Angular’s NG0919 means it detected a runtime circular dependency among components, directives, or pipes. Trace the imports until you find the path that returns to its starting point, then remove that runtime cycle—usually by extracting shared code, replacing a type-only import with import type, or restructuring the component hierarchy.

What NG0919 means

Angular describes NG0919 as a circular dependency between components, directives, or pipes. For example, Component A may import Component B while Component B imports Component A. The cycle can also pass through intermediate files: Component A → Component B → Component C → Component A. Because the dependency is circular, Angular may be unable to initialize the affected component correctly.

The runtime message documented by Angular begins NG0919: Cannot read @Component metadata. Older Angular versions may instead report Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'ɵcmp'). The wording can vary by version, so use the error code and the component or file references in the full message to guide your investigation. Angular’s NG0919 reference describes the error and its remedies.

How to find the circular import

  1. Read the complete error. Note any component metadata or file references it names.
  2. Trace runtime imports from the implicated files. Follow each component, directive, or pipe import through intermediate files and look for a path that leads back to the starting file.
  3. Check shared files in the chain. A cycle can be introduced indirectly when a shared module or barrel file imports one participant while another participant imports that shared file.
  4. For a large TypeScript source tree, scan with Madge. From the project root, run madge --circular --extensions ts ./src to list circular imports. To create a graph, run madge --circular --extensions ts ./src --image graph.svg. Use the output to locate the cycle; removing the problematic runtime dependency is still the fix.

Angular documents these Madge commands in its NG0919 troubleshooting guidance.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to break the cycle

Move shared functionality into a neutral file

If two components import each other because both need the same helper, constant, or other shared logic, move that code into a separate file that imports neither component. Have each component import the shared file directly. This removes the need for either component to depend on the other just to access common functionality.

Use a type-only import when the reference is only a type

If a file needs another component or class only to express a TypeScript type, use import type instead of a runtime import. Angular notes that type-only imports are erased at compile time and do not contribute to runtime circular dependencies. Do not use this change if the code needs the imported value at runtime.

Restructure the component hierarchy

If the components’ responsibilities or relationships require them to import each other at runtime, revise the design so the dependency has one direction. For example, move shared behavior out of the components or change which component owns the relevant functionality. The goal is a dependency path that does not return to its starting point.

Distinguish NG0919 from other Angular cycle errors

Error Where the cycle occurs What to investigate
NG0919 Runtime references among components, directives, or pipes. Trace the source import chain and remove the runtime cycle.
NG0200 Dependency injection: services directly or indirectly depend on themselves. Follow the service dependency path and refactor the service relationships.
NG3003 A separately classified compiler error called “Import Cycle Detected.” Investigate the compiler-reported import cycle; do not assume the runtime NG0919 repair path applies unchanged.

Angular’s NG0200 guide recommends restructuring service dependencies first. Events can replace direct dependencies where suitable; lazy injection is described as a last resort. Angular lists NG3003 separately in its error encyclopedia.

When injector tools are relevant

NG0919 calls for tracing source imports, not starting with injector visualization. Angular DevTools’ Injector Tree visualizes injector hierarchy and resolution paths, which can help when investigating dependency-injection behavior. Angular’s documentation says the Injector Tree is available for applications built with Angular 17 or higher; it is not the primary tool for finding an NG0919 component import cycle. See the Angular DevTools Injector Tree documentation.
