Atlas VTT display problems have different fixes depending on what is missing: update Atlas if the map canvas is black, import copied map images through Asset Manager, repair missing token-image references, or resend the scene if only the player view is blank. First make sure you are using desktop Obsidian 1.8.7 or newer; Atlas does not support Obsidian mobile apps. See the Atlas installation requirements.
Check which Atlas VTT display problem you have
Identify the symptom before changing settings. A black map in the GM editor, a newly copied map that never appears, a token without its picture, and an empty player window are separate issues with different documented remedies.

These are Atlas’s documented explanations and next steps, not a guaranteed diagnosis of every vault. The result can depend on the exact symptom, software versions, and location of the image file. This guide covers Atlas VTT, not the separate Obsidian Maps plugin.

The map stays black
Atlas’s troubleshooting FAQ identifies an outdated plugin as the first thing to check: older Atlas versions could show a black map after some imports. Update Atlas before changing graphics settings.

- In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins and check for Atlas updates.
- Update Atlas, then reopen or reload the affected map and check whether it renders.
- If the canvas remains black, enable hardware acceleration in Obsidian’s general settings and check that your graphics-card drivers are current.
Atlas recommends hardware acceleration and driver checks as the next steps if updating does not help; it does not guarantee either change will resolve every black-map case. For the current guidance, see Atlas FAQ and troubleshooting.
Map images I copied into the atlas-vtt folder do not show
Atlas says manually copying images into the atlas-vtt folder does not make the plugin pick them up. Use Atlas’s import workflow instead:

- Open the Atlas Asset Manager.
- Click
+, then choose Add Map. - Select the map image through Atlas to import it. Use the imported map to create a scene when needed.

Tokens show no image
A token is on the map, but its image is missing
If the image file referenced by a token was deleted from the vault, the token can remain while its picture is missing. Open the affected map, open Obsidian’s command palette, and run Clean up missing assets in current map. Review the listed references and remove the ones that no longer point to valid files. Atlas notes that those removals can be undone with Ctrl+Z on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Z on macOS.

An imported creature has no art
For a statblock import, the creature needs art linked in the note’s image field. If the image is remote, save it into the vault, link that local file in the note, and scan again. Atlas’s token instructions explain the creation and placement workflow at Put tokens on the map.
The token has not been created or placed yet
- Open a scene, then press
Ato open Asset Manager. - Choose Create Token and provide the token image files.
- Open the Characters tab and double-click the token, or choose Spawn on Map.
A scene must be open for a token to be spawned onto it. Starting from the dashboard without an open scene can make Spawn on Map appear to do nothing.

The player view is black or empty
A blank player window does not necessarily mean the map is missing from the GM editor. Atlas says the player view needs a scene to be sent to it; after an Obsidian restart, the connection may need to be restored.
- Open the scene you want to display.
- Click the eye control or run Send current map to player view from Obsidian’s command palette.
- If Obsidian was restarted, reopen the scene and send it again.

Confirm Atlas is supported and running
Atlas is an Obsidian Community plugin. The installation guide reviewed on October 4, 2026 specifies desktop Obsidian 1.8.7 or newer on Windows, macOS, or Linux; Atlas does not run on the mobile apps. Install or update it through Settings → Community plugins, and enable it there. If the dashboard does not open automatically, use Obsidian’s command palette to open it. Check the current details on Atlas’s install page, since version requirements and interface labels may change.
Atlas uses map and token images stored locally in the vault, so those assets can work offline. A missing local file reference is different from a rendering problem or a player-view connection problem.
If the documented fixes do not work
Use Atlas’s in-app Report an issue command or open Settings → Atlas VTT → Help and feedback. The plugin’s official listing says its report flow includes version information and sends the report to the Atlas team: Atlas VTT on Obsidian Community Plugins.

Include the Atlas and Obsidian versions, your operating system, the exact symptom, and whether the image file still exists in the vault. That information helps distinguish a black-rendering issue from a missing asset or a player-view state problem.
