If an SSD freezes, disconnects, or disappears after a Windows update, protect your files first, then determine whether the problem is Windows-only or the drive is also missing before Windows loads. The timing does not prove the update caused the fault, and it does not prove the SSD has failed. Follow the checks below in order; use only driver or firmware instructions for your exact PC and SSD model.
1. Back up accessible files before troubleshooting
If the SSD is still readable, copy your most important files to a separate drive or trusted cloud backup before changing drivers, running repair operations, or updating firmware. Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before trying Windows Update troubleshooting steps: Windows Update troubleshooting.
If the SSD is the Windows boot drive and repeatedly vanishes, avoid optional benchmarks and repeated stress tests. If irreplaceable files are at risk and the drive is becoming harder to detect, seek professional data-recovery advice before attempting repairs. A backup destination can protect files; it will not repair the affected SSD.

2. Record what is failing and when
Before changing anything, note the details that can distinguish an update problem from a device or connection problem:

- Your Windows version and build, plus the update date or KB number if known.
- The SSD make, model, interface if known, and whether it is the boot drive or a secondary drive.
- Whether the SSD disappears only in Windows, appears in Device Manager, or is also missing from the computer’s firmware setup.
- Any stop code, storage-health warning, Event Viewer error, or result from the manufacturer’s diagnostic tool.
- Whether the problem began immediately after the update or was already happening intermittently.
Update timing alone does not identify the cause. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts and stop codes can result from hardware, drivers, or software: Microsoft’s stop-code guidance.
3. Check Windows storage health and Device Manager
Look for a supported Windows storage warning
In supported Windows versions, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes, select the affected disk, then open Properties. Microsoft lists warnings for spare capacity below the manufacturer’s threshold, degraded reliability due to significant media errors or an internal NVM subsystem error, and a read-only state. The page may also show estimated remaining life, available spare, and temperature.

This built-in monitoring applies to NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or hard drives. Therefore, no Windows warning does not establish that every type of SSD is healthy. If Windows shows a critical warning, take it seriously, preserve accessible files, and contact the computer or SSD manufacturer for support: Microsoft’s critical storage warning guidance.
Check whether Windows marks a device or controller
Open Device Manager and look for a warning symbol on the SSD, storage controller, or another relevant device. If the PC is repeatedly restarting with a stop code, Microsoft suggests trying Safe Mode and checking for marked devices. Follow the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s advice before changing a storage-controller driver; do not switch controller modes or install a generic driver without knowing the system configuration.

- FITS M.2 NVMe AND SATA: Works with both M.2 PCIe NVMe and M.2 SATA SSDs in 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths. Bare drives only, no room for a drive with a pre-installed heatsink. It does NOT take 2.5in SATA drives or mSATA.
- 10GBPS USB 3.2 TYPE-C: Up to 10Gbps, and up to 1000MB/s in real transfers. Backward compatible with USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 at their own speed limits. Bus powered, no drivers and no external power supply.
- SLIM ALUMINUM BUILD: Ultra-slim aluminum case with an ABS frame, with a thermal pad to move heat off the drive. Light enough to live in a laptop bag, solid enough to survive it.
- IN THE BOX: Enclosure, 8in Type-C to Type-C cable and user manual. Works with Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.5 or later and Linux. Register on the manufacturer's website for extended warranty service.
Microsoft says a suspect driver may be updated and, if that does not help, the device considered for disabling or uninstalling. Treat that advice cautiously for a storage controller: changing it can affect access to the Windows drive, so use vendor-specific guidance or get support rather than experimenting.
4. Check whether the SSD is missing outside Windows
Restart and check the computer’s firmware setup (often called BIOS or UEFI; use the PC maker’s instructions for entering it). If the SSD is visible there but disappears only after Windows starts, Windows, a driver, or software may be involved. If it is absent from firmware setup too, a Windows repair reinstall is unlikely to address the detection problem; ask the computer maker or SSD maker to help check the device and its connection. These observations narrow the possibilities but do not, by themselves, prove a single cause.

5. Use the exact manufacturer’s diagnostic and firmware guidance
Identify the SSD’s brand and model, then use that manufacturer’s official support instructions or utility. Utilities and firmware are not interchangeable across brands or models. For example, Samsung says its Magician tools provide health and firmware features for Samsung SSDs. Its support page lists notices for specific 990 PRO firmware releases, including a September 2025 notice concerning intermittent non-recognition and blue-screen issues and a December 2025 notice concerning read-operation stability. Those model-specific notices are not general fixes for other SSDs: Samsung Consumer Storage Support Tools.
Back up before firmware work and follow the instructions for the exact model. If Windows cannot see the SSD, the maker’s utility may not see it either; an empty utility listing alone is not a definitive failure diagnosis. Share the model, symptoms, and any diagnostic results with the SSD or computer manufacturer.

6. Try Windows repair only when the drive remains accessible
If the SSD stays accessible and the checks do not indicate drive failure, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for suitable update troubleshooting, driver checks, restart, and system-file repair options. Preserve files before repair operations: Windows Update troubleshooting.
Repair reinstall in Windows 11
On eligible Windows 11 systems, open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may be unavailable on older Windows versions or on work- or school-managed devices. It is not a substitute for protecting files on a drive that is disappearing: Microsoft’s repair reinstall instructions.
Do not replace the SSD or reinstall Windows solely because the trouble began after an update. Consider replacement when diagnostics or manufacturer support indicate drive failure, and confirm the computer’s requirements for capacity, interface (SATA or NVMe), physical form factor, and platform compatibility.
7. Check one narrow backup-software issue from April 2026
If the SSD itself is detected but a backup application cannot mount or browse a disk-image backup, the issue may involve a blocked third-party driver rather than an SSD disconnect. Microsoft says Windows updates released on or after April 14, 2026 may block vulnerable versions of psmounterex.sys when vulnerable-driver blocklist enforcement is enabled. In this specific situation, backup creation may still work while some image mount or restore operations fail.
To check for the reported block, open Event Viewer and go to Applications and Service Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational; Microsoft says Event ID 3077 can identify a blocked driver. Update the affected backup software or contact its vendor. This is a narrow backup-image issue, not evidence that Windows updates generally cause SSDs to go offline: Microsoft’s April 2026 driver-block notice.
