If one video should repeat, open its OBS Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For a playlist, use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. These are separate controls from restarting playback when a source becomes active, so changing the restart setting alone will not make a clip repeat at the end.
First identify the source type
OBS handles a single local file and a playlist differently. Check the source name in the scene’s Sources list, then use the matching fix:

OBS’s Media Source documentation lists common supported media types including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. If your file is not playing as expected, confirm that the chosen source points to the intended local file or playlist before investigating other causes. OBS Media Sources documentation.

- In the scene’s Sources list, select the Media Source that contains the clip. Open its properties.
- Check the file path and make sure it points to the video you want in the 24/7 stream.
- Turn on Loop, then apply the change. OBS describes this option as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed; its documented default is Off. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Decide separately whether to restart on activation. Restart playback when source becomes active controls whether the file restarts when the source is in the current scene and visible. OBS documents this option as On by default. It does not replace Loop: use Loop for repeating at the end of the clip, and set the activation behavior according to what you want when the source becomes visible again. Loop a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says you need 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Add or select a VLC Video source and set up the files as a playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties. OBS documents this as restarting the source after it has run out of media files; its documented default is On. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Choose what the source does when it is not visible. VLC Video has visibility behavior choices that can let playback continue, pause or stop when the source is hidden. Select the behavior that matches how your scenes are arranged.
Check scenes and visibility if looping works only sometimes
A source belongs to a scene and can be hidden or shown. In the Sources list, the eye icon controls whether a source is visible. If playback stops or changes only when you switch scenes, check which scene contains the source, whether it is hidden, and what the VLC Video source is set to do while not visible. A scene or visibility change is a separate issue from reaching the end of a file. See the OBS Sources Guide.

- One file ends and stays ended: confirm Loop is on for that Media Source.
- A playlist ends after its last item: confirm Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- Playback restarts after a scene change: review Restart playback when source becomes active for a Media Source, or the VLC source’s visibility behavior.
- The VLC Video source is missing: check that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS.
When these settings do not solve it
The documented controls explain repeat behavior and source visibility, but they cannot identify a specific fault without details about your setup. Before changing codecs or rebuilding the stream, note your OBS version, operating system, source type, file format and the exact steps that reproduce the problem. Those details help distinguish a looping or scene-visibility issue from a file or platform problem.
Kids’ stream considerations
Looping a file in OBS only controls playback. It does not establish that you have permission to use the video or music, that a platform will approve the content, or that a stream will remain online without interruption. Check the applicable platform rules and rights for every item in your playlist; the playback settings themselves do not resolve copyright or child-safety questions.
