining Chrome is not the useful part of your application. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use a longer screenshot timeout?
Only after a minimal reproduction shows a slow but progressing renderer. A longer timeout does not fix launch errors, missing selectors, sandbox failures, or a renderer that never initializes.
Why does a screenshot work headful but fail headless?
That difference points to headless, renderer, GPU, display, or host configuration. Compare logs and browser versions, then test the smallest headless capture before restoring application options.
Why is the captured page different from the URL I requested?
The page may redirect, require authentication, display consent or bot protection, or fail to load application data. Log the final URL, status, console messages, and failed requests.
