If audio and video start in sync but drift farther apart as a YouTube livestream runs, check the signal path and audio sample-rate consistency before changing YouTube’s latency setting. Compare the encoder output, a local recording if available, and YouTube playback to find where the mismatch begins. A steady offset is a different problem from drift that accumulates over time.
First, tell fixed offset from accumulating drift
Compare a recognizable sound with a visible event—such as a musical beat with a visual change—near the start of the stream and later in the run. You do not need a particular number of seconds of offset to make this distinction; look at whether the gap remains roughly constant or grows.
- About the same gap throughout: investigate a fixed source delay or sync offset.
- The gap grows over time: investigate sample-rate or clock consistency, changes in the source, and the encoder pipeline.
This is a diagnostic distinction, not a YouTube-defined threshold. YouTube’s latency guidance describes capture-to-playback delay, not a threshold or prescribed repair for cumulative drift: YouTube’s stream latency guidance.

Compare the same moment at each available point in the chain. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, the sources routed to the encoder, CPU load, a local archive, and the outbound internet connection when troubleshooting live streams: YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

- Check the encoder output. Listen to and inspect what your streaming software is sending. If audio and video are already out of sync there, focus on the source, device, or encoder setup rather than YouTube playback.
- Check a local recording, if your setup makes one. Compare its beginning and a later section. A local recording can help distinguish a mismatch in the produced program from one that appears later, but it is useful only if it captures the relevant output path.
- Check YouTube playback. Compare the same moments in the live playback with the encoder output and local recording. If the earlier points are in sync but playback is not, inspect stream health, encoder messages, and the outbound connection before changing source sync.
These comparisons help narrow the cause; they do not by themselves establish a diagnosis. YouTube also recommends testing the setup before going live and monitoring stream health and messages while live: YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Check sample rates in OBS and active audio devices
If you use OBS, inspect its audio sample rate and the formats configured for every active audio device. A mismatch is one plausible cause to test when drift accumulates, especially when more than one device supplies audio. An OBS community support discussion recommends consistent device formats and notes that mismatched rates can cause drift over time or distortion; it is a troubleshooting lead, not a guaranteed explanation: OBS community discussion of audio desynchronization.

- In OBS, open Settings > Audio and note the Sample Rate.
- Check the audio format or sample rate for each active input and output device in its operating-system settings or device control software.
- Where the controls allow it, use a consistent supported rate across OBS and the active devices, then retest. Avoid changing multiple unrelated settings at once; otherwise, it becomes harder to tell what corrected the drift.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. It lists recommended live audio bitrates of 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround sound: YouTube live encoder settings. These are encoder recommendations, not proof that a particular rate will cure drift in your setup. YouTube’s error guidance also identifies incorrect audio sample rates and channel counts as potential configuration errors: YouTube live encoder error guidance.

Check stream health, sources, and encoder load
During the next test, watch the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and review any health messages or encoder errors. Confirm that the intended audio and video sources are routed to the encoder, and check whether high CPU load or the outbound connection coincides with the problem. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring health and messages during the stream; its troubleshooting guidance also calls out these source, encoder, local-recording, and connection checks.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
For an ambient stream, compare early and later sections in the test rather than stopping as soon as the opening looks right. YouTube recommends testing, but its reviewed guidance does not specify a required test duration. Run a test long enough to reveal whether sync changes over time under conditions similar to the stream that had the problem.
Do not confuse YouTube latency with an audio-drift fix
Stream latency is the time between capture and viewer playback. YouTube describes normal latency as suitable for non-interactive streams and says lower-latency options can increase buffering risk. For an ambient stream without real-time interaction, normal latency may be the more appropriate choice if buffering is a concern—but changing latency is not a documented remedy for audio and video that gradually separate within a stream. See YouTube’s latency settings explanation.

Use YouTube’s format figures in context
Some YouTube recommendations concern uploaded videos, not live streaming. YouTube’s upload guidance lists preferred frame rates of 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, or 60 fps, and audio sample rates of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. Those are upload recommendations, not a specific live-stream drift remedy: YouTube video upload encoding settings. For live audio, use the live encoder guidance above rather than treating upload settings as live diagnostics.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a 24/7 ambient stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer or home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
