To fix audio out of sync in a YouTube stream that uses Linode, first find where the mismatch begins: in the local capture or encoder, on a relay or transcode path, at YouTube ingestion, or only in viewer playback. Linode is part of the setup described in the title, but that alone does not establish it as the cause. Compare the encoder output and a local recording with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, then correct the stage where the fault first appears.
Find where the audio and video first go out of sync
Make a short test with a clear visual event paired with a sharp sound, such as a hand clap. Compare the encoder’s output or local archive with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, then check the stream’s playback. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder, its errors and CPU load, the local archive, and the outbound connection (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
- The local output is already out of sync: Start with capture devices, source timestamps and routing, audio processing, and encoder configuration.
- The local output is clean, but YouTube’s preview or stream is not: Check YouTube’s ingestion health messages and any relay or transcode stages between the encoder and YouTube.
- Only some viewers report the problem: Compare playback on different devices and networks before changing encoder settings.
Establish how Linode fits into the chain before changing server settings. For example, the encoder might run on a workstation and send to a Linode relay, encoding might happen on the Linode instance, or the server might serve another role. The available information does not establish a Linode-specific cause or configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the encoder and audio sources
Inspect the encoder’s own output first. Confirm which audio and video sources are routed into it, check for encoder errors and high CPU load, and review a local archive if one is available. YouTube advises checking the encoder software version, output, sources, errors, CPU load, archives, and outbound connectivity; a clean encoder output points the investigation farther down the chain (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).

If you use OBS Studio
OBS supports a per-source audio sync offset. Select the affected source and inspect its sync-offset setting; the OBS source API documents that the value can be set and retrieved (OBS Studio 33.0.0 source API reference). Measure the mismatch before changing it: determine whether sound leads or lags the picture, and by how much. There is no evidence here for a correct offset value for your stream, so do not apply an arbitrary number of milliseconds.
Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream-health indicator and its timestamped messages. YouTube’s error guide covers incorrect stream formats and audio configuration issues, including codec, configuration, and sample-rate guidance for the cited ingestion setup (YouTube live-stream error messages).

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
Use the message and your encoder’s actual settings to decide what to correct. A sample-rate or format change is not a universal audio-sync fix; the existence of an audio configuration warning does not prove it caused a timing mismatch.

Check the route from your setup to YouTube
Test outbound upload capacity while the representative stream is running. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, and notes that other users or applications sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream (YouTube streaming tips). Monitor the stream during transmission rather than relying only on a test taken when the network is otherwise idle.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
If the stream uses multiple stages, check each one in order: encoder, Linode relay or processing stage, and YouTube preview. Compare whether the offset stays fixed or changes over time, whether audio leads or lags, and whether all viewers experience it. Those observations help distinguish a source or encoder timing issue from a fault farther along the path.
Choose latency for the stream’s needs—not as a sync adjustment
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture at the camera or encoder and display to viewers. Lower latency can increase buffering, so choose a latency mode based on interaction needs and stream reliability (YouTube live-stream settings). Latency is not a guaranteed audio/video synchronization control; changing it at random may not correct the underlying mismatch.

Test the complete chain before the event
Before relying on the stream, test the full setup with representative motion and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the available upload capacity, and monitor audio and video throughout the test. YouTube’s guidance recommends pre-event testing and continuous monitoring, with approximately 20% upload-bandwidth headroom (YouTube live-streaming tips).
- Run a short test using the same capture, encoder, Linode stages, and YouTube destination planned for the event.
- Pair a sharp sound with an obvious visual event, and compare the encoder output, any local archive, YouTube preview, and viewer playback.
- Record whether audio leads or lags, whether the gap is fixed or drifts, and which stages and viewers show it.
- Check stream-health messages and encoder errors while the test is active; change only a setting tied to an observed problem.
- Repeat the test after making a correction.
Common causes and what to try
| What you observe | Where to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Audio and video are already misaligned in the encoder output | Capture, source routing or timestamps, audio processing, encoder settings | Inspect sources and encoder output; if using OBS, measure the source offset before adjusting it. |
| Encoder output is aligned, but YouTube preview is not | Ingestion settings, outbound path, relay or transcode stages | Read timestamped Live Control Room health messages and compare each intermediate stage. |
| Sync changes or the stream behaves inconsistently under load | Outbound bandwidth and shared network use | Test during a representative stream, leave the recommended bandwidth headroom, and monitor transmission. |
| Only some viewers notice a mismatch | Viewer devices and networks | Compare playback across devices and connections before changing the encoder. |
| A YouTube health message reports a format or audio setting problem | Encoder configuration and the specific ingestion warning | Correct the setting identified by the message; do not assume it explains sync unless the evidence supports that link. |
Keep the evidence specific to live streams
YouTube’s separate advice about audio/video sync in uploaded videos includes checking whether track durations match, but that page addresses uploaded files, not a live-stream-specific correction (YouTube upload audio or video troubleshooting). Use the live-stream checks above to diagnose this stream.
