If YouTube audio and video drift apart during a long playlist, first check whether it happens on one upload or across many, and whether the mismatch is already present or grows over time. Pause and resume once; then test the same video in another browser or device. If the mismatch repeats at the same point across devices, the upload may be faulty. If it changes with your player, device, or connection, use the steps below to isolate local playback. YouTube does not document a universal one-step fix for progressive sync drift.

First, identify what “out of sync” means

A long playlist can expose playback problems, but “stream” can mean two different things. In ordinary playlist playback, sync drift means the sound and picture no longer match within the video. In a live broadcast, latency means you are behind the event; that is not necessarily an audio/video sync problem.

  • Constant offset: audio is already early or late at the beginning and stays about the same distance apart.
  • Progressive drift: playback begins in sync, then the mismatch grows as you watch.
  • Buffering or stuttering: playback pauses or skips as well as, or instead of, becoming unsynchronized.
  • One-upload problem: one video is wrong at a particular point, while other videos play normally.

These patterns help locate the issue; they do not by themselves prove a particular cause.

Work through viewer-side fixes in order

1. Pause, resume, and reload once

Pause the video, resume it, and check whether the picture and sound line up again. If not, reload the video once. This is a quick diagnostic, not an official guaranteed cure for drift. Note whether sync returns temporarily, whether it was wrong from the start, and whether audio leads or trails.

2. Restart and update the player and device

  1. Close and reopen the YouTube app or browser.
  2. If the problem remains, restart the device.
  3. Install available updates for the browser or YouTube app and the device software.
  4. On a computer, close unused tabs and temporarily disable browser extensions. YouTube recommends checking extensions for video playback errors; an incognito test with extensions disabled can help distinguish an extension-related problem. An extension is a possibility to test, not an established cause of sync drift.
  5. Play the same video in another supported browser or on another device, if available.

If another browser or device stays in sync while the original does not, focus on the original playback setup. If every setup shows the same mismatch at the same timestamp, move to the upload check.

3. Check for connection-related playback trouble

If the video also buffers or stutters, test another network connection if possible and temporarily lower playback quality. YouTube recommends checking connection speed, trying another connection, and changing quality when troubleshooting playback problems. Its approximate sustained-speed recommendations are:

4. Test browser rendering only if symptoms point that way

If the issue occurs only in one browser, compare with another. For a rendering symptom such as a green picture with audible sound, YouTube suggests turning off hardware acceleration in Chrome and updating graphics drivers. Those instructions address that visual symptom, not progressive sync drift generally. You can try the setting as a reversible diagnostic test, but restore it if playback gets worse; do not assume hardware acceleration or a driver is the cause without evidence from your setup.

When the upload itself is out of sync

Play the same upload at the same timestamp on another device or browser. If the sound and picture mismatch repeats at that point across different playback setups, a local setting is unlikely to fix that copy. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance says the audio and video track durations should match and recommends correcting the tracks in editing software before uploading.

Tell the uploader the video link and the timestamp where the mismatch occurs, or look for another upload. Viewers cannot repair the source tracks in the YouTube player.

If you mean a live YouTube broadcast

Being behind a live event is different from sound and picture being out of sync. YouTube explains that a lower-latency stream has less read-ahead buffer in the player, which can increase buffering; network congestion can also delay a stream. A viewer generally cannot change the creator’s encoder latency setting.

If you are the creator, test the broadcast with representative audio and motion, check stream health, and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance recommends upload bandwidth headroom: its cited 20% figure is a creator-side recommendation, not a viewer download target. A live stream can be delayed without its audio and picture being desynchronized.
