If a CAPTCHA is missing, stuck loading, repeatedly asks you to verify, or rejects a completed challenge, start by updating your browser, enabling JavaScript, and temporarily disabling extensions that might interfere. Then retry in another supported browser. If the same problem persists across browsers or affects only one website, the site may need to fix its CAPTCHA integration; contact its support team.

First, identify what is failing

The right fix depends on whether the CAPTCHA never appears, will not load, expires, or keeps returning after you complete it. Note the exact message and whether the issue happens on one site or several. That helps distinguish a browser or connection problem from a site-specific failure.

  • No checkbox or CAPTCHA is showing: Check browser support, JavaScript, and extensions.
  • The widget spins or the challenge will not load: Check extensions and connection-related factors, then try another supported browser.
  • The challenge expired: Start it again and finish the site task promptly.
  • “Computer or network may be sending automated queries” or repeated challenges: Your network’s reputation or activity affecting the site may be involved; it does not prove you personally used automation.
  • Verification fails only on one website or in every browser: The site may have a configuration or integration problem.

Fix a CAPTCHA that is not showing

  1. Update your browser. Google lists the two latest major versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Chromium Edge for desktop reCAPTCHA use. Its mobile list includes Chrome, Safari, and the Android native browser. The supported window moves as browsers update, so use the latest available version. See Google’s reCAPTCHA help.
  2. Make sure JavaScript is enabled. CAPTCHA widgets rely on browser-side scripts. If JavaScript is blocked, the widget may not appear or work correctly.
  3. Temporarily disable extensions or plugins that may interfere. Privacy, script-blocking, and content-filtering tools are reasonable suspects, but do not assume any one extension is the cause. Reload the page after disabling extensions for a brief test. If that fixes it, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict, then restore the others.
  4. Reload the page and try again. A temporary load failure may clear on a fresh attempt. Avoid repeatedly submitting a form before you know whether the site accepted it.

Google also recommends trying another supported browser for visual CAPTCHA issues. If the widget is still missing in current browsers with JavaScript enabled and interfering extensions disabled, the website may have integrated reCAPTCHA incorrectly; its support team will need to investigate.

Fix a CAPTCHA that is stuck loading

A widget that spins or never presents a challenge can be caused by a browser connection problem, an extension, an unstable connection, a VPN, or security software. These are possible page-loading causes, not proof that a particular setting is responsible for every CAPTCHA failure. Chrome’s connection and loading guidance covers these general checks.

  1. Reload once and give the page time to finish loading.
  2. Test extensions temporarily. Disable them for a short test. If the CAPTCHA loads, re-enable extensions one by one to find the blocker; turn back on any that were not implicated.
  3. Check the connection. If your connection is unstable, try again when it is working reliably. If you use a VPN or security software that filters web traffic, test whether the problem changes when that factor is briefly turned off, if it is safe and permitted to do so. Restore the setting after the test.
  4. Try another supported browser. If the challenge loads there, the problem may be specific to the original browser setup. If it fails there too, that comparison still does not prove the cause, but makes a site or network issue more plausible.

Change one factor at a time so the result is useful. Do not permanently weaken browser protections just to get through one challenge.

What to do when a challenge expires or verification fails

Google reCAPTCHA Help displays this expiration message: “Verification challenge expired, check the checkbox again for a new challenge.” A challenge can expire after a timeout or inactivity.

  3. If the challenge expires repeatedly, reload the page and try again near the end of the task. If it still fails, try another supported browser and contact the website if the problem continues.

Do not assume “verification failed” means you answered incorrectly: a page-load, connection, expiration, or site integration problem can also prevent successful verification.

Why reCAPTCHA keeps asking you to verify

Google says legitimate users can see unusual-traffic messages or repeated challenges. Possible reasons include abuse coming from a shared network, a suspicious recently assigned IP address, or an attack against the website. The message does not by itself establish that your device is sending automated requests. Google’s unusual-traffic help explains the warning.

  • Wait and try again later if the challenge keeps recurring.
  • Try another supported browser to see whether the symptom changes.
  • If practical, compare with another device or network. These comparisons can help narrow down where the problem follows, but they are not conclusive tests.
  • If the warning is limited to one website or persists, contact that site’s support team.

Tell whether it is your browser, network, or the website

Use comparisons to narrow the problem, not to claim certainty. Google documents both end-user visual challenge problems and failures that require changes to a site’s reCAPTCHA integration. A different browser is a recommended user-side check; comparing devices or sites is a practical diagnostic inference, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

The same website works in another supported browser on the same device The original browser’s settings, extensions, or loading environment may be involved. Test extensions one at a time and confirm JavaScript is enabled.
The same failure appears across supported browsers, but only on one website A site-specific configuration, integration, or service problem becomes more plausible. Contact the website’s support team and include the exact error and browsers tested.
Several sites fail on one device or network A shared browser or connection factor may be involved, though the comparison is not conclusive. Check extensions and connection stability; if available, compare another device or network.
Challenges recur with an unusual-traffic warning Google lists shared-network abuse, a suspicious assigned IP, or an attack on the destination site as possibilities. Retry later and consult Google’s unusual-traffic guidance.

When the website has to fix it

Google Cloud’s reCAPTCHA integration troubleshooting guide identifies site-side issues such as invalid keys, unsupported domain configuration, and client-side network failures or timeouts. Visitors generally cannot correct those settings themselves. If browser checks do not help—especially when the problem is isolated to one site or persists across browsers—contact the site’s support team.

Share the page address, the exact error or behavior, when it occurs, your browser and version, and whether you tried another supported browser. Do not send passwords, payment information, or private form contents. This gives support useful diagnostic context without exposing sensitive data.

Site owners may also need to check their integration. Google documents a necessary _GRECAPTCHA cookie for risk analysis and says implementations can use www.recaptcha.net where www.google.com is not accessible. Those are implementation details for the website owner; ordinary visitors should not alter the site’s CAPTCHA code.

If your task is to capture a page rather than complete its CAPTCHA yourself, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup options accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It is not a way to bypass a CAPTCHA to access a protected account or complete a verification challenge.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP. Replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to capture and supply your API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. Python and Node.js examples are also available there. An MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000, and every feature is available on every plan.
