If your podcast starts in sync but the audio gradually moves ahead of or behind the video, treat it as a timing or clock problem—not as a fixed delay. First compare OBS’s local output with what viewers hear on YouTube, then check audio sample rates, independent device clocks, monitoring, and OBS performance. A stable gap is a different fault and may be corrected with a measured offset.
First identify what is out of sync—and when
“Out of sync” can describe several different problems: a steady delay, a gap that grows during a long stream, monitoring that sounds wrong only to you, or an archive that differs from the live output. These symptoms point to different parts of the signal path. Do not assume YouTube is responsible just because the audience notices the problem there.
Tell a fixed offset from progressive drift
- Fixed offset: Audio is consistently early or late by roughly the same amount at the start and later in the stream. This is a stable latency. A measured sync offset in the relevant source path may correct it.
- Progressive drift: Audio and video begin together, but the gap increases over time. A static offset only shifts the starting point; it cannot correct an error that keeps accumulating. Investigate sample rates, device clocks, and output timing.
Locate where the fault appears
Compare an OBS local recording or output with the audience-facing YouTube live playback, and check the archive separately if one exists. Listen or inspect at the beginning and again after enough runtime for the reported problem to become apparent. There is no single standard test duration; run the comparison long enough to reproduce your usual onset.

- If only local monitoring sounds delayed but the recording and stream are aligned, investigate the monitoring path rather than changing the program output.
- If the live stream is aligned but an uploaded archive is not, compare the source file and archive, including their audio and video track durations.
Fix a steady offset differently from accumulating drift
For a stable gap, measure before adjusting
Use a repeatable sound-and-picture event, such as a clap, to estimate whether audio is consistently early or late. Apply a fixed sync offset only in the source path that produces the measured error, then record and check the result. Offset controls and their effects depend on the hardware and software path; there is no universal millisecond value that fixes every setup.

If the gap grows as the stream runs, do not keep changing a constant offset to chase it. A fixed adjustment may make the beginning appear right while leaving later audio increasingly wrong. Continue with the clock and rate checks below.
Check OBS and device sample rates
In OBS, open Settings → Audio and note the selected sample rate. Compare it with the configured rate for each audio device used by the podcast, including capture devices. YouTube Live identifies 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates and flags a mismatch between primary and backup streams. Those recommendations are configuration checks, not proof that every OBS drift problem is caused by a rate mismatch.

- Write down the sample rate selected in OBS.
- Check the audio device or operating-system control panel for the rate configured on each source device.
- Where supported, align the devices and OBS to the same rate, then restart or reconnect devices if their settings require it.
- If you use primary and backup feeds, confirm that their sample rates match.
- Make a sustained local recording and compare its beginning and later sections before testing the live stream again.
Changing rates can affect how a device behaves or whether it remains available to OBS. If a device stops working, restore a supported setting and verify the device selection and routing before going live.
Investigate independent device clocks
When a podcast uses separate USB microphones, capture devices, or other audio sources, each device may rely on its own clock. Two devices set to the same nominal sample rate do not necessarily run at precisely the same rate. Over a long session, their timing can diverge.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
If testing points to separate devices as the source of progressive drift, try consolidating the relevant inputs through one audio interface or another common routing path. This is setup-dependent, not a guaranteed fix: the interface must have the right inputs, connection, and routing for your equipment. Avoid buying hardware until comparisons show that the symptom follows the independent devices rather than appearing elsewhere in the output path.
Make sure the problem is in the program output, not monitoring
Check the actual recording or audience-facing stream rather than relying only on OBS’s local monitoring. A monitoring buffer or clock issue can make the operator hear a delay that is not present in the recording or stream. An OBS forum discussion describes a scenario in which monitoring follows a device clock while other output follows OBS’s clock; it is an individual explanation of that reported case, not a universal diagnosis.

- Record a short local sample with the same sources and routing used for the stream.
- Compare the recording with what you heard through monitoring.
- If only monitoring is wrong, inspect its routing and device selection. Test a mute, reroute, or reset only as a way to isolate that path; those are scenario-specific workarounds, not universal OBS fixes.
- Do not add a program-output delay unless the recording or audience-facing stream also demonstrates the same error.
Use OBS Stats to separate dropped frames from audio drift
Open View → Stats in OBS while the stream runs. Check for missed or skipped frames and review whether OBS reports dropped frames. OBS guidance associates dropped frames with an unstable connection or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate, which causes video frames to be dropped. That is a network or bitrate diagnostic path; a dropped-frame symptom alone does not establish that audio clocks are drifting.
- If Stats shows dropped frames, use OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance and investigate connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
- If Stats does not show a relevant frame or network problem but the audio gap keeps growing, continue investigating sample rates, device clocks, and output timing.
- Change bitrate or network conditions to address connection-related frame drops, not as a presumed cure for clock drift.
Treat an archive-only sync problem as an upload issue
If the live output is aligned but an uploaded video or archive is not, compare the source file with YouTube playback and check whether the audio and video track durations match. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance recommends matching track durations and lists AAC-LC and 44.1 or 48 kHz among upload audio settings. This advice applies to uploaded videos; it is not a universal repair for a live encoder problem.

Common symptoms and next checks
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The gap is about the same at the start and later | Stable latency in a source or output path | Measure the offset and adjust only the relevant path. |
| The gap increases during a long stream | Timing, sample-rate alignment, or independent device clocks | Compare OBS and device rates; test the actual output over sustained runtime. |
| Only your monitoring sounds delayed | Monitoring buffer, clock, or routing | Compare monitoring with a local recording and audience-facing output. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Connection stability or bitrate capacity | Use OBS network troubleshooting; do not treat frame drops alone as proof of clock drift. |
| The live stream is aligned, but an uploaded video is not | Source file or upload/archive handling | Compare the file and playback; check audio and video track durations. |
