Blurry XWayland apps are usually being enlarged by the compositor, not harmed by your monitor or cable. The safest fix depends on your desktop, its version, and whether the app can run with a native Wayland backend. Check those first; there is no single XWayland switch that works across every Linux desktop.

Why XWayland apps can look blurry

XWayland lets X11 applications run inside a Wayland session. With fractional scaling, an X11 app may render at a lower resolution than the display needs. The compositor then enlarges the app’s output so its window appears at the right size, which can soften text and graphics. GNOME contributor Jonas Ådahl described the effect this way: “To make them adequately sized on the screen, compositors will scale them up, and this is why they are blurry.” (GNOME Discourse, February 28, 2023.)

The details vary by compositor, desktop release, application, and toolkit. A setting that applies to GNOME or an X11 toolkit may not affect a native Wayland app or another desktop environment.

Identify your desktop and the affected app’s display backend

Before changing settings, note your desktop or compositor and version, your display’s scaling value, and whether the affected app is running through XWayland or as a native Wayland client. Do not infer the backend from the blur alone. Check the application’s own documentation or settings and your distribution’s guidance for identifying its session type.

Option When it may help Trade-off or caveat
Desktop-provided XWayland scaling Your desktop and release provide a setting intended for XWayland apps. Availability and support depend on the release and distribution packaging; GNOME 47 described its feature as experimental.
Native Wayland app backend The application and its packaged runtime offer a suitable Wayland backend. Support and maturity vary by app and package.
Toolkit or app scaling The app’s text or controls need a size adjustment, and the relevant toolkit honors the setting. Toolkit-specific; changing sizing does not guarantee that all visual content becomes sharp.
Different display scale or session No suitable per-app option exists and you are willing to change broader desktop behavior. Can affect mixed-DPI behavior, app compatibility, and the overall desktop experience.

GNOME 47: experimental Mutter feature

GNOME 47’s release notes document an experimental feature intended to improve scaling for legacy X11 apps. The documented command sets both scale-monitor-framebuffer and xwayland-native-scaling in Mutter’s experimental-features list:

gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features '["scale-monitor-framebuffer", "xwayland-native-scaling"]'

GNOME said the feature was “still considered experimental and should only be used for testing” in its GNOME 47 release notes. Check your installed GNOME/Mutter version and your distribution’s instructions before using it. Do not assume the command is supported, available, or enabled by default on other releases or distributions. Record your existing experimental-features value before changing it so you can restore it if needed.

GNOME 50’s release notes discuss fractional-scaling improvements, but that broad description does not establish that this particular XWayland option is present or enabled in every GNOME 50 distribution build (GNOME 50 release notes). KDE has also described improved fractional-scaling support among its XWayland compatibility work, but its project post does not provide a universal procedure for every Plasma release (KDE Plasma Team, November 26, 2025).

Use the app’s native Wayland backend if it is available

A native Wayland backend changes the rendering path: the application draws for Wayland rather than presenting an X11 surface for the compositor to scale. Whether this is an option depends on the specific application and the runtime or package supplied by your distribution. Check that app’s documentation or package guidance; there is no universal launch flag established here. If the app does not provide a suitable backend, use another option in this guide rather than applying a flag intended for a different toolkit.

Acer 21.5in FHD 1920x1080 100Hz Office Monitor KB220Q H2bi
  • Vibrant Images: Crisp, true-to-life colors come alive in Full HD 1080p resolution. Movies and games appear more real and dramatic, and small details and text are clear with 1920x1080 resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio.
  • Adaptive-Sync Support: Get fast refresh rates thanks to the Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible) product that matches the refresh rate of your monitor with your graphics card. The result is a smooth, tear-free experience in gaming and video playback applications.
  • Up 100Hz Refresh Rate: The 100Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 100Hz, Acer Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
  • Responsive!!: Fast response time of 1ms enhances the experience. Fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a KB220Q monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.

Use toolkit scaling only for the toolkit it affects

Scaling variables and toolkit settings are not universal compositor fixes. GNOME guidance says GDK_SCALE applies to X11 and is ignored on Wayland; Wayland scaling is handled through protocols and compositor settings (GNOME Discourse, September 2023). GNOME community guidance also discusses GTK text scaling and Xresources Xft.dpi for particular Qt, KDE, Motif, or other X11 contexts (GNOME Discourse, 2023). Use such settings only when they match the app and session in question; they may improve legibility without making every icon, image, or other element sharper. For DPI-specific settings, use the value and restart guidance appropriate to your desktop and toolkit.

Consider changing the display scale or session

If neither a desktop option nor a suitable native app backend is available, compare a different fractional scale, integer scaling, or an X11 session. These are broader changes rather than per-app remedies: they alter the desktop experience and can affect mixed-DPI displays and application compatibility. The exact steps and behavior depend on your desktop and distribution, so follow their documentation rather than applying a GNOME-specific command elsewhere.
