First find where the mismatch begins—source, encoder, YouTube’s live preview, or viewer playback—before changing audio delay or bitrate. A stream that is simply late or buffering is not necessarily out of sync. Compare the same visible action and sharp sound at each monitoring point, then use connection indicators, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and the actual ingest protocol to choose a fix.
Confirm it is an audio/video sync problem
Choose a repeatable cue with a visible action and a sharp sound, such as a hand clap. Compare that same cue in the original video, any local preview, YouTube’s live preview, and viewer playback if available. Note whether audio leads or trails video, whether the offset stays constant or grows, and the first point where it appears.
- If the source is already out of sync, correct or replace the source before streaming.
- If the source is correct but an encoder preview or output is not, investigate the encoder or playlist playback path.
- If encoder output looks correct but YouTube’s preview is wrong, check ingestion and stream-health diagnostics.
- If only one viewer or a replay appears wrong, compare another playback device or player before altering the stream. Buffering, playback conditions, and delivery delay can differ from a true track mismatch.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health during the event: YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Check connection and ingestion health
If the cloud encoder exposes connection status or dropped-frame statistics, inspect them while the stream is running. In OBS, an increasing dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection indicator mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate, according to the OBS dropped-frames guidance.

- If connection evidence shows the upload path cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the bitrate or improve the connection, then retest.
- If the connection is stable and there are no relevant health warnings, do not lower bitrate as a generic lip-sync remedy.
- If the stream starts correctly but drifts later, capture when the drift begins and compare the same cue again at source, encoder, and YouTube. A growing offset calls for locating a time-dependent fault, not guessing a fixed delay.
YouTube notes that congestion and other factors can delay live streams even when a connection can sustain the average bitrate. Lower latency also means less read-ahead buffering for the player. These can affect delivery or buffering without proving that audio and video tracks are misaligned: YouTube latency guidance.
Check encoder settings and YouTube health messages
Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current requirements for the protocol and resolution you selected. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, with AAC or MP3 audio: YouTube encoder settings.

Use the specific stream-health warning rather than changing several settings together. YouTube’s diagnostics identify issues including unsupported audio codecs, incorrect sample rates, multiple audio streams, mismatched primary and backup settings, and video ingestion starvation: YouTube stream-health diagnostics.

- Read the health warning and identify the exact audio or video field it names.
- Check the encoder’s selected audio codec, sample rate, and number of audio streams against that warning.
- If a backup stream is configured and YouTube reports a mismatch, align its audio codec, bitrate, sample rate, and channel count with the primary; check video codec, frame rate, resolution, and bitrate as well.
- Change only the implicated setting, restart or retest the stream, and compare the cue at the same monitoring points.
Do not add an audio delay until you know whether audio leads or trails and where the offset is introduced. A delay adjustment may mask one symptom while making another point in the chain worse.

If the cloud playlist uses HLS, check its segments
Apply these checks only if the cloud service actually sends HLS. “Cloud playlist” may also mean a playlist managed inside an application or a different ingest method.
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance calls for TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations from one to four seconds; shorter segments reduce latency. It also specifies supported codecs and audio settings: YouTube HLS ingestion requirements.

It is also equipped with a convenient remote control for easy navigation of menu screens (ASIN: B0C9PZPFL8)
HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments. A playlist that arrives later but keeps audio and video aligned has a latency issue, not necessarily a synchronization failure. Check segment timing and the platform’s health messages before changing track timing.
Choose latency for the interaction you need
YouTube describes Normal latency for non-interactive streams, Low latency for limited interaction, and Ultra-low latency for real-time engagement. Its guidance describes Low latency as less than 10 seconds for most viewers and Ultra-low latency as less than 5 seconds for most viewers; those are viewer-latency descriptions, not acceptable audio/video offset limits. Ultra-low latency carries a higher chance of buffering. YouTube latency options.
