If an OBS playlist stops advancing during an Indian music livestream, first check that you are using VLC Video Source, then distinguish between a list that stops at the end, a source that restarts after a scene change, and shuffle that repeats its order. Those symptoms involve different settings: Loop Playlist, source visibility behavior, and Shuffle Playlist. OBS does not use a separate playlist mechanism for Indian music.
Identify what “not advancing” means
Before changing settings, note when playback goes wrong. Does it stop after the final song, restart when you switch scenes, or play the same order each time? Change only the control that matches the symptom, then test again.
- Stops after the final item: check whether Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Restarts or begins again after a scene change: check what the source does when it becomes invisible.
- Plays in the same order: check Shuffle Playlist and, if the scene is revisited, consider the version-specific reports below.
- One item is missing or fails: test that file in VLC and inspect its playlist path.
Confirm OBS has the right playlist source
Use VLC Video Source for a list of songs
OBS’s VLC Video Source supports a playlist. The built-in Media Source is intended for an individual media file, not a multi-item playlist. VLC must be installed for VLC Video Source to appear in OBS.

- In OBS, add or select a VLC Video Source for the scene containing the music.
- Open that source’s properties and check that the expected playlist items are listed.
- If an entry is missing or does not play, open the media file in VLC and correct its path or replace the file before troubleshooting playlist order.
Match VLC’s architecture to OBS
If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, states: “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” This is a compatibility requirement; it does not establish that an architecture mismatch is the cause of every playlist problem.

Set loop and shuffle for the behavior you want
In the VLC Video Source properties, check these controls separately. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default.

Looping and shuffling solve different problems. Enabling shuffle will not make a playlist restart after its last item; enabling loop will not randomize its order. If the list stops at the end, test Loop Playlist first. If it plays in order, test Shuffle Playlist.
Check what happens when a scene hides the source
OBS’s documented default is to stop a source when it becomes invisible and restart it when visible again. If a scene change hides the VLC Video Source, that behavior can make playback appear to start over instead of continuing from its previous point.
- Open the VLC Video Source properties.
- Find the setting for behavior when the source is not visible.
- Choose the behavior that fits the stream: stop when not visible and restart when visible, pause when not visible and resume when visible, or always play even when not visible.
- Switch away from the scene and back once to test whether playback now behaves as intended.
Use pause/resume if the music should hold its place while the scene is hidden. Use always play if audio should continue through other scenes. Stop/restart is appropriate only if restarting the source is what you want.

Troubleshoot shuffle that repeats after a scene change
Know what has—and has not—been reported
Reports describe shuffle-related behavior when a scene is revisited, but they are tied to specific older configurations, not proof of a universal problem. OBS issue #11506, filed November 11, 2024, reports OBS 30.2.0 on Windows 10: the current song restarted when the scene was revisited with shuffle selected. Issue #3597, filed October 11, 2020, reports OBS 26.0.2 on Windows 10 Pro 1909 and is marked closed; the issue page does not state a resolution. These reports do not establish that all current OBS versions have the same behavior.
Optional community workaround
A November 23, 2020 OBS forum reply suggests adding the Directory Watch Media plugin as a filter to the VLC Video Source and assigning a Refresh hotkey. The reply says Refresh re-saves the source properties and reshuffles when Shuffle Playlist is enabled. This is community advice, not an official fix or a guarantee; check that the plugin supports your installed OBS version and operating system before relying on it.

When network caching is relevant
The VLC Video Source includes a Network caching control, documented with a default of 400 ms. Consider it only if your playlist uses network-hosted media or playback buffers. OBS documentation does not establish that changing caching fixes advancement for local playlist files, and it does not identify a particular alternative value as a fix.

- Write down the exact symptom and when it occurs.
- Verify VLC Video Source, installed VLC, architecture compatibility, and playlist entries.
- Change only the relevant setting: Loop Playlist for end-of-list stops, visibility behavior for scene changes, or Shuffle Playlist for ordering.
- Test the same sequence again, including the scene change if that triggered the problem.
- If only shuffle on scene revisit remains, consult the version-specific issue reports and consider the optional plugin workaround only after checking compatibility.
