If your Android phone says Bluetooth headphones are connected but music or video is silent, first check the phone and headphone volumes, the headphones’ Media audio setting, and the phone’s selected playback output. A Bluetooth connection does not necessarily mean media sound is enabled or routed to the headphones.
Check volume and the headphones’ media setting
- Raise both volumes. Turn up media volume on the Android phone and volume on the headphones. Make sure playback is active and not paused or muted.
- Check for another paired device playing audio. If your headphones support Multipoint or another multi-device switching feature, pause audio on a laptop, tablet, or other paired phone, then start playback on Android. Google notes that switching sources on Multipoint headphones may require stopping playback on the first device: Set up Multipoint headphones on your devices.
- Turn on Media audio for the headphones. Open the Bluetooth settings for the specific headphones and make sure Media audio is enabled. Google’s general route is Settings → Connected devices → Bluetooth (or Saved devices) → the gear beside the headphones → Media audio. The labels and location can vary by Android version and phone maker. Google includes volume, competing paired devices, and the Media audio setting in its Android steps for music with no sound: Fix Bluetooth problems on Android.
If the problem is with phone calls rather than music or video, check the separate Phone audio setting for the accessory. Media audio and phone-call audio are distinct settings; enabling one does not establish that the other is enabled.
Make sure Android is sending playback to the headphones
Open the phone’s active media output selector while audio is playing and choose the headphones. On Pixel, Google documents selecting a connected accessory through the volume panel or media controls: Change volume, sound and vibrate settings on your Pixel phone or Pixel Tablet. On other Android phones, look for a media output, audio output, or connected-device control; its name and placement vary. A connected accessory can still be silent if another available output is selected. Refresh the Bluetooth connection
If volume, Media audio, and the selected output are correct, refresh the connection before removing the saved pairing:

- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in Android’s Bluetooth settings.
- Confirm that the headphones show as paired and connected, then try playing audio again.
- Restart the phone and headphones, reconnect them, and test playback.
- If there is still no sound, open the saved Bluetooth-device controls, disconnect or forget the headphones, then pair them again. You will need to complete pairing again after forgetting them. Use Pixel diagnostics or isolate the failing device
Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold
Google provides Bluetooth diagnostics on Pixel 6 and later, including Fold. The diagnostics can check media audio, hands-free calling, and hearing-aid profiles. If your Pixel offers the diagnostics, use them to check the affected profile; this feature is specific to supported Pixel devices, not a standard screen on every Android phone. Other Android phones, or a problem that remains
Android interfaces can be customized, so menu names and available troubleshooting options differ. If the standard steps do not resolve the issue, consult the phone maker’s support instructions; Google also advises seeking manufacturer help for custom Android versions when general Bluetooth steps fail: Fix Bluetooth problems on Android.

To narrow down whether the phone or headphones need support, try the headphones with another audio source and try a different Bluetooth audio accessory with the Android phone. If only one device consistently fails across those checks, contact that device’s manufacturer.
