First inspect the image and confirm the page state; then check screenshot options and isolate the affected content before changing browser flags.
Identify what “blank” means in the output
Start with the saved artifact, not a list of browser flags. Open the file, confirm it is a valid image, and note its pixel dimensions. Record the exact screenshot call and whether you requested PNG, JPEG, or another format.
- All white: The image has dimensions but the expected page content is absent. Check navigation and page state first.
- Transparent: Inspect alpha transparency. Playwright’s
omitBackgroundoption intentionally omits the default background; a transparent image can look white in viewers that display transparency on white. - Cropped or unexpectedly small: Check
clip, viewport dimensions, and whether you expected a viewport or full-page capture. - Only one region is missing: Determine whether the absent content is in an iframe, canvas, lazy-loaded section, or below the fold. A partially blank image is not the same problem as a page that never loaded.
Keep a short record of the Playwright version, browser engine and channel, operating system or container, headed/headless mode, navigation result, and content type. Those details matter when a symptom appears only in one runtime.
Confirm navigation and page state before capture
A screenshot file can be produced even when the intended page did not load. Check the final URL after navigation, inspect the navigation result, and wait for a meaningful element to become visible before capturing. A visible element is useful evidence that part of the page rendered, but it does not prove that every image, embedded frame, or below-the-fold section is ready.

If navigation redirects, fails, or returns an error page, diagnose that separately rather than treating the image as proof that screenshot rendering failed. Choose a readiness condition suited to the site: a selector may appear before images or client-side content finish rendering.
Check screenshot options and capture mode
Playwright’s Page screenshot API documents the capture options and their defaults. In particular, fullPage defaults to false, so an ordinary page screenshot covers the viewport, not the entire scrollable document.

For a clean baseline, remove unnecessary options and capture the current viewport. Add fullPage, a clip, transparency, or animation changes one at a time so you can see which setting changes the result.

If both are blank, revisit page readiness and the element selector. Element screenshots can also reveal whether the blank region corresponds to a specific widget.
Investigate iframe, canvas, and below-the-fold content
Embedded content may behave differently from ordinary DOM text. For an iframe, locate the frame and inspect or capture a relevant element inside it where possible. You can also capture the iframe element itself:

Cross-origin restrictions and the embedded site’s behavior can limit what you can inspect. For canvas content, check whether the application has drawn into the canvas before capture and whether its rendering depends on a particular browser or graphics environment. For lazy-loaded content, scroll the relevant area into view and wait for the page’s own loading signal before comparing captures.
A Playwright issue opened in May 2026 reports a blank YouTube iframe area in a full-page image with Playwright 1.59.1, while a viewport capture after scrolling and an iframe-element capture showed content. That is an individual report, not a universal iframe diagnosis or workaround: the issue report is useful as an example of why comparing capture scope and recording runtime details matters.
Isolate browser and runtime differences
If the same URL and page state work in one environment but not another, change one variable at a time. Record the Playwright version, browser engine and channel, headed versus headless mode, operating system, and container or CI environment. Then compare the same reproduction while changing just one of those dimensions.

- Confirm the installed Playwright version and the browser build it is using.
- Repeat in headed and headless modes if both are available to you.
- Compare the same browser engine and channel before switching engines.
- Check whether the affected content relies on GPU, WebGL, video, or other browser-specific rendering.
- Keep navigation, viewport, page state, and screenshot arguments constant during each comparison.
A historical report about Playwright 1.35.0 described a blank white Chromium image after failed navigation in a particular headless Windows setup. It is environment-specific, not a general explanation for white screenshots: see the report’s stated conditions. Separately, a Playwright project issue discussion about the Chromium headless transition associated with version 1.49 notes changes in screenshot output and variation in GPU/WebGL availability, features, and performance. That context is a reason to reproduce carefully, not evidence that a GPU flag will fix an individual capture: read the project issue discussion.
Avoid changing multiple launch flags at once. Flags can alter the browser environment and make the result harder to interpret; use them only when a minimal reproduction points to a specific browser behavior.

Visual stability can address intermittent animation or layout changes, but a consistently blank screenshot remains blank. Assert that the expected content exists or is visible separately, then use the screenshot assertion to detect visual differences once the page is in the intended state.

No. The Page API’s fullPage option defaults to false, which captures the viewport.
