If Google is choosing the HTTP version of your WordPress homepage as canonical, first confirm whether your live setup still sends conflicting signals or Google has not yet recrawled a corrected site. Pick one HTTPS homepage address—such as https://example.com/ or https://www.example.com/—then align your certificate, redirects, WordPress URLs, canonical tag, internal links, and sitemap to it. Use Search Console’s URL Inspection to check Google’s choice after the changes.
What an HTTP-to-HTTPS canonical issue means
Google canonicalization is its process for selecting a representative URL from duplicate or very similar pages. Your homepage can have several variants: HTTP and HTTPS, and often www and non-www. WordPress may declare one address as canonical, but that declaration does not force Google to use it. Google weighs multiple signals, including redirects, rel="canonical" annotations, and sitemap entries; redirects and canonical annotations are stronger signals than sitemap inclusion. See Google’s canonicalization guidance.
Google generally prefers an HTTPS page over its equivalent HTTP page. That preference can be undermined by conflicting implementation signals, including an invalid certificate, insecure page dependencies other than images, a redirect to or through HTTP, or a canonical link that points to HTTP. Google’s examples and HTTPS guidance are at HTTPS.
1. Confirm which URL Google selected
- Open Google Search Console and select the property that covers the homepage you want to inspect.
- Use URL Inspection to inspect the homepage URL, including its protocol and hostname.
- Compare the user-declared canonical with the Google-selected canonical in the inspection results. If you inspect an HTTP URL, also inspect the intended HTTPS destination; they are distinct variants.
Check that you are inspecting the correct URL and property. Google notes that a canonical in a property you do not own cannot be inspected for its duplicate-page traffic. Its troubleshooting guidance is at Troubleshooting canonicalization issues.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Choose one preferred homepage address
Decide whether the canonical homepage should be https://example.com/ or https://www.example.com/. Neither hostname form is inherently required; choose based on your existing configuration, backlinks and recognition, certificate coverage, and which option lets you keep redirects and links consistent. Then make every other protocol or hostname variant reach that destination.
For a permanent consolidation, use a permanent redirect. Google says permanent redirect methods have the same effect on Search, although the time for search engines to notice can vary; server-side redirects are the quickest. Avoid chains and routes that pass through HTTP on the way to the HTTPS destination. See Google’s redirect guidance.

3. Check the HTTPS certificate and redirect chain
- Open the exact preferred HTTPS URL and confirm that it loads with a valid certificate covering the complete hostname. A wildcard certificate is suitable when it covers that hostname.
- Test the HTTP homepage and the alternate www or non-www hostname. Each should reach the preferred HTTPS URL directly, without an HTTPS-to-HTTP hop or an intermediate HTTP destination.
- If the HTTPS page is inaccessible, its certificate is invalid, or redirects loop, fix that underlying TLS or hosting problem before asking Google to reassess the canonical.
Google lists invalid certificates and redirects to or through HTTP among issues that can conflict with its HTTPS preference. HSTS does not override those strong conflicting signals. See Google’s HTTPS guidance.
4. Align WordPress URLs and the rendered canonical tag
Check the WordPress address settings
In WordPress, open Settings > General and review WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL). Set them to the intended HTTPS hostname, where appropriate for your installation. Hosting architecture, plugins, and proxy or CDN configuration can affect how these values should be set, so do not change them blindly if your site has a custom setup.

Inspect the homepage’s canonical output
View the rendered homepage source or use your browser’s developer tools to find the <link rel="canonical"> element. It should point to the one selected HTTPS homepage address—not the HTTP version, the other hostname variant, or an unrelated URL. Check that there is one correct canonical rather than conflicting output from a theme, SEO plugin, or other component.
Google identifies incorrect CMS-generated canonical elements as a common source of trouble. WordPress core includes redirect_canonical() to determine when a requested URL should redirect to a canonical URL, but that function alone does not guarantee that the host, plugins, theme output, and site settings agree. See WordPress’s redirect_canonical() reference and Google’s canonical troubleshooting guidance.

5. Make supporting signals consistent
- Update internal links to use the preferred HTTPS hostname.
- Ensure the XML sitemap lists the preferred HTTPS URLs, not HTTP versions.
- If you use
hreflangannotations, use the HTTPS URLs for the relevant language or regional pages. - Confirm the preferred destination is crawlable and returns the intended homepage.
A sitemap is a weaker canonical signal than redirects or a rel="canonical" annotation, but consistent supporting signals help Google interpret the site. Google’s canonicalization documentation explains how it weighs canonical signals.
6. Check for unexpected redirects or injected code
If the homepage redirects unexpectedly, or its canonical points to an unrelated or suspicious domain, investigate both configuration errors and possible compromise. Google documents malicious injections that add redirects or cross-domain canonical links. Review server and WordPress behavior, including relevant plugins and theme output, and follow Google’s canonicalization troubleshooting guidance.

7. Ask Google to recrawl and verify the result
After fixing the technical signals, inspect the preferred HTTPS homepage in Search Console again. If appropriate, use URL Inspection’s request indexing feature for the important homepage. Then allow Google to recrawl and reevaluate the duplicate URL cluster: Google says canonical reevaluation can take up to two weeks, and the selected canonical may not change immediately after a fix. Check the Google-selected canonical again later rather than treating the user-declared value as proof that Google has switched.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- The preferred HTTPS homepage loads with a valid certificate for its exact hostname.
- HTTP and alternate www/non-www versions redirect to that HTTPS destination without an HTTP detour.
- The rendered homepage has one canonical link pointing to the preferred HTTPS URL.
- WordPress URL settings, internal links, sitemap entries, and relevant localization annotations agree on HTTPS and the chosen hostname.
- Search Console URL Inspection shows the intended Google-selected canonical after Google has recrawled the pages.
