First check where the picture disappears: OBS preview, YouTube’s player, or just one source in an otherwise visible scene. If the OBS preview is black, troubleshoot the scene and the source before changing bitrate. If the preview looks normal but viewers see a black or frozen player, check OBS’s rendering, encoding, and connection indicators. This comparison narrows the search; it does not prove the cause by itself.

Locate where the picture goes black

Compare the OBS preview with the actual YouTube player, preferably from another device or a trusted viewer. Note whether the problem affects the whole scene, one source, or only the viewer’s playback.

  • OBS preview is black: Start with the selected scene, source visibility and layering, then follow the steps for that source type.
  • Only one source is black: The rest of the scene is rendering, so check that source’s content, input, playback, or capture settings.
  • Preview is normal but YouTube is black or frozen: Check OBS’s rendering and encoding status and its connection to the ingest server. A preview/player mismatch is a useful clue, not a definitive diagnosis.
  • Viewers report buffering or loading: Treat that separately from a black source in OBS. Playback can vary with a viewer’s device, location, and network, even when OBS does not report dropped frames.

Check scene selection, visibility, and layering

  1. Select the scene intended for the live stream. Confirm that you are inspecting the scene actually being sent, rather than another scene in the collection.
  2. Check the picture source’s eye icon in Sources. The source must be visible. OBS’s Sources guide explains that sources higher in the list appear above lower sources, so an opaque image, color, browser, or other source can cover the picture.
  3. Temporarily hide sources above the expected picture, one at a time. If the picture returns, you have identified a covering source. Restore the others after checking so you do not leave an unrelated overlay disabled.
  4. Select the picture source and inspect its bounding box, position, and size. Make sure it is not positioned off the canvas or reduced so far that it is effectively invisible. Check its transform if the box does not match the visible area you expect.

OBS documents source visibility and stacking behavior in its Sources Guide. Interface wording can vary across versions, but the eye icon and ordering of sources are the important checks.

Fix the source that is actually black

Game Capture

Game Capture is a Windows-only source in OBS. Confirm that it targets the intended game or window and uses a compatible capture mode. Some games may require OBS to run as administrator; some fullscreen games stop rendering to the capture when alt-tabbed. A conflict with another capture method can also matter. If Game Capture remains blank, try Window Capture when suitable, or a supported screen-capture source instead.

On a system with multiple GPUs, OBS and the game may need to use the same high-performance GPU. On macOS or Linux, do not look for a Windows-only Game Capture fix; use a supported window or screen capture source for that platform. See OBS’s Game Capture Guide and Game Capture Issues.

Media Source or VLC playlist

For a video-based 24/7 scene, first verify that the media file or playlist is still available and plays. Then check what the source does when playback ends or becomes inactive, and whether looping is configured for the behavior you want.

  • Media Source: Check its Loop setting if a single file should repeat. OBS documentation says Loop is off by default, but your actual configuration and OBS version may differ.
  • VLC Video: Check Loop Playlist if the playlist should repeat. OBS documentation says this is on by default, but confirm the setting rather than relying on a default.

OBS’s Media Sources guide describes these controls. A file reaching its end or a source becoming inactive can explain a picture that disappears later in a long-running stream; it is not necessarily a bitrate problem.

Browser Source

Check that the page and its external dependencies still load, and try reloading the source. This is a practical check, not a guaranteed black-screen remedy. Browser sources can also add rendering workload, so if the whole output becomes stale or choppy under load, consider simplifying resource-heavy pages or effects.

Camera or capture card

Confirm that the camera or capture device is powered, the intended input is selected, and the device is providing a signal. If another application may be using it, close that application and check again. OBS describes video capture sources as inputs for webcams, capture cards, and other devices in its Sources Guide.

Before replacing hardware, try another cable, input, or known-good device if available. Consider a replacement only when those checks point to a failing or inadequate input device.

Display or Window Capture

Confirm that the source targets the display or window you intend to show and that the target is open. Check that the selected source type is supported on your operating system and that any platform permissions required for capture are in place. The exact permission steps depend on the platform; do not assume a Windows capture fix applies elsewhere.

Separate a scene or source fault from performance trouble

OBS uses GPU time to composite and render scenes. If the entire output becomes stale, choppy, or blank under load, check OBS for rendering lag or encoding overload. A performance warning makes workload worth investigating, but it does not by itself prove why a particular source is black.

  • Close or reduce competing GPU-intensive work.
  • Simplify complex scenes, filters, and resource-heavy browser sources.
  • If the system still cannot keep up, consider reducing output resolution or frame rate.

OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting explains that scene sources consume resources and that a system can run out of capacity. Diagnose this branch when the evidence points to rendering or encoding strain, rather than changing output settings just because one source is black.

Check the connection only when the symptoms point to delivery

A black source in the OBS preview is not, by itself, a reason to lower bitrate. If the preview looks right but OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections, investigate the connection separately. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Network issues are typically outside OBS’s control.

  1. Check OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators. Use them to distinguish a delivery problem from a source that is already black in the preview.
  2. Compare configured bitrate with stable upload capacity. If the connection cannot sustain it, reducing bitrate may help.
  3. Try a wired connection where possible. OBS lists wired networking as a troubleshooting step.
  4. Check whether a VPN or security software is interfering, and review network drivers. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether the connection behavior changes.
  5. Use dynamic bitrate only as a workaround. It can lower quality as conditions change; it does not fix the underlying connection problem.

See OBS’s Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues. If viewers report buffering while OBS shows no dropped frames, their playback conditions may differ; do not confuse that report with a source visibly black in the OBS preview.

Use this quick symptom-to-check guide

What you see First check What not to assume
OBS preview and YouTube are black Scene selection, eye icon, source order, position and size; then the affected source type That bitrate is the cause
One source is black, other sources are visible Capture target, media playback or loop, or device input signal That the whole stream is disconnected
OBS preview is normal, but YouTube is black or frozen OBS rendering/encoding indicators and connection status That one comparison conclusively identifies the fault
Picture degrades or disappears after playback runs for a while Whether a media file ended, a game stopped rendering, or a device lost signal That new hardware is needed before checking the source
OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections Stable upload, network path, VPN/security interference, drivers, and wired connectivity That changing scene sources will repair an unstable connection

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 stream is a loop of uploaded videos rather than a live camera or game capture, StreamNeo can keep it running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
