If your Android phone slows down after a few hours, check whether it is hot first. Heat can cause a Pixel to reduce CPU performance, although that does not establish heat as the cause on every Android phone. Then restart the phone, check its free storage and updates, and use Safe Mode to see whether a downloaded app may be involved. Try these steps in order, saving a factory reset for last.
1. Check whether the phone is hot
Notice whether the slowdown happens while the phone is warm or hot, particularly during demanding use such as extended navigation, video calls, or recording. Google says Pixel thermal protection may reduce CPU performance as temperature rises; it may also affect charging speed, camera functions, connectivity, or power mode. This is Pixel-specific guidance, not proof that heat explains slowdowns on all Android devices. Google’s Pixel temperature and thermal-protection guidance describes the behavior.
If the phone is hot, stop demanding tasks, unplug it if it is charging, and let it cool in a cooler, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Avoid using it in an enclosed or poorly ventilated location while it cools. Resume use once it has cooled.
2. Restart the phone and check for system updates
A restart and an Android system update are useful first checks for general slowness. Google recommends both in its Android phone troubleshooting guidance. Settings labels and update menus vary by manufacturer, so follow the instructions for your phone if the paths differ.

- Restart the phone using its power menu.
- Open Settings and look for the system software or Android update option. Check for and install an available update, following the on-screen instructions.
3. Check how much storage is free
Google says, “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” The figure is a troubleshooting threshold, not a diagnosis; the support page does not state a publication year. Check the storage section in Settings. If less than 10% is free, remove or move files you no longer need, then see whether the slowdown improves. The exact menu name varies by phone.
4. Update apps, then test in Safe Mode
If restarting, updating Android, and checking storage do not resolve the issue, update your installed apps. If the phone still slows down, Safe Mode can help test whether a downloaded app is involved. Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps; if the phone performs better there, one of those apps is a likely contributor, though the test does not identify which one by itself.

- Use your phone maker’s instructions to start the device in Safe Mode. The steps differ among Android manufacturers and models.
- Use the phone long enough to check whether the slowdown returns under similar conditions.
- Restart normally to leave Safe Mode. If performance improved there, remove recently installed apps one at a time, checking performance after each removal.

Cache is temporary app data; app storage contains the app’s data. Clearing cache may make that app slower the next time it opens while it rebuilds temporary data. Clearing storage is different: it permanently deletes that app’s data. Do not clear app storage as a routine speed fix. If you are troubleshooting a particular app, check Google’s explanation of clearing an app’s cache and data before choosing an option. Menu labels vary across Android versions and manufacturers.

6. Factory reset only after the other checks
A factory reset removes all data from the phone and uninstalls apps along with their associated data. Treat it as a last resort, not a quick performance tweak.
- Back up the data you need before resetting.
- Follow the reset instructions for your exact phone model; the Settings path varies by manufacturer.
- After the reset, check performance before reinstalling apps, so you can tell whether the problem returns with the phone’s usual setup.
If the slowdown continues after the recommended troubleshooting steps, contact the phone manufacturer or carrier for support. Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance includes this escalation.
