A black screenshot can mean three different failures: the saved image is black while Windows looks normal, only one app or video is black, or the live display blanks or flickers when capture starts. Identify which symptom you have before changing drivers or buying hardware. Capture an ordinary desktop window with Snipping Tool, compare it with a second Windows shortcut, and then follow the branch that matches what turns black.
1. Classify what is actually black
Reproduce the problem once and note the exact point of failure:
- Saved-file failure: the snip or image file is black, but the desktop remains visible.
- App or content failure: ordinary desktop captures work, but one program, web page, game, or video appears black.
- Live-display failure: the monitor blanks, flashes, or turns black as you start or finish a capture.
- Tool-interface failure: the Snipping Tool overlay itself is black or unusable.
Open the saved image in another viewer and compare it with a capture of a normal desktop window such as File Explorer. Check whether the live picture returns as soon as the snipping overlay closes. These observations separate a capture-path problem from a display problem; they do not, by themselves, identify a single root cause.
2. Compare two built-in capture methods
Test Snipping Tool
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch it.
- Select New, choose rectangular, window, full-screen, or free-form capture, and capture an ordinary desktop window.
- Save the result and inspect it in Photos or another image viewer.
Microsoft documents these capture modes in its Snipping Tool instructions.

Test a keyboard shortcut
Press Windows+Shift+S and capture the same desktop content. For a full-screen image, use Windows+Print Screen when your keyboard supports it. Microsoft also lists Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar for some devices without a usable Print Screen key; hardware firmware determines whether that alternate works. If one method works, use it as a temporary workaround and concentrate on the failing tool, shortcut, or application. If both methods produce black images from ordinary desktop content, the failure is broader than one capture interface; the available Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal cause.
3. When the entire display blanks or flickers
Do not treat a display blackout as an image-file problem. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting includes resetting the graphics driver with Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. The screen may flicker or beep while Windows reloads the graphics driver. Save work first if possible, then wait for the picture to return.

Microsoft says display-driver problems or incompatible applications usually cause screen flickering and notes that the same shortcut may help in some cases. Its separate flicker guidance recommends distinguishing an app problem from a driver problem. Try these checks:

- Disconnect recently added displays, docks, or adapters one at a time and test again.
- Install Windows updates and the display-driver update supplied for your computer, or roll back a driver if the issue began immediately after an update.
- Close recently installed screen recorders, overlays, remote-control tools, and hardware-monitoring utilities before repeating the capture.
The graphics-reset shortcut is relevant when Windows itself is blank or unstable. It is not demonstrated as a cure for every screenshot that saves as black while the desktop remains normal.
4. When only one app, website, or video is black
Capture a different window first. If that works, the capture engine is probably functioning and the affected application needs investigation. Check the app’s updates, display or hardware-acceleration settings, and any support guidance from its vendor or administrator. Test the same page or video in another supported browser only as a comparison, not as proof of a particular cause.

Overlay software is a credible case-specific lead, not a universal explanation. A Microsoft Q&A report describes a website overlay coinciding with black captured content. A separate Microsoft PowerToys issue records one report in which an NVIDIA App overlay was suspected. Close or disable overlays temporarily—such as game bars, GPU overlays, meeting controls, chat bubbles, and screen annotation tools—then repeat the ordinary-window test.
Do not assume that protected-content restrictions explain your particular image. The available Microsoft material does not confirm DRM as the cause here, and instructions claiming to defeat content protections would not be an appropriate general fix. If only a managed or subscription service is affected, ask its provider or your organization’s administrator for supported capture options.
5. Repair the capture tools without losing the diagnostic trail
Update and reset Snipping Tool
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates.
- Restart Windows and repeat the ordinary desktop test.
- If Snipping Tool alone still fails, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Snipping Tool → Advanced options.
- Choose Repair first. If that does not help, choose Reset, then test again. Resetting can remove the app’s local preferences.
Reduce variables
- Temporarily close overlays and screen-recording utilities.
- Use one monitor and disconnect a dock or adapter for a test.
- Capture a static desktop window rather than a video, animation, or hardware-accelerated canvas.
- Record whether the failure occurs only under a standard account, a particular browser, or after waking from sleep.
These steps make the comparison meaningful. Changing several drivers, registry settings, and applications at once makes it impossible to tell which change mattered.

6. If your keyboard lacks a working Print Screen key
Use Snipping Tool or Windows+Shift+S instead of buying hardware. A USB keyboard with a working Print Screen key is a narrow option only when your current keyboard lacks a usable key and the alternate shortcut is unavailable. Microsoft’s shortcut documentation supports alternate key combinations on some hardware, but a keyboard cannot repair a graphics driver, an overlay, a blank display, or app-specific content. Avoid treating it as a general fix.

9. When to escalate
Contact your device manufacturer or organization’s IT support when black screens continue outside capture, occur across multiple applications, follow a driver or display change, or affect external monitors and docking hardware. Include the Windows edition and update state, display-driver version, monitor or dock model, which capture methods you tested, whether Task Manager flickered, and whether closing overlays changed the result. That evidence is more useful than reporting only that “screenshots are black.”
