If an IMGKit render is blank, first determine whether the entire output is blank or only images embedded in otherwise-rendered HTML are missing. Those symptoms point to different problems. IMGKit delegates rendering to wkhtmltoimage, so check the input, renderer executable, and resource access rather than assuming the wrapper itself is at fault. The steps below cover Python imgkit and the Ruby IMGKit gem; their APIs differ.
First identify what is blank
Look at the generated PNG or other output and classify the failure before changing settings.
- The whole image is blank: The HTML may not have loaded, the renderer may have failed or timed out, or the rendering environment may be missing a required display setup.
- Text and layout appear, but an embedded image is missing: Focus on the image source, file access, and resource loading. This is different from a completely blank render.
- The result is intermittently blank: Preserve the exact input and renderer output, then compare a minimal case with the failing page. Do not assume a single cause from the intermittent symptom alone.
Also confirm which library you use. The Python package is commonly imported as imgkit; the Ruby project is IMGKit. Both rely on wkhtmltoimage, but their wrapper configuration and method calls are not interchangeable. The Python project documents rendering from a URL, file, or HTML string (Python IMGKit README; Ruby IMGKit README).
Check that the renderer is installed and reachable
Python IMGKit invokes the external wkhtmltoimage executable. If it is missing, the wrong executable is found, or the configured path points somewhere inaccessible, the wrapper cannot render reliably.

Python: verify the executable and configure its path
Check what your process can find on its PATH:
wkhtmltoimage --versionIf the command is not found, install a compatible wkhtmltoimage build for your operating system and deployment environment, or configure its explicit location. The Python wrapper exposes a configuration object for the binary path; keep the value aligned with the path visible to the process that runs your application.

Ruby: check the gem’s binary configuration
The Ruby gem also depends on the renderer executable. Verify its installation and follow that project’s setup instructions for pointing IMGKit at the binary; do not copy Python configuration code into a Ruby application. Run the renderer command directly
When Python IMGKit raises an error, its troubleshooting guidance recommends running the command shown in the error message. This separates a wrapper issue from a renderer or input failure. While diagnosing, retain both standard output and standard error; suppressing output can hide the cause.
- Capture the complete exception and the command IMGKit reports.
- Run that command in the same machine, container, user account, and environment as the application.
- Record the command’s exit status and all output, including stderr.
- Compare the result with the wrapper-generated output and note the exact
wkhtmltoimageversion.
The Python README notes that some versions can fail with segmentation faults, so a crash should be recorded as renderer failure rather than treated as proof that the HTML is empty (Python IMGKit README).
When only embedded images are missing
For an image that renders locally in a browser but not in IMGKit, first establish whether the renderer can access the resource from its own runtime. A browser on your workstation and a renderer inside a server or container do not necessarily share files, permissions, network access, or a working directory.

- For a local
src, confirm the file exists at that path on the host or inside the container runningwkhtmltoimage. - Check that the renderer’s operating-system user has permission to read the file and parent directories.
- Verify the path form expected by your operating system and how the HTML is loaded. A relative path may resolve differently when the source is a string, a file, or a URL.
- For remote images, confirm the renderer can reach the host and that the URL is valid from that environment.
Changing slashes is not a guaranteed fix. A Windows 10 issue report described a blank rectangle for local images with wkhtmltopdf version 0.12.6, even after trying multiple path spellings; the report did not establish a resolution. It is an example of an environment-specific failure, not a universal diagnosis (wkhtmltopdf issue #4926).
Check headless-server display requirements
Some headless server environments may need a virtual display such as Xvfb. This is conditional: it is not a blanket requirement for every IMGKit installation. If rendering works on a desktop but fails in a headless deployment, test the environment’s display setup and consult the Python wrapper’s documented xvfb option. Compare the result in the same deployment context instead of adding Xvfb blindly (Python IMGKit README).

If the executable and environment checks do not explain the output, minimize the input. This is a diagnostic method: it helps distinguish a general renderer problem from a resource or page-specific issue.

- Render a short HTML string containing only visible text. If that is blank too, concentrate on the renderer, wrapper configuration, or execution environment.
- Add one image to the same minimal document. If the text remains but the image disappears, investigate that image’s source and access.
- Add the original CSS and other page elements back in small groups until the failure returns.
- Where it is appropriate for your application, compare a local asset with a publicly reachable image URL. This can reveal whether the problem is local-file access or more general rendering.
Keep the exact input type in your notes: Python IMGKit accepts a URL, a file, or a string, and those inputs can change how resource locations are resolved (Python IMGKit README).

What to include in a useful bug report
If the minimal reproduction still fails, report enough detail for someone else to distinguish a package issue from an environment-specific renderer problem.
- Whether you use Python
imgkitor the Ruby IMGKit gem, including the package version. - The operating system and whether execution is desktop, server, container, or headless.
- The exact
wkhtmltoimageversion and how its path is configured. - Whether the output is wholly blank or only embedded images are missing.
- Whether the HTML came from a URL, file, or string, and whether the failed asset is local or remote.
- A minimal input, the exact command where available, and unedited error output.
The Windows local-image report illustrates why version and environment details matter; it did not include a confirmed fix, and the wkhtmltopdf repository was archived on 2023-01-02 (issue #4926).
