First determine where the timing problem begins: compare FFmpeg’s local output with YouTube Live’s preview and stream-health messages. If the local output is already out of sync, investigate the playlist files, their duration metadata, and timestamp handling. If the local output is synchronized but YouTube playback is not, check ingest health and your outbound connection. YouTube’s encoder settings can prevent stream-quality problems, but they do not by themselves fix a playlist timeline built from incorrect file durations.
Identify what is drifting
“Out of sync” can describe different problems, and each points to a different cause. Note when the problem first appears and whether it recurs at the same item or loop boundary.
- Items start progressively later: the playlist timeline may be accumulating error, often because a file’s reported duration does not match its actual duration.
- A jump, gap, or repeated moment at a transition: inspect the files on either side of that transition for different stream layouts, durations, or timestamp characteristics.
- Audio gradually separates from the picture: compare audio and video timing in the local output, especially around transitions.
- The live viewer sees a delay, but the playlist remains synchronized: this may be stream latency rather than schedule drift. YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture and viewing; delay alone does not show that FFmpeg’s playlist clock is drifting.
Without the command, input metadata, and a local output comparison, there is no reliable way to name one root cause.

If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, start with the files themselves. The demuxer reads them sequentially as though their packets had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps globally: the first file begins at zero, and each following file is placed according to the previous file’s duration. FFmpeg warns that an incorrect duration can cause artifacts. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Compare every input
Inspect the number and type of streams, codecs, time bases, frame rates, audio sample rates, start timestamps, and reported durations. The concat demuxer requires compatible inputs with the same streams, codecs, and time base. A playlist that mixes files with different stream layouts—for example, an item without audio among items with audio—can cause failures or timing artifacts at transitions.
Check reported duration against the actual media, particularly for files that are truncated or whose duration was calculated from bitrate. If the stored duration is known to be wrong and the actual duration is established, FFmpeg’s concat list supports a duration directive to override it. Do not guess: an inaccurate override can move the next item to the wrong position too.

Normalize incompatible media
When files do not meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements, prepare them to a consistent stream layout and timing format before concatenating. There is no universal conversion command that safely covers every combination of source codecs, frame rates, time bases, and missing streams. Choose the conversion based on the actual inputs, then inspect and test the resulting playlist locally.
Use pacing and timestamp options for the right problem
Keep real-time pacing separate from timestamp correction. FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. It can pace prerecorded input for real-time output, but it does not repair inaccurate file durations or bad source timestamps.

Likewise, do not add timestamp flags as a generic fix. -copyts preserves input timestamps rather than sanitizing them. -start_at_zero, when used with -copyts, shifts timestamps; frame-rate handling and muxer processing can also affect output timestamps. Check the behavior against your command and FFmpeg version in the FFmpeg documentation before changing these options.
Compare FFmpeg’s local output with YouTube
- Save or monitor a local output sample. Check the audio/video alignment and the timing of item boundaries. Use the same playlist section where the live problem appears.
- If the local output is already wrong, focus on source durations, stream compatibility, concatenation, and timestamp handling. Correct the inputs or timeline, then test again before changing YouTube settings.
- If the local output is synchronized, inspect YouTube’s stream health and error messages, check the encoder and CPU load, and test the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the stream in the encoder and reviewing the local archive, dashboard errors, CPU load, and outbound connection.
Verify YouTube Live ingest settings
For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its error guidance says intervals above 4 seconds can cause buffering and calls for a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. These are compatibility and stream-health checks, not a diagnosis of incorrect concat timestamps.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance to choose a bitrate appropriate to the ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. If YouTube reports a keyframe problem, follow its live-stream error guidance. Test audio and motion similar to the planned stream, and monitor stream health during the test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck bandwidth and monitor the stream
If the local file is clean but YouTube reports dropped frames, buffering, or other ingest problems, check the connection sending the stream. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, and continuous monitoring of audio and video quality. This is a platform recommendation for bandwidth margin, not evidence that playlist timestamps are drifting. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The next item starts late or early, and the error grows over time | Reported versus actual file durations, especially near the first point where the error appears | Correct known bad duration metadata or prepare the inputs consistently; retest the local output. |
| A gap or artifact appears at one transition | Stream count and type, codecs, time bases, and timing characteristics of the two adjacent files | Normalize incompatible inputs and verify the transition locally. |
| Audio and picture separate after a transition | Local audio/video timing, file durations, and stream compatibility | Locate the first affected input or boundary before changing live ingest settings. |
| The local output is synchronized, but YouTube reports stream errors | Encoder settings, stream-health messages, CPU load, local archive, and outbound connection | Use YouTube’s troubleshooting steps and verify ingest settings. |
| Viewers report delay, but playlist items and audio remain aligned | Whether the issue is capture-to-viewer latency rather than a changing playlist timeline | Compare the encoder output and YouTube preview; do not treat viewer delay alone as proof of schedule drift. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an FFmpeg machine running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
