If your ASUS laptop becomes slow after a Windows update, first check whether Windows is still downloading or installing the update, then restart if prompted. The timing is a clue, not proof that the update caused the slowdown: background activity, heat, power settings, or low storage can also affect performance. Work through the low-risk checks below before considering a restore, update rollback, or reset.
1. Let Windows finish updating and restart if prompted
Open Settings > Windows Update and check whether an update is downloading or installing. ASUS recommends allowing active update work to finish before taking other action. If Windows says a restart is required, restart the laptop or schedule the restart in Windows Update.
There is no universal wait time: the duration depends on the update and the laptop. Avoid treating high activity during an update as a permanent fault until you have checked its status. ASUS’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance is available in its slow-system troubleshooting FAQ, last updated March 20, 2026.
2. Disconnect extras and check model-specific updates
Disconnect nonessential peripherals while you troubleshoot so they are less likely to complicate the diagnosis. Check that Windows packages, drivers, and BIOS are current using support resources for your exact ASUS model. Where supported, MyASUS System Update is one way to check for ASUS updates.

Do not install a BIOS update simply because the laptop feels slow. The correct update and installation instructions depend on the model; use its ASUS support page and follow the instructions there.
3. Check power mode, temperature, and diagnostics
Connect the AC adapter and review the performance mode
Connect the AC adapter while evaluating performance; ASUS notes that adapter connection may affect it. If your model provides performance controls in MyASUS, open MyASUS > Device Settings and review the available mode. Options vary by model, and some ROG or TUF devices may use Armoury Crate instead. Choose a suitable mode for your workload rather than assuming every ASUS laptop has the same controls.

Check for heat or hardware issues
ASUS warns that elevated device temperature can reduce performance. If the laptop is unusually hot, use the overheating guidance for your model rather than assuming a particular accessory will fix it. If MyASUS is available, run MyASUS > System Diagnosis to check for hardware issues.

4. Find background activity and check available storage
Look for programs using system resources
Open Task Manager and review resource use to see whether Windows, an antivirus scan, another program, or a download or file-sharing application is active. Close programs you do not need at the moment. Check Windows Update status as well: activity may be part of an update still in progress.

Review temporary files deliberately
Limited space on the system drive can affect performance and functionality. Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files and review the listed categories. Select only the files you understand and intend to remove; do not assume every category is disposable.
5. Should you uninstall an update if the laptop is slow?
Not automatically. ASUS lists uninstalling apps, Windows updates, or drivers among recovery options when a problem follows a recent change, but that is a conditional rollback—not a blanket fix for any slowdown. First identify the update or driver that coincided with the problem and consult the relevant Windows and ASUS instructions for your model before removing it. ASUS’s Windows recovery options FAQ, last updated March 20, 2026, describes the available recovery approaches.

6. Use System Restore only when the timing fits
If the slowdown began recently and a restore point from before it started is available, System Restore may help. It keeps personal files, but removes apps, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point.

- Select a restore point dated before the slowdown began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs and review what would be removed before proceeding.
- Connect the AC adapter and leave the laptop on while restoration runs. Do not force it off.

7. Reset Windows only as a last step
If the preceding checks and appropriate recovery options do not resolve the issue, ASUS recommends backing up personal files before resetting the PC. An external drive is one possible backup destination, not a performance fix or a requirement specified by ASUS. Consult current ASUS and Windows reset instructions before proceeding, because resetting changes the system state. If the laptop remains slow, contact ASUS support.
Quick Recap
Choose the least disruptive step that fits the evidence
| Option | When it fits | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Check update status, restart, inspect resource use, or review settings | First steps for most slowdowns | Low-impact checks; they do not intentionally remove apps or personal files. |
| Update model-specific drivers or BIOS | When the exact model’s ASUS support resources show relevant updates | Model-dependent; follow the applicable instructions. |
| Uninstall an update, driver, or app | When a specific recent change plausibly coincides with the onset | Rolls back that change; do not remove updates indiscriminately. |
| System Restore | When a suitable restore point predates the recent problem | Preserves personal files but removes later-installed apps, drivers, and updates. |
| Reset the PC | After other suitable steps fail | Changes system state; back up personal files first. |
