First, compare the lesson source, encoder output, local recording, and YouTube playback before changing settings. If the local recording is also out of sync, investigate the source or encoder path. If it is aligned but YouTube playback is not, focus on the stream or playback path. Also note whether the mismatch stays roughly constant or grows over time: those patterns help narrow the cause, but the right correction depends on your encoder and setup.

Find where the sync problem starts

Compare the same moment in each available copy. Use a clear event—such as a spoken word paired with a visible gesture—rather than judging sync from different sections of a long lesson.

  1. Check the lesson source. If possible, monitor the audio and video before they enter the encoder. Look for a delay that is already present there.
  2. Check the encoder preview or output. Compare it with the source. If the mismatch first appears here, inspect the routed audio and video sources and the encoder’s status or error messages.
  3. Check a local recording. Play it from the beginning and again later. See whether it is wrong throughout or whether the gap increases. Keep this file for comparison.
  4. Check YouTube playback. Compare the same moment in the Live Control Room preview or stream playback with the local recording. If the local copy is aligned but YouTube is not, the problem may be downstream of the local recording.

YouTube recommends checking the encoder, local archive, CPU load, and encoder errors when troubleshooting audio or video problems. If the encoder output looks healthy, its guidance also points to the outbound internet connection as an area to inspect. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues

Use the pattern as a clue, not a diagnosis

  • Local recording is out of sync: Start with the sources and routing into the encoder, then inspect encoder state and errors.
  • Local recording is aligned, YouTube is not: Inspect Live Control Room health information and the stream configuration. The comparison narrows the fault but does not identify a universal fix.
  • The gap is steady: Note its approximate size and whether it is present from the start. This can help when checking source or encoder timing.
  • The gap grows over time: Compare early and late moments in the local recording and YouTube playback. This suggests a timing problem that changes over the session, but the available YouTube guidance does not prescribe one correction for every encoder.

Check the encoder and YouTube stream health

Open the encoder’s stream status and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health messages. Resolve any reported video-format, audio-format, or connection issue rather than changing settings at random. YouTube’s documented error cases include H.264 video and AAC audio, and recommend a 44.1 kHz audio sample rate in the cases described. YouTube also says primary and backup streams should use the same audio sample rate. These are configuration checks—not proof that a sample-rate change will fix a particular sync fault. • Do not assume a format or sample-rate change is a sync adjustment; recheck the local recording and YouTube playback after any change.

If the problem is in an uploaded or archived video

For an uploaded video, inspect the audio and video track durations in your editing workflow. YouTube advises making sure the durations match and editing the tracks in video-editing software before upload if they differ. This advice applies to uploads; it is not a universal remedy for a live stream that is out of sync. YouTube: Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads

Protect the recording during a 24/7 stream

Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a continuous lesson stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” It recommends keeping a local archive backup. For a 24/7 stream, verify that the local recording file is being written and that it plays correctly; an archive on YouTube may not cover the full run. YouTube: Archive live streams

Prevent the fault from returning

Before leaving a lesson stream unattended, test with the same kind of speech, movement, and source routing used in the real lesson. Check the Live Control Room preview and health messages, then inspect a local recording. During operation, periodically verify the local archive and stream health instead of assuming that a live indicator means the recording remains synchronized. YouTube’s live troubleshooting guidance covers encoder and stream-health checks: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
