If audio starts in sync with the video but gradually falls behind or moves ahead, an OBS Sync Offset is unlikely to fix the underlying problem: it corrects a steady delay, not one that keeps changing. First determine whether the drift also appears in OBS and a local recording; then check audio sample rates, the affected source’s timestamp setting, and stream and computer health.

Identify what kind of sync problem you have

Watch for a clear sound-and-picture cue near the beginning of a test and again later—for example, a visible clap or slate paired with an audible click. Compare how far apart the cues are at each point. A private or unlisted test, or a local recording, can help you reproduce the fault without relying on a public broadcast.

What you observe What it suggests First useful check
Audio and video have about the same offset throughout. A constant sync offset. Calibrate with a sync cue, then adjust the affected source’s Sync Offset if needed. An OBS community discussion distinguishes a consistent offset from timing that changes over time: OBS Project community discussion.
They start aligned and progressively separate. Gradual drift. Compare OBS preview and a local recording; check sample-rate consistency and the affected source’s timestamp behavior. YouTube documents sample-rate configuration issues, while OBS documents a source-specific timestamp option: YouTube Live configuration issues; OBS audio sources.
The whole stream reaches viewers late, but speech and action remain aligned. Live-stream latency, not necessarily sync drift. Review latency mode, buffering, and network conditions. YouTube defines latency as the time from camera capture to viewer playback: Understand live streaming latency.
Choppy output, dropped frames, overload notices, or disconnections occur too. A performance or connection problem may coexist with the sync symptom. Check YouTube stream health and OBS performance and connection diagnostics. These signals do not, by themselves, establish the cause of gradual audio drift.

Locate where the drift begins

  1. Reproduce the symptom. Run a private or unlisted live test, or record locally, for long enough to see whether the sync changes. Note how long it takes and whether the mismatch grows steadily or appears suddenly.
  2. Compare OBS preview, a local recording, and YouTube playback. If the preview and local recording also drift, investigate the capture source, audio routing, and computer/software path first. If only viewer playback appears affected, inspect YouTube stream health, the network and ingest path, and playback conditions before blaming an audio device. These comparisons help locate the problem, but do not identify a precise cause on their own.

Check audio sample rates and source timing

Keep participating audio sources consistent

Check the audio sample rate selected in OBS and the formats selected or supported by the relevant microphone, capture card, audio interface, and operating system. Keep participating sources at one rate they support. If you use primary and backup ingestion, check that their sample-rate settings match as well.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates and identifies sample-rate and primary/backup stream mismatches as configuration issues. Neither rate is a guaranteed cure for every drift problem: YouTube Live configuration issues.

Test device timestamps only on a relevant source

For an implicated OBS audio input or output capture source, open its properties and compare the result with “Use Device Timestamps” enabled and disabled, if that control is available. Change one variable at a time and repeat the same-duration test. OBS describes the option as an attempt to use information from the audio device to prevent desynchronization; it is off by default and, in the documented source, available on Windows only. Device behavior varies, so do not assume one setting is right for every source: OBS audio sources.

Use Sync Offset only for a steady delay

If the mismatch is stable and repeatable—not progressively increasing—use OBS Advanced Audio Properties to adjust the affected source’s Sync Offset. Recheck with the same sync cue after each change. Do not copy a millisecond value from another setup: offset examples depend on the particular device and configuration. An AVerMedia guide, for example, describes a device-specific workflow rather than a universal setting: AVerMedia’s OBS sync guide.

Check stream health, computer performance, and connectivity

Review YouTube’s stream-health messages

YouTube recommends testing with audio and video motion representative of the actual event before going live, then monitoring stream health and its messages during the broadcast. A representative test can reveal configuration problems, but a clean health display does not prove what is causing gradual drift: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube Live configuration issues.

Separate encoding problems from network problems

  • If OBS reports encoding overload or output is choppy, reduce system and rendering workload and check whether the symptom changes. OBS notes that GPU overload can affect rendering and encoding performance: OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
  • If OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, investigate the connection to the ingest server and whether your connection can sustain the configured bitrate. These issues can interrupt delivery but do not alone prove the cause of audio drift: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

Latency is also distinct from sync drift. YouTube describes most viewers on low-latency streams as experiencing latency below 10 seconds, and most viewers on ultra-low-latency streams as experiencing latency below five seconds. These are descriptions of capture-to-viewer delay, not rates of audio sync errors. YouTube says low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K resolution. Changing latency mode is therefore not a general fix for audio that progressively moves out of sync: Understand live streaming latency.

When the cause remains unclear

Before seeking support, collect details that let someone distinguish a capture problem from a routing, device, software, or delivery issue:

  • OBS version and operating system.
  • Sample rate selected in OBS and on each relevant audio device.
  • Microphone, interface, capture-card, or other source model, and how audio is routed.
  • Whether “Use Device Timestamps” is enabled for the affected source.
  • Whether the OBS preview, local recording, and YouTube playback each drift.
  • How long the test runs before drift appears, and whether it grows steadily.
  • An OBS log from a representative reproduction.

There is no basis here to treat a capture card as the default culprit or assume new hardware is required. A device-clock explanation discussed in OBS community support is a diagnostic lead, not a guaranteed diagnosis; first establish which source and playback path actually show the drift.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the loop itself does not need a camera and you want a YouTube channel to stay live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not fix sync problems in an existing OBS setup; check that your source video is in sync before uploading.
