If Logic Pro can’t see your audio interface, first check whether macOS detects it, then select it in Logic’s audio-device settings. Connect and power the interface, check its appearance in Audio MIDI Setup, and verify its driver and compatibility requirements with the manufacturer. The exact menu labels can vary by Logic Pro version.

Is the interface missing from macOS or only from Logic?

Logic Pro uses Core Audio hardware and the defaults configured in Audio MIDI Setup. That means there are two separate checks: whether macOS recognizes the interface at all, and whether Logic is set to use it.

  1. Connect the interface directly to your Mac while troubleshooting, rather than through a hub or daisy chain. Confirm that it is powered if its design requires external power.
  2. Open Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup and look for the interface in the device list.
  3. If it does not appear there, check the cable, port, power, and the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Apple notes that hubs or daisy-chaining can cause latency, particularly with slower USB 1.1 devices; this is a reason to simplify the connection path, not proof that every hub prevents detection.

If macOS does not list the interface, changing Logic’s input setting will not make the hardware appear. Resolve the connection, driver, or compatibility issue at the macOS level first.

If macOS sees it, select it in Logic Pro

In Logic Pro, open Preferences or Settings > Audio > Devices—the label depends on your version—and choose the interface as the audio input device. Connecting an interface does not necessarily select it for Logic.

When possible, use the same interface for both input and output. Apple recommends avoiding separate input and output devices if possible. If you do need separate devices, select the intended hardware for each direction and confirm that the outputs you expect are available.

Check whether the interface needs a driver

Driver requirements depend on the interface. Many Core Audio-compliant devices work without a separate manufacturer driver; others require a driver to be installed and configured. Follow the interface maker’s current instructions rather than assuming that every device needs a driver—or that none do.

Did the problem start after a Logic Pro or macOS update?

An update can change whether an interface or its driver works with the system. Check the interface manufacturer’s current compatibility notes and driver instructions for both your macOS version and Logic Pro version. Apple also recommends checking compatibility when troubleshooting Logic after updates. If the device worked before an update, this check is more relevant than changing unrelated project settings.

Test Logic without the external interface

To determine whether the issue follows the interface or involves Logic, a project, or another connected device, simplify the setup:

  1. Disconnect external devices one at a time and retest Logic.
  2. Try Logic with the Mac’s built-in input and output instead of the interface.
  3. If Logic works with built-in audio, the interface or its setup may need an update or service. Contact the manufacturer if its compatibility and driver instructions do not resolve the issue.

Apple’s Logic Pro troubleshooting guide also documents a launch test: open Logic while holding Control, then choose Don’t Launch when prompted. If Logic opens this way, the cause may involve the interface or a third-party Audio Units plug-in. This test helps isolate a launch problem; it does not by itself identify which component is responsible.

When should you check sample rate or clocking?

Sample rate is not the first fix when the interface is absent from Logic’s device list. Check it when the interface is detected but Logic reports an audio/MIDI synchronization problem: compare the project’s sample rate with the interface’s rate. If you use an aggregate device, verify its clock-source setup as well. Apple’s audio/MIDI synchronization guidance covers these checks.
