If you use a private-cloud or on-premise Eyes deployment, also verify its server URL: Applitools lists a wrong API key and a missing private-deployment URL among the usual causes of this error (Applitools Support).
Fix the key and endpoint in this order

Retrieve the key for the intended account
Sign in to the Applitools Dashboard, open the account menu or avatar, select My API key, and copy the execution key for the account or team where the test should appear. A valid key from a different account may still be the wrong key for this test. Applitools documents this dashboard path and recommends using the
APPLITOOLS_API_KEYenvironment variable rather than hardcoding the secret in a configuration file (Applitools Dashboard documentation). -
Make the key available to the process that runs the test
Set
APPLITOOLS_API_KEYin the environment actually used by your test runner: the shell, IDE run configuration, CI job, or container that launches it. Setting the variable in another terminal or developer session does not ensure that the test process inherits it. Applitools’ Selenium Java quickstart demonstrates setting the variable before running the test and notes IDE configuration as an option (Selenium Java quickstart).Use a protected CI variable or secret store where available. Do not commit a live key to source control or print it in logs.

Check the server URL only if you use a private deployment
For a private-cloud or on-premise Eyes deployment, configure the server URL supplied for that deployment. The Figma plugin documentation lists
https://eyes.applitools.comas its public default and advises verifying the URL for private Eyes clouds; do not assume that public endpoint is right for a private installation (Eyes Figma Plugin troubleshooting).If you use the public Eyes cloud, do not change the server URL simply because the error is a 401. Applitools identifies the missing URL as a usual cause specifically for private-cloud or on-premise setups.

Retest after changing one item
Change one configuration item at a time, then rerun the same test. This makes it easier to identify whether the key value, process environment, or private endpoint was responsible. If the error remains, note the SDK and version, the sanitized error text, whether the deployment is public or private, and how the test process receives its secret.
Configure the key safely
Applitools’ standard test execution setup uses APPLITOOLS_API_KEY. Some SDKs also allow explicit assignment in code: for example, its Appium Python documentation describes setting the environment variable or assigning the key to the Eyes object’s api_key property (Appium Python documentation).

Prefer the environment-variable or secret-store approach when practical. If you use an SDK’s direct assignment option, keep the key outside committed source and avoid exposing it in exception output or diagnostic logs. Configuration interfaces can differ by SDK, so follow the documentation for the SDK and version in your project rather than assuming one universal precedence rule.
Public cloud, private cloud, and MCP keys are separate checks

The MCP key distinction matters when an MCP tool fails; it is not a replacement for the execution-key checks for an ordinary visual test. Consult the documented operation and configuration for the MCP server (Applitools MCP Server documentation).

Common causes and what to check
- Wrong account or team: retrieve the key again from the account where the run should appear.
- Key is unset in the runner: inspect the environment or secret mapping for the exact process, job, or container that launches the test.
- Private deployment uses no server URL or the wrong one: obtain the deployment-specific URL from your Eyes administrator and configure it for the relevant SDK or tool.
- MCP operation uses the wrong permission key: check whether that operation calls for a read or write key rather than the test execution key.
- 401 continues after these checks: verify the SDK or tool’s own configuration documentation and capture a sanitized error plus version and deployment details for support. These checks cover documented usual causes, not every possible SDK-specific failure.

What to include when escalating a persistent 401
- SDK or MCP tool name and version.
- The complete error text with secrets and sensitive details removed.
- Whether the Eyes account uses the public cloud, private cloud, or on-premise deployment.
- Where the runner obtains its key, without sharing the key itself.
- Which checks you changed and whether the result changed.
