If an AI assistant forgets what you told it in another chat, first verify that cross-conversation memory is available for your account and enabled. Then save only durable, high-level facts—such as your preferred answer style—and repeat exact project material when you need it. Memory is selective personalization, not a complete transcript or a reliable store for long templates.
The controls differ by product, account, plan, region, age, platform and workspace policy. The steps below cover the documented controls for ChatGPT and Gemini, explain what deletion really does, and give you a dependable fallback when memory is unavailable.
Why an AI assistant forgets between chats
A new conversation may not automatically include the context of an older one. Even when a memory feature exists, it usually retrieves selected facts or summaries rather than every message. The assistant can therefore miss a detail, use an outdated preference, or decline to reproduce exact wording that appeared in a previous thread.
Three separate things are often confused:
- Saved memories: durable facts or preferences intentionally retained for personalization.
- Reference to past chats: a feature that can supply relevant context from earlier conversations when enabled.
- Conversation history and files: the original source material, which may be stored separately from remembered facts.
Disabling one source does not automatically erase the others. A setting that is unavailable for your account cannot be made to work by changing a prompt, and a memory feature should not be treated as a searchable archive.

How to fix forgetting in ChatGPT
1. Check whether Memory is available
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile or account menu.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Look for the controls presented for your account. Depending on eligibility, you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, a memory summary, or memory management.
OpenAI says availability and controls can vary by plan, region, platform and workspace. If the Memory section or a particular toggle is missing, an organization policy or account eligibility is a more likely explanation than a broken conversation.

2. Turn on the source of continuity you actually need
Enable Reference saved memories when you want durable preferences or facts to influence future chats. If your account offers it, enable Reference chat history when relevant context from older conversations should be available as well. These are different sources; turning on one does not imply that the other is active.

In a current chat, state the fact plainly. For example:
Remember that I prefer concise answers with metric units.
Then ask:
What do you remember about my response preferences?
Correct anything that is wrong or outdated immediately. A memory that is never reviewed can continue steering answers after your circumstances change.

3. Store the right kind of information
Use saved memory for small, stable facts that improve many future conversations:
- Preferred level of detail or writing tone.
- Dietary, accessibility or formatting preferences you want applied repeatedly.
- Long-term project context in a short, general form.
- Units, programming language or operating system defaults you commonly use.
Do not rely on Memory for an exact project brief, a long prompt, a legal clause, a code listing, a multi-page template or a verbatim quotation. OpenAI describes Memory as selective and says it is not intended to retain every detail or large blocks of exact text. Paste the authoritative text into the current chat or keep it in a reusable document.
4. Find and remove an outdated memory
Ask the assistant what it remembers, then use the memory-management controls in Settings > Personalization > Memory to inspect or delete entries when those controls are available. You can also tell ChatGPT to forget a specific fact, and then verify the result by asking what remains.
Deleting the chat where a fact first appeared may not delete a separately saved memory. Conversely, turning Memory off does not itself erase saved memories. To remove a detail completely, check every relevant source: saved-memory entries and the chats that contain the original information. OpenAI documents these sources separately in its Memory in ChatGPT guidance.

5. Understand what happens when chat-history reference is disabled
If you turn off Reference chat history, OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is deleted within 30 days; the original chats are not automatically deleted. This is different from deleting a conversation itself. Deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to OpenAI’s stated legal or security exceptions, and cannot be restored. 6. Keep privacy and training controls separate
Reference chat history controls personalization. Improve the model for everyone is a different data-control setting. OpenAI says turning off the latter leaves chats in your history but prevents them from being used to train ChatGPT. Changing a training preference therefore does not switch Memory on or off. The distinction is described in the Data Controls FAQ.
How to fix forgetting in Gemini
1. Confirm eligibility before looking for a setting
Google’s current help documentation says personalization from past Gemini chats requires a personal Google Account, an account holder aged 18 or older, and Keep Activity enabled. Work, school and supervised accounts are excluded, and the feature is not supported in every Gemini product surface. If the option is absent, check the account type and activity setting first rather than assuming a defect.

2. Enable Keep Activity and past-chat personalization where offered
- Sign in with the personal Google Account you intend to use with Gemini.
- Open Gemini’s activity or personalization controls and confirm that Keep Activity is enabled.
- Enable the past-chat personalization option if it is shown for your account and product surface.
The exact labels and location can change as Google updates Gemini. Use the help page linked above as the authority for the controls currently shown to your account.
3. Ask Gemini to identify and correct the source
When a response appears to use older information, ask Gemini whether it used information from past chats. If the detail is wrong, correct it directly in the current conversation and state the preferred replacement. This gives you a way to distinguish a remembered preference from an inference made from the present prompt.
For exact wording, large instructions or a complete project specification, provide the source again. Past-chat personalization is not a guarantee that Gemini will retrieve every sentence from an older thread.
4. Remove information that came through a connected app
If Gemini obtained a detail from a connected app, deleting only the Gemini conversation may not remove every route by which the information can be used. Google’s guidance says to delete the relevant chats and disconnect the connected app. Perform both actions, then check the account’s activity and personalization controls.

Create a short preference card
Keep a plain-text or markdown note with facts that are stable and safe to reuse. Include only information that genuinely improves answers, such as:
Answer style: concise, with headings and numbered steps.
Units: metric; timezone: UTC.
Code examples: Python 3.12 unless I specify otherwise.
Accessibility: describe visual differences in text.Paste this card at the start of a new project or whenever the assistant’s behavior drifts. A short card is easier to audit and update than a long conversation export.

Separate durable context from session context
Durable context belongs in a memory feature or preference card. Session context includes temporary facts such as a deadline, a one-time customer requirement, a draft under review or a file uploaded for today’s task. Repeat session context in the relevant chat instead of asking a memory system to retain it indefinitely.
Use a canonical source for exact material
Store contracts, specifications, style guides, prompts and code in a document under your control. When precision matters, attach or paste the current version and identify it as authoritative. Memory can remind the assistant that a project exists; it should not be the only copy of the project.
Start each important chat with a context block
A compact block reduces ambiguity:
Goal: [one sentence]
Audience: [who will use the result]
Constraints: [limits, versions, deadlines]
Definitions: [terms that must keep their meaning]
Deliverable: [exact output format]Replace the bracketed labels with your real values before sending. This is more dependable than asking an assistant to reconstruct an old conversation from memory.

The assistant remembers a preference but not a document
This is expected behavior for selective memory. Keep the document in a reusable file and provide it again. Do not add the entire document to saved memory merely to avoid one paste.
The assistant remembers an old preference
Ask what it remembers, state the corrected preference explicitly, and remove the obsolete saved entry if the product offers memory management. Also check whether the old instruction still appears in a referenced chat or connected source.

The memory control is missing
Check account type, plan, region, age requirements, platform and workspace policy. For Gemini, verify that the account is personal, the user is 18 or older and Keep Activity is enabled. For ChatGPT, a missing control can reflect availability rules rather than a local failure.
It forgets only after a chat is deleted
Deleting a source chat can remove the original context while leaving a separately saved memory in ChatGPT. Review saved memories independently. In Gemini, if a connected app supplied the detail, delete the relevant chats and disconnect that app as well.
It appears to know something you removed
Check all possible sources: saved memories, remaining chats, uploaded files, activity records and connected apps. Removing one route does not necessarily remove another. Allow the documented deletion period to pass before concluding that a setting failed, and avoid sharing sensitive material while investigating.

Confirm that you are signed into the same account and using the same product surface. Workspace administrators can restrict features, and not every platform exposes identical controls. Test with a harmless preference rather than a sensitive fact.
Privacy decisions before enabling memory
Memory can save time, but it also creates another place where personal information may be retained. Before enabling it, decide which details are acceptable to personalize responses and which should remain in a controlled document or not be supplied at all.
- Do not use memory as the sole record for passwords, recovery codes, financial credentials or confidential client material.
- Review remembered facts periodically, especially after changing jobs, locations, devices or health-related preferences.
- When sharing a device or workspace, check whether other users can access account settings or conversation history.
- For a sensitive correction, remove the saved entry and the original source chat where applicable, then verify the product’s stated deletion behavior.
What to do when no assistant memory is available
You can still achieve consistent results without cross-chat recall:
- Maintain one current preference card and one canonical project brief.
- Copy the relevant sections into each new chat.
- Use stable filenames and revision dates so you know which source is current.
- Ask the assistant to list the constraints it is using before it produces a high-stakes result.
- Save the final answer and any corrections back into your own documentation, not into an assumed hidden memory.
This approach works across products because it makes the context visible, reviewable and portable. It also prevents a plan or workspace change from silently removing information you thought was available.
