First determine what actually stopped: the YouTube broadcast, the EC2 encoder, playback for some viewers, or only the stream archive. Those are different failures, and a missing archive does not prove that a live stream ended. India is part of the question, but the available evidence does not establish an India-specific YouTube ingest problem or a cause tied to an Indian AWS Region.
Identify what “stops” means
Write down the failure time and timezone, then compare what happened at the viewer, YouTube, and EC2 ends. Stop short of naming a cause until those timelines match.
- Broadcast ended: The live watch page stopped updating and YouTube Live Control Room showed the stream as ended or offline.
- Encoder stopped or disconnected: The EC2 encoder process exited, reported an error, or logged a disconnect or reconnect.
- Playback problem: Viewers saw buffering or a frozen picture, but the live status may still have been active. Reports from several viewers warrant checking the stream and encoder path; a single viewer’s report does not establish that the broadcast ended.
- Archive missing: The live stream may have ended normally even if no recording appeared afterward.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived when eligible, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Treat that as an archive limitation, not a stated maximum live-stream duration or proof that the live broadcast stopped. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the distinction.
Check YouTube’s status and stream-health evidence
In YouTube Live Control Room, review the stream-health status and messages covering the failure window. Compare their timestamps with the live watch page and the EC2 encoder logs. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health while live; its encoder settings and live-streaming guidance describes the available signals.

If the control room shows the stream ended, check whether the encoder stopped sending or whether an operator ended a scheduled stream in Live Control Room. YouTube also treats stopping content from the encoder as ending the stream. If the control room still showed a live stream while one viewer had trouble, investigate playback and that viewer’s connection before treating it as a broadcast termination.
Inspect the encoder, EC2 host, and outbound path
- Check the encoder process and logs. Find out whether the process remained alive, exited, or logged an output error or disconnect/reconnect at the recorded time. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load.
- Correlate host and service logs. Review operating-system and service logs around the same timestamp for a restart, resource problem, or other interruption. If the instance itself became unreachable, AWS says EC2 console output can help diagnose kernel and service-configuration problems.
- Review outbound network evidence. Compare EC2 network measurements with YouTube’s stream-health messages. AWS says CloudWatch instance metrics and ENA driver network-performance metrics can reveal bandwidth, packet activity, and exceeded instance-level network allowances. Short microbursts may not appear in ordinary CloudWatch periods, so a clean-looking graph does not necessarily rule them out.
- Test outbound connectivity if the encoder looks healthy. YouTube’s troubleshooting flow advises checking the outbound internet connection when the encoder appears healthy. A connection disruption can break a stream.
Use evidence from both ends: a YouTube ingest warning alone may not identify whether the encoder or the path failed, while a live encoder process alone does not prove it continued sending usable data. For an unreachable instance, consult AWS guidance on troubleshooting an EC2 instance.

Test whether EC2 network bandwidth is involved
Bandwidth behavior depends on the EC2 instance type and its documented network allowances. AWS says some smaller instance types marked “up to” use network I/O credits: after exhausting the credits, an instance returns to baseline bandwidth. AWS describes typical burst durations as 5–60 minutes depending on instance size. That range is not a promised failure time, and it does not support a general claim that EC2 credits last “a few hours.”
Check the exact instance’s baseline and burst specifications against network and packet metrics at the failure time. Also account for the configured video bitrate and any other outbound traffic. AWS’s EC2 network-bandwidth guidance describes how allowances vary. Without the instance type, bitrate, competing traffic, and matching measurements, credit exhaustion remains a hypothesis—not a diagnosis.

YouTube says the total streaming bitrate should fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving headroom; it warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. For an EC2-hosted encoder, assess the instance’s effective outbound path and concurrent traffic. A home-internet speed test does not measure that cloud path. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one universal bitrate.
Review YouTube encoder settings and test failover
Check the settings against YouTube’s guidance, but do not assume a settings mismatch explains a stream that ends after a few hours. YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS protocol options and recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Choose a bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate using YouTube’s published table.

Test with representative audio and motion, then watch stream health during a planned test. For important broadcasts, a backup encoder can add resilience, but it does not explain why the primary stopped. YouTube recommends exercising failover—for example, stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable—and confirming that the player rolls over. Follow YouTube’s encoder and stream-health guidance and YouTube’s live-streaming tips when planning the test.

- Failure timestamp and timezone, plus whether the live page, Live Control Room, encoder, viewers, or archive was affected.
- EC2 instance type and Region, encoder software and version, and its relevant output configuration.
- Encoder and system/service logs, YouTube stream-health messages, and outbound network metrics covering the same window.
- Whether the host remained reachable and whether a backup-encoder rollover was tested.
The cause cannot be established from the symptom alone. The case details and time-aligned signals are needed before attributing it to an EC2 instance allowance, encoder, YouTube ingest, or an India-specific condition. No India-specific defect or Region-based cause is established by the available official guidance.
