If your YouTube livestream has audio but no picture, first confirm FFmpeg is receiving video. Then check the output’s -map options and make sure -vn is not disabling video. If a local output has video but YouTube’s preview does not, investigate the encoder settings, destination, and Live Control Room health messages.
There is no command or log here to identify one confirmed cause, so work through the checks below in order. They isolate whether the problem starts at the source, in FFmpeg, or at YouTube ingestion.
1. Confirm the input actually contains video
Read the input section in FFmpeg’s console output. It should list a video stream as well as the audio stream. If FFmpeg detects only audio, changing YouTube output settings will not create a picture; check the input URL, selected source, camera, or capture-device configuration instead.
Where possible, inspect the source independently or make a short local recording and play it back. YouTube also recommends checking the audio and video directly in the encoder and looking for problems in a local archive: YouTube livestream troubleshooting and setting up a live stream.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
2. Check which streams FFmpeg sends
Review every -map option that applies to the output. FFmpeg normally selects suitable streams automatically; once you specify manual mapping, only the selected streams are included for that output. For example, -map 0:a selects audio and can produce an audio-only livestream. The -vn option explicitly disables video.
Do not blindly add -map 0:v:0: the correct input index depends on your source, and a filtergraph may create the video rather than pass through an input video stream. Confirm the input stream layout first, then select the intended video stream. If a complex filtergraph creates video, check that its labeled output is mapped to the streaming output exactly once.
See the FFmpeg stream selection documentation for the behavior of automatic selection, manual -map, and -vn.

3. Verify video encoding and YouTube ingest settings
If the source and FFmpeg mapping both include video, check the outgoing video codec and stream settings against YouTube’s encoder guidance. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds—not more than every 4 seconds. It also recommends square pixels and progressive scan in its advanced settings.
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that every codec is available in your FFmpeg build or for every ingest mode. Available encoders depend on how FFmpeg was compiled, and YouTube distinguishes settings by protocol and ingest mode. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the protocol you are using, then read any specific error or health message in Live Control Room. YouTube’s live encoder error guidance covers issues such as unsupported codec combinations and incorrect video settings.
4. Compare FFmpeg’s output with YouTube’s preview
Use a private or unlisted test stream if you do not want to troubleshoot on a public event. Check whether a local recording or preview of FFmpeg’s output contains video, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.

- 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
- No video in the local output: Return to the input, stream mapping, filtergraph, and encoder checks. YouTube cannot display video that FFmpeg did not send.
- Video locally, but not in YouTube’s preview: Focus on output muxing and protocol, codec and ingest settings, the active destination, and Live Control Room health warnings.
- Video appears in the YouTube preview: The ingest path is receiving picture. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live, as YouTube advises, and continue to monitor stream health during the event.
YouTube’s setup steps explain how to connect an encoder and wait for the preview: set up a live stream. Its streaming tips also recommend monitoring stream health.

5. Check encoder load and outbound connection
If the FFmpeg output itself is inconsistent, look at encoder errors and CPU load while streaming. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version, checking the picture and sound in the encoder, and reviewing dashboard errors and a local archive. If those checks look healthy but delivery remains unreliable, test the outbound internet connection; YouTube suggests contacting your ISP if that test shows a problem.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom. That is a planning recommendation, not proof that limited bandwidth is the cause of a black picture. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and network tips for live streaming.

6. Confirm the YouTube destination and stream key
Compare the destination server URL and stream key configured in FFmpeg with the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room. A key for another event or an incorrect destination can send the encoder to the wrong stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion; follow its current encoder setup instructions for the correct server and key fields.
Keep the stream key private. If you share logs for help, redact the key and any other credentials. YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions cover entering the encoder details.

Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | Likely diagnostic area | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg input lists audio but no video | Source or input selection | Inspect the source independently; check the input URL or capture configuration. |
| Input lists video, but local output has no picture | Mapping, -vn, filtergraph, or video encoding |
Review output-specific -map options, video suppression, filter outputs, and encoder errors. |
| Local output has picture, YouTube preview does not | Ingest, muxing, protocol, or destination configuration | Check YouTube’s health messages, current encoder settings, and the active server URL and key. |
| Preview appears, then picture becomes unreliable | Encoder health or outbound connection | Inspect FFmpeg errors and CPU load, test outbound capacity, and monitor Live Control Room health. |
What to include when asking for help
If the problem persists, share enough detail to identify where video disappears, without exposing credentials:
- Your full FFmpeg command with the stream key and other secrets redacted.
- The input stream listing from FFmpeg and the relevant output log lines.
- Your FFmpeg version and the video codec and protocol you are using.
- Whether video appears in a local output and in the Live Control Room preview.
- Any exact Live Control Room health or error message, plus CPU or network warnings.
