If podcast audio is out of sync with the picture on a YouTube live stream, first find where the mismatch begins: in the encoder’s local preview or recording, in YouTube’s delivered stream, or only on a particular viewer’s device. Then determine whether audio is ahead of video or behind it. In OBS, correct a stable mismatch at the affected source with Sync Offset for audio or Render Delay for video; don’t guess a universal millisecond value.
First distinguish lip sync from stream latency
Lip sync is the relative timing between a speaker’s mouth and the voice heard by viewers. Stream latency is the end-to-end time between capture by the camera or encoder and display to a viewer. YouTube’s latency settings affect that delay and can involve a trade-off with buffering; they are not a direct control for matching voice to mouth. If a stream starts several seconds late but its picture and sound line up, that is latency, not an audio-sync fault. YouTube explains latency and live-stream settings.
Identify who has the problem and where it starts
Check whether it affects one viewer or many
Monitor the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room and, if possible, on a separate viewer device and connection. If only one person sees the problem, their device or internet connection is a probable cause. If viewers on separate connections report the same mismatch, investigate the encoder and stream. If affected viewers share one network, that network may be involved. These are diagnostic clues, not guarantees. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends using the scope of the problem to help isolate its source.
Inspect the encoder preview and a local recording
Look and listen in the encoder preview, then check a local archive or recording if one is available. If the recording is already out of sync, the problem is likely somewhere in the local source or encoder path; changing YouTube’s latency setting is unlikely to repair that source-level offset. YouTube advises checking the audio and video sources routed to the encoder, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive. If the local output looks and sounds right but viewers still report trouble, review stream health and delivery instead.

Find out which signal leads
Make a short test with movement and sound that are easy to compare—for example, clap once where the camera can see your hands meet. Replay it in the encoder preview or local recording. Repeat the test to make sure a playback hiccup did not mislead you. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A clapperboard or slate is optional; a hand clap is enough, and neither is a repair.
- Audio ahead of video: the sound occurs before the visible movement. Delay the affected audio source.
- Audio behind video: the visible movement occurs before its sound. Delay the affected video source, if your encoder supports it.
- Timing changes during the stream: this is drift, not simply a fixed offset. A constant delay may not fix it; check whether the problem is also present in the local recording and investigate source routing, encoder health, CPU load, and stream metrics.
Correct a stable mismatch in OBS
If audio is ahead, add an audio sync offset
- In OBS, open Advanced Audio Properties and locate the affected audio source’s Sync Offset (ms) control. OBS Project forum guidance describes this control for adjusting audio timing; menu labels may change between versions.
- Adjust only the audio source that is early, using small increments based on your test rather than a value copied from a tutorial.
- Record or preview another clap test and confirm the sound now coincides with the visible contact. Recheck the stream preview or archive and, where possible, a separate viewer device.
If video is early, delay the image source
- In OBS, apply the Render Delay filter to the relevant image source, such as the webcam. OBS documents this filter as a way to sync a webcam image with microphone audio: OBS Render Delay filter documentation.
- Adjust the filter in small, test-based increments. Change only the source that needs correction.
- Repeat the movement-and-sound test, then inspect the output again. If the mismatch varies over time, don’t treat a single fixed delay as a complete solution.
For the audio control’s OBS menu path, see the OBS Project forum discussion of audio delay.

If the local signal is aligned, check delivery and stream health
Review YouTube’s stream health and any reported errors. If the encoder preview and local archive are in sync but delivery is not, check the outbound connection: YouTube recommends testing upload speed and contacting your internet provider if the connection is faulty. Leave upload headroom rather than using all available capacity. A connection-speed change is not a substitute for correcting a local source offset. For YouTube’s testing and monitoring recommendations, see its live-streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.

When audio keeps drifting out of sync
A mismatch that worsens over time is different from a steady lip-sync offset. First compare the encoder preview and local recording with the delivered stream: that helps establish whether drift begins before or after the encoder output. Then check that the intended microphone, mixer or interface output, camera, and capture-device audio are routed to the intended sources and only where needed. Review encoder errors, CPU load, and stream metrics, and confirm the encoder software is current. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers these checks, but does not establish one universal drift-specific setting or fix; avoid assuming a constant offset will solve a changing problem.
