If a Chrome command-line screenshot is missing, blank, or the wrong size, first verify which Chrome executable ran, the exact arguments it received, and the process’s current working directory. Chrome’s documented Headless command saves screenshot.png in that directory by default; it does not necessarily save beside the page or in the folder where you expected to find it. Then check the viewport and capture timeout, and compare your command with guidance for your installed Chrome version.
Start with the command, output location, and Chrome version
Before changing flags, write down the exact command used to launch Chrome, the operating system, the Chrome or Chromium version, and what happened: no file, an image in an unexpected location, a blank image, or an image with the wrong dimensions. These symptoms can have different causes. Without the command and runtime details, there is no reliable way to identify one universal fix.
Chrome’s official Headless command-line reference documents --screenshot as capturing the target page and saving the result as screenshot.png in the current working directory. The working directory belongs to the process that launched Chrome. When a script, IDE, scheduled task, service, or container starts it, that directory may differ from the folder you are viewing in a terminal or file manager.
- Confirm the executable. Check that the command points to the Chrome or Chromium installation you intended to use.
- Confirm the effective arguments. Check the command syntax and quoting for your operating system, and verify that the process received the switches you meant to pass.
- Check the launcher’s working directory. Look for
screenshot.pngthere, and confirm the process can write to that location. - Record the browser version. Compare any flags in older instructions with the current Headless documentation.
The Chromium Projects’ guide to running Chromium with command-line switches has platform-specific examples and recommends checking chrome://version to inspect the command line used by the current instance. Switches can be developmental and may change or be removed, so an old example is not proof that a flag remains appropriate. If you are diagnosing a command-line launch, inspect the process you actually started rather than assuming a shortcut, launcher, or already-running instance used the same arguments.

If Chrome says it captured a screenshot but you cannot find it
For the documented default workflow, search for screenshot.png in the process’s current working directory. The word “current” is important: a shell command, IDE run configuration, service, scheduled task, and container can each start a process with a different working directory. Finding no file in the directory where you expected it does not establish that Chrome failed to capture.
- For a terminal launch, check the directory from which the command was run.
- For a script or IDE, inspect its configured working directory rather than relying on the project folder shown in the editor.
- For a scheduled task or service, check the runtime account and its working directory and permissions.
- For a container, check the directory visible to the process and whether its user can write there.
The official reference establishes the default filename and location, but not one universal custom output-path syntax that applies to every Chrome build and invocation. Do not assume that a path option from another tool or an old example works for your installed browser. First establish where the process runs and whether it can create a file there.
If the screenshot is blank, incomplete, or the wrong size
Set the capture dimensions explicitly
Use the documented --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT switch when the captured viewport is too small or differs from what you intended. For example, a requested viewport of 1440 by 900 pixels is expressed as --window-size=1440,900. The option sets capture dimensions; it does not by itself ensure that the page’s content has finished rendering.

Allow a bounded wait for the page
The documented --timeout=MILLISECONDS option sets the maximum time Chrome waits before capture. It can help when the first render takes longer than expected, but it is a limit, not a promise that all network activity or asynchronous page behavior has completed. Chrome can capture when that maximum is reached even if the page is still loading.
For a site that builds content after initial page load, increasing the timeout may help only if the needed content appears within that window. A timeout cannot guarantee completion for every application, animation, delayed API response, or page-specific rendering sequence. The official command-line reference does not establish one universal remedy for blank screenshots or pages that render after the timeout. To narrow those cases down, retain the URL type, exact command, Chrome version, and observed image or console output rather than adding unrelated switches at random.
Separate a viewport problem from a timing problem
A screenshot with unexpected dimensions points first to the requested window size and the effective command line. A screenshot with the expected dimensions but missing page content points toward capture timing or page rendering. These are diagnostic directions, not guaranteed causes: the command and output are needed to distinguish them. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell whether the result changed.

Check whether your Headless instructions match your Chrome version
Headless behavior and instructions have changed over time. Chrome’s current Headless mode documentation notes that the implementation was updated in Chrome 112. In the updated mode, Chrome runs without a visible UI while creating platform windows without displaying them, with other Chrome functions available. Older instructions may describe the earlier Headless implementation or a separate Headless Shell workflow, so do not assume that their flags and behavior apply unchanged to a current browser.
Record the installed version and start with the current Headless command-line reference. If a command copied from an older guide behaves differently, compare its flags with the documentation for the browser version you are actually launching. The Chromium switch guide also cautions that switches can change or be removed; a flag that appears in a tutorial is not necessarily a supported or useful fix today.
Do not use --no-sandbox as a blanket fix
A failed screenshot does not, by itself, show that Chrome’s sandbox is the problem. The official Headless Chrome Shell guidance says --no-sandbox is unnecessary when a container is properly configured with a user. For container runs, check the runtime and user setup rather than reflexively disabling a security boundary. The documentation does not support treating --no-sandbox as a universal or safe remedy for screenshot failures.

- How Chrome is launched: terminal, script, IDE, task, service, or container.
- The process’s current working directory and whether it can write there.
- The target URL type and whether the page needs time to render content.
- Whether no file appeared, a file appeared elsewhere, or the image was blank, incomplete, or the wrong size.
- Any command output or error message.
Those details make it possible to choose the relevant diagnostic path without assuming that all “Chrome command line screenshot not working” reports have the same cause.
