Start by updating Bayonetta 3, then match the fix to the symptom: Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps can help with a frozen or unresponsive downloaded game, while a frame-rate dip is not necessarily something a console setting can fix. The latest version listed on Nintendo’s Americas support page is Ver. 1.2.0, released January 10, 2023; its documented fixes include Viola’s block and Witch Time behavior, not a general performance or loading-time fix.
First identify what is going wrong
Choose the branch that best matches what you see. A slowdown during combat is different from a game that will not respond, and a missed Viola block is different from a faulty controller.
- Stutter or slowdown during gameplay: update the game and system, but do not assume that a console setting will eliminate persistent frame pacing or performance limits. Nintendo’s update notes do not claim a general framerate fix.
- Long loading, a freeze, or an unresponsive game: follow Nintendo’s general downloaded-software troubleshooting sequence below. It is not a confirmed Bayonetta 3-specific defect diagnosis.
- A particular move or progression problem: check whether it matches a bug Nintendo listed as fixed in Ver. 1.2.0.
- Controls that fail only in Bayonetta 3: check the game update and the relevant move behavior before concluding that the controller is faulty.
- An error code: use Nintendo’s guidance for that specific code rather than treating it as an ordinary performance issue.

Update Bayonetta 3
Nintendo’s Americas support page lists Ver. 1.2.0 as the latest update in its published history. Nintendo dates that release January 10, 2023 for the Americas; the Japan update record dates the same version January 11, 2023. Check the version shown on your own Switch rather than assuming the console has updated.

- On the HOME Menu, highlight Bayonetta 3 without starting it.
- Press the + or − button.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
- After the update, start the game and check the version displayed on its title screen.
Nintendo’s Americas update history also lists Ver. 1.1.0, released October 27, 2022, with Naive Angel Mode options, online ranking features, and general balance and issue adjustments. The later Ver. 1.2.0 notes name specific fixes and adjustments; they do not promise that all slowdowns, long loads, or control complaints will be resolved. If the game loads slowly, freezes, or stops responding
Nintendo’s sequence is for downloaded Switch software generally. Try it in order, stopping if the problem is resolved.

- Restart the console. If the console responds, hold POWER for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Restart. If it is completely unresponsive, hold POWER for 20 seconds to force it off, then turn it on again.
- Install any available system update and check for a Bayonetta 3 software update using the HOME Menu steps above.
- Check for corrupt data. Open System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software → Bayonetta 3 → Check for Corrupt Data.
- Delete and redownload the game only if needed. Before deleting the software, make sure you can redownload your purchased copy. This step is Nintendo’s general remedy for downloaded software problems; it does not establish that corrupted data caused your particular issue.

If Viola’s block or Witch Time is not working as expected
Ver. 1.2.0 changed Viola’s block and Witch Time behavior. Nintendo says it added a block judgment during the release animation, made Witch Time activation easier to recognize with an added effect, and lengthened the activation window and Witch Time duration. Nintendo Japan’s notes add that guarding at the moment Viola is hit can succeed and trigger Witch Time, while rapidly repeating guard reduces the activation window. If your installed version predates Ver. 1.2.0, update before judging the timing against the revised behavior.

The same version’s listed fixes address particular issues, including a Chapter 7 Verse 5 progression bug and named move or animation bugs. Nintendo Japan also records changes to Niflheim conditions and an adjustment intended to reduce camera situations with poor visibility. These are targeted patch notes, not a promise that every timing, camera, or progression problem has been fixed. Nintendo Japan’s Ver. 1.2.0 record provides additional detail.
If buttons or sticks misbehave
Test the same buttons or sticks in the Switch HOME Menu and another game. If the problem occurs there too, use Nintendo’s Joy-Con troubleshooting support linked from its Bayonetta 3 update support page. If input fails only in Bayonetta 3, check that the title is updated and whether the behavior matches a documented game issue before pursuing controller service. One game’s control problem alone is not evidence that you need replacement hardware.

What these steps can and cannot fix
Nintendo’s available guidance documents an update path, a set of title-specific fixes, and general steps for downloaded software that freezes or does not respond. It does not provide a measured framerate, loading-time benchmark by Switch model or play mode, or a setting guaranteed to improve Bayonetta 3 performance. If the game is updated and still has repeatable stutter without freezing or a specific error, these software checks may rule out some common problems, but they cannot establish or remove a performance limit.
