If Unicode text is wrong in a wkhtmltopdf PDF, first determine whether the input is being decoded with the wrong character encoding or whether the renderer cannot find a font containing the affected glyphs. UTF-8 fixes an encoding mismatch; it does not supply missing fonts. Check the actual input bytes and charset for mojibake, and check font coverage and the wkhtmltopdf runtime for blank spaces or square boxes affecting only certain characters.
The steps below target wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6, the stable series identified by the project’s downloads information as released June 11, 2020. The project repository is archived, so this guide does not assume a newer official release or ongoing upstream maintenance.
First identify what “broken” means
Look closely at the generated PDF and classify the failure before changing settings. Different symptoms point to different causes:

These are diagnostic clues, not guarantees. A CentOS 7 report involving wkhtmltopdf 0.12.3 described missing Unicode characters, while a Windows 10 report involving 0.12.5 described characters visible in a browser but missing from the PDF. Those individual reports illustrate different failure patterns; they do not establish a universal fix for a distribution or operating system.

Check the encoding of the source
A charset declaration describes how bytes should be interpreted. It cannot convert incorrectly encoded bytes into the intended text by itself. Make sure the file’s actual encoding matches its HTML declaration. If the source is fetched from a URL, inspect both the response charset and the HTML declaration. With local-file input, inspect the file’s actual bytes and metadata rather than assuming the editor’s display proves the encoding.
Declare UTF-8 in an HTML file
For an HTML file that is actually saved as UTF-8, put a charset declaration near the beginning of the document’s head:

</html>Replace the sample characters with the exact text that fails in your document. Saving the file in UTF-8 is part of this check: adding the meta tag to a file whose bytes use a different encoding does not make those bytes UTF-8.
Set wkhtmltopdf’s default encoding when needed
The project’s settings documentation names the default as web.defaultEncoding and gives utf-8 as an example. In command-line use, the corresponding option is --encoding. Use it when the content does not correctly specify its encoding and UTF-8 really is the encoding of the input:

wkhtmltopdf --encoding utf-8 input.html output.pdfFor URL input, substitute the URL for input.html. The option sets a default for content lacking a proper declaration; it should not be treated as a universal repair or as a way to change the actual bytes. An archived Ubuntu issue report described Chinese text remaining wrong despite UTF-8 command-line and HTML declarations. That report was labeled invalid, but it is a useful reminder to check the source and other causes rather than repeating the same setting.
Check whether the renderer has the required glyphs
If the text is otherwise correct and only particular characters, symbols, or scripts disappear or become boxes, investigate font coverage. UTF-8 can represent a character without ensuring that the selected font contains its glyph. Set an explicit font that covers the affected characters when needed, and make that font available to the process running wkhtmltopdf.
A browser on a developer’s workstation may display characters by selecting fallback fonts that wkhtmltopdf does not find or select in the same way. A Windows 10 / wkhtmltopdf 0.12.5 issue report described a browser using Yu Gothic UI, Nirmala UI, and SimSun alongside the requested font. This is a reported setup, not a statement about all Windows installations.
Identify the script before choosing a font
Make a small sample with the exact affected characters and surrounding Latin text. Identify which script or Unicode range is missing, then choose a font with coverage for those characters. There is no single font package established as the fix for every language, symbol, operating system, or Linux distribution. A CentOS 7 issue discussion, for example, reported that additional fonts were needed; it does not establish which package will suit another system.

Verify fonts in the actual deployment environment
Test fonts where the PDF is produced, not only where the HTML is authored or previewed. The wkhtmltopdf project describes runtime behavior as depending on installed fonts and the fontconfig and freetype2 libraries. In a container or serverless deployment, include the required font files and font configuration in the runtime image or bundle, and verify that the wkhtmltopdf process can see them.
The project’s Lambda example sets FONTCONFIG_PATH=/opt/fonts. Treat that as an example path for that setup, not a universal location: paths and package names vary by distribution and deployment. Configure the font discovery environment for your runtime, provide a font covering the needed characters, and test the resulting PDF from the same image and execution path used in production.
Reproduce the issue with a minimal PDF
Once you have identified the symptom, reduce the problem so you can change one likely cause at a time. The reviewed documentation and issue reports do not establish a controlled, universal troubleshooting checklist; this sequence is a practical way to isolate the two main causes.
- Create a small HTML file containing the exact failing characters, a short known-good Latin string, and a UTF-8 declaration if the file is saved as UTF-8.
- Generate a PDF using the same operating system, wkhtmltopdf binary, options, input path (URL or local file), and runtime image as production.
- Inspect the PDF itself. Do not rely only on how the HTML appears in a browser.
- If characters are garbled, verify the file bytes or URL response charset and the HTML declaration; then test the correct default encoding if the content lacks a valid declaration.
- If characters are blank or boxed, check that a font covering those characters is installed and discoverable by the process. Test an explicit font family if appropriate.
- Change one variable at a time and regenerate the PDF. Record which input, encoding, font, or runtime change alters the result.
Common problems and how to recover
“I added --encoding utf-8, but nothing changed”
That setting cannot supply a missing glyph and cannot correct bytes that were encoded differently. Recheck the actual source encoding and declarations. If only a subset of characters is missing, move to the font-coverage branch instead of adding more encoding declarations.

“The HTML looks right in my browser, but the PDF has boxes”
The browser and wkhtmltopdf may not use the same fonts or fallback behavior. Check what fonts the wkhtmltopdf runtime can discover, including inside the production container or serverless bundle. Test the output PDF after adding or configuring an appropriate font.
“It works locally but fails on the server”
Compare the actual runtime environments: wkhtmltopdf binary and options, source-loading path, installed fonts, and font configuration. Reproduce the PDF in the server’s image or deployment environment. A font installed only on a developer’s machine is not available to a separate server process.
“A meta tag says UTF-8, but the text is still wrong”
Confirm that the file’s bytes are actually UTF-8. For a URL, inspect the response charset too. A declaration and the bytes must agree; the declaration alone does not transcode the content.

The project documentation is the basis for the default encoding setting, runtime font dependencies, and Lambda font-path example. Individual issue reports are useful accounts of particular environments, not controlled tests or proof that one option or font package fixes all systems.

Does wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 guarantee that every Unicode character will render?
No. UTF-8 encoding and glyph coverage are separate: the renderer still needs access to a font containing the character.
