The fix depends on where the drive disappears. If it is missing from BIOS/UEFI, check the module, compatible slot, and platform before changing Windows or Linux settings. If BIOS sees it but Windows Setup does not, an Intel VMD/RST driver may be needed. If an Optane Memory module was previously paired for acceleration, its old volume state may need to be reset. For Ubuntu, RST can prevent the installer from accessing disks, but changing RST or AHCI settings can disrupt an existing Windows installation or RAID volume.

First identify the Optane device and where it disappears

“Optane drive” can mean three different things: a standalone Optane SSD, an Optane Memory M Series cache module, or an H Series module that combines Optane and QLC NAND media. Their setup and recovery steps are not interchangeable. Start by noting the full PC or motherboard model, BIOS version, Optane model, the exact screen where it is missing, whether this is a fresh OS installation or an existing system, whether acceleration was previously enabled, and whether there is RAID or data to preserve.

What you have or see Most relevant troubleshooting path
Standalone Optane SSD; visible in BIOS but absent from Windows Setup Check whether the M.2/PCIe port uses Intel VMD. If it does, Windows Setup may need the PC or motherboard maker’s Intel RST driver.
M Series Optane Memory; missing after reinstalling Windows or moving the module Check BIOS detection and whether acceleration was disabled before the reinstall or move. Recovery options are model- and platform-specific.
H Series Optane Memory; absent from Windows Check the BIOS Intel RST page for a volume that needs Reset to non-Optane or Deconcatenate.
Disk missing from an Ubuntu 24.04 installer Check whether RST groups the disk and consult the PC maker’s instructions before changing firmware storage settings.

BIOS menus, slot compatibility, and shared M.2/SATA lanes vary by system. Use the PC or motherboard manual for the exact model and BIOS version rather than assuming a setting name or location is universal.

If the Optane device is missing from BIOS/UEFI

An operating-system driver cannot make a device appear in firmware. Check the hardware and platform path first:

  1. Shut the system down and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions to check that the module is fully seated.
  2. Confirm that the specific Optane model is supported in that system and installed in a compatible M.2/PCIe connector. Check the manual for connectors or SATA ports that share lanes; another occupied slot or port can affect availability.
  3. Check the PC or motherboard maker’s recommended BIOS version and model-specific Optane configuration. Menu names and the correct remapping settings depend on the platform and Optane family.
  4. For an M Series module, look in the firmware’s Peripherals or Intel Rapid Storage Technology area. Intel says it may be listed as INTEL MEMPEK and should be visible in BIOS even before Optane Memory is enabled.

Do not toggle remapping settings at random. Intel’s guidance differs by family: its cited M Series configuration calls for remapping enabled, while H Series requires remapping disabled. Intel also identifies UEFI as necessary for Optane Memory support in the relevant error guidance. Check the system maker’s instructions for the exact setting and boot configuration.

If the device remains absent after verifying compatibility, the connector, lane-sharing conflicts, and the vendor’s firmware guidance, hardware damage is one possibility—not a diagnosis that can be made from absence alone.

If BIOS sees the drive but Windows Setup does not

Check whether the SSD is connected to a port managed by Intel VMD. Intel’s guidance for an Optane SSD on a VMD-enabled port is to load the latest Intel RST driver provided by the PC or motherboard manufacturer. In Windows Setup, choose Load driver, then browse to the extracted, model-appropriate driver package. Select the VMD/RST controller driver supplied for that exact system.

If VMD is not enabled for the port, Intel says an additional driver should not be required for the drive to appear during OS installation. If Setup still cannot see it, recheck the port assignment and the system maker’s installation instructions instead of trying unrelated driver packages.

The Intel support case naming the Optane SSD 900P is specifically about that model, but the VMD-enabled-port condition is the important diagnostic point. Do not infer from it that every Optane SSD needs an RST driver or that a replacement drive is the first fix.

If Windows does not see an Optane Memory module

A module that was previously used for acceleration may remain hidden after an OS reinstall or a computer move if acceleration was not disabled first. Before resetting or erasing anything, back up data and follow the system maker’s procedure for the exact module and BIOS.

H Series: check for an old Optane volume

For H Series devices, Intel identifies old data or a volume that was not properly disabled as possible causes. In the BIOS Intel RST page, select the module and use Reset to non-Optane or Deconcatenate if the prior volume remains enabled. H Series can expose its Optane and QLC media as two PCIe x2 storage devices on supported system BIOS.

Intel lists DiskPart clean all as a further partition-removal step if a reset does not resolve the issue. This is destructive: it erases the selected disk. Treat it only as a last resort after confirming the correct disk number, ensuring required data is backed up, and following the device and system maker’s instructions.

M Series: use only model-specific recovery steps

Intel’s M Series guidance also describes secure erase or Reset to non-Optane as possible recovery options when a previously enabled module remains hidden after an OS reinstall or computer swap. These operations can affect data and are not universal steps. Confirm the module, firmware menu, and procedure with the PC or motherboard maker before proceeding.

If a Linux installer cannot see the disk

Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 documentation says its installer may not access disks grouped under Intel RST. Its documented remedies involve changing the firmware RST configuration or using AHCI, but the exact setting names and migration steps depend on the PC maker. That Ubuntu guidance should not be assumed to describe every Linux distribution or release.

Do not switch from RST to AHCI as a casual test on a working Windows/RAID system. Ubuntu warns that Windows may stop booting after an RST configuration change and that breaking RAID can make data inaccessible. If you need to preserve an existing OS or RAID volume, use the system maker’s instructions for a planned controller transition before changing firmware settings.

Why changing RST, VMD, or AHCI can make things worse

RST, VMD, and AHCI affect how the operating system accesses storage. Changing controller mode can leave an installed OS unable to boot; disabling VMD or changing SATA mode can also affect active Optane or RAID volumes. Intel’s RST-removal guidance calls for backing up and disabling active Optane or RAID volumes before changing from RST Premium to AHCI or disabling VMD, and warns that the OS may no longer boot and could require reinstallation.

  • Back up important files before changing controller or volume settings.
  • Do not break or reset an active RAID or Optane volume unless you understand the effect on its data.
  • Follow the current PC or motherboard maker’s migration steps for the exact model; BIOS labels and procedures vary.
  • If you only need Windows Setup to see a VMD-managed SSD, try the correct OEM RST driver before changing firmware storage mode.

Use the symptom to choose the next step

  • Missing in BIOS: investigate compatibility, seating, connector and lane conflicts, and vendor firmware guidance. OS drivers are not the remedy for firmware-level absence.
  • Present in BIOS, missing in Windows Setup: check VMD on the specific port and load the system maker’s RST driver if VMD is enabled.
  • Previously accelerated Optane Memory missing in Windows: check for an old pairing or volume state; use model-specific reset steps only after protecting data.
  • Missing from Ubuntu 24.04 Setup: check whether RST groups the disk, then evaluate the vendor-documented firmware path with the risks to Windows and RAID in mind.
