If your Apple Watch or Pixel Watch won’t pair, start with the basics: charge it, keep it near the phone, check the required wireless settings, update the relevant software, and restart both devices. Use the instructions for your watch’s brand—Apple Watch pairs through an iPhone’s Apple Watch app, while Pixel Watch uses the Google Pixel Watch app on Android. Reset only after these checks, since a reset can erase watch data or leave an account lock in place.
Before troubleshooting: check the watch, phone, and app
- Charge the watch and keep it close to the phone. For Pixel Watch Fast Pair, Google specifies a distance of 0.5 m (1.6 ft) or less.
- Confirm you’re using the right companion app: the Apple Watch app on iPhone, or the Google Pixel Watch app on Android.
- Check that the watch isn’t still paired to another phone. Apple notes that a clock face appearing during setup, or an iPhone reporting that it cannot connect, can indicate an existing pairing. Apple’s pairing help explains how to check and resolve this.
- Install available updates for the phone, watch, and companion app. Google recommends keeping all three current to help address pairing issues and app errors. Google’s Pixel Watch update guidance has more information.
Fix an Apple Watch that won’t pair
Check iPhone settings and start setup again
- Update the iPhone, turn on Bluetooth, and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular.
- Keep the iPhone unlocked and near the watch. Open the Apple Watch app and tap Add Watch if the setup prompt does not appear.
- If the camera cannot read the watch’s pairing animation, choose Pair Apple Watch Manually.

If pairing is stuck or the watch shows an Apple logo
While the watch is in pairing mode, hold the Digital Crown until the reset option appears, then tap Reset. If the screen is black with a white Apple logo, hold the Digital Crown and side button together until the watch restarts; if needed, use the on-watch reset option and retry with the iPhone nearby. These steps erase watch content, so use them only when the ordinary setup checks have not resolved the problem.

If the watch is paired to an old iPhone
If that iPhone is available, unpair the watch from it before setting up with another phone. On the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch → All Watches → info button → Unpair Apple Watch. This erases the watch, removes it from the iCloud account, and turns off Activation Lock.

If the paired iPhone is unavailable, you can erase the watch from Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. Important: erasing directly on the watch does not remove Activation Lock. To pair it again, you must enter the Apple Account and password used to set it up. This matters especially for a second-hand watch: ask the previous owner to remove it from their account if you do not have those credentials. Apple documents both options in its pairing troubleshooting guidance.
When you’ve changed iPhones
If you still have the old iPhone, use Apple’s supported transfer or unpairing flow, then pair the watch with the new phone. If setup on the new iPhone left a Pairing Not Complete message, put the unlocked watch on your wrist and choose Finish Pairing in the Apple Watch app.

If the old iPhone is gone, erase the watch and pair it with the new one. You can restore the most recent available watch backup or set up the watch as new; an update may be required before a backup appears. Changes made since the last backup may be lost. Fix a Pixel Watch that won’t pair
Check connectivity, permissions, and compatibility
- Charge the watch and update its firmware, the Google Pixel Watch app, and the phone software.
- Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and location on the phone. Make sure it has an internet connection, and turn off Airplane Mode on both the phone and watch.
- In the phone’s app settings, allow the Google Pixel Watch app to access nearby devices.
- Bring the phone within 0.5 m (1.6 ft) of the watch for Fast Pair, then try setup again.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance also says Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 connect only to Android phones. Requirements can differ for other generations, so check the current compatibility help for your exact model. Google lists the setup and connection checks in its Pixel Watch pairing help and connection troubleshooting guidance. Follow any model-specific compatibility notice shown during setup; minimum phone operating-system versions for every model and region are not established here.

If setup freezes or says “Can’t pair”
Restart the watch by holding the crown for three seconds, selecting Restart, and waiting for it to start fully. Bring it near the phone and retry pairing. If the app says Can’t find your watch, recheck Bluetooth, location, Wi-Fi, internet access, and the nearby-device permission before resetting.
Factory reset only if the checks and restart fail
A Pixel Watch factory reset erases its apps, settings, and data. Before proceeding, make sure you can access the Google Account credentials you may need afterward; Google notes that the most recent PIN or Google Account login may be requested during pairing.

Reset from the watch at Settings → System → Disconnect & reset, or from the phone app at System → Reset and unpair watch. If those flows fail, use Google’s additional recovery guidance rather than treating a factory reset as the first troubleshooting step. See Google’s pairing and reset instructions.
When to contact support
If the appropriate brand-specific steps fail, contact Apple or Google support for diagnosis. A watch that has been physically damaged or still cannot be detected after setup checks may need further assessment. The troubleshooting guidance does not establish that a particular step succeeds in every case, and it provides no basis for buying an adapter or repair tool as a routine fix.
