Start with the failing HTTP status, any CloudFront error code, and the exact manifest or media-segment URL. A CloudFront error can come from the viewer request, an incorrect cache behavior or origin, origin permissions, a network or TLS problem, the origin application, or a cached error response. Identify which layer failed before changing the distribution.
Capture the failure before changing settings
Record the details for one failing request. A single viewer report does not establish that every viewer or region is affected.
- HTTP status code and any CloudFront error code or response headers shown to the viewer.
- Timestamp and, if available, the viewer’s region or network.
- The exact URL that fails, including its path and capitalization.
- Whether the URL is the parent manifest or a media segment. Test each separately.
- The origin type and the distribution behavior expected to handle that path.
CloudFront serves video over HTTP while the video is packaged as manifests and segments. Common formats include HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF; the correct path patterns depend on the packaging workflow and origin. See AWS’s overview of video on demand and live streaming with CloudFront.
Use the status code to choose the next check
A 4xx or 5xx response may come from the origin or from CloudFront’s inability to obtain a response. AWS’s status-specific guide covers 400, 401, 403, 404, 412, 500, 502, 503, and 504; use the exact status and error evidence rather than treating all CloudFront errors alike. See Troubleshooting error response status codes in CloudFront.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Observed failure | First checks |
|---|---|
| 4xx | Request path, authorization, cache behavior, and the origin’s status. For an S3 origin returning 403, check object existence, exact key capitalization, bucket permissions, and origin credentials. |
| 502 Bad Gateway | Origin DNS configuration and whether CloudFront can establish a TLS connection to the origin. Check the exact CloudFront error code and origin hostname. See AWS’s HTTP 502 troubleshooting guidance. |
| 504 Gateway Timeout | First test origin reachability and whether firewall or security-group rules allow CloudFront traffic. Confirm the origin is publicly accessible where required. If it is reachable, investigate application response time and origin timeout settings. The origin may also return a 504. See AWS’s HTTP 504 troubleshooting guidance. |
| Other 5xx | Determine whether the origin returned the status or CloudFront failed to get a timely response; then follow the status-specific checks in AWS’s CloudFront error guide. |
Verify manifest and segment routing
- Open the CloudFront distribution configuration and identify the origin domain and origin path for the behavior that should serve the failing URL.
- Compare the requested path against the cache behavior path patterns. Check that the manifest and its segments are routed to the intended origin and endpoint.
- For AWS MediaPackage workflows, consult AWS’s documented endpoint-specific origin configuration and cache behaviors. Parent manifests and segments may require different behavior patterns; an unmatched or incorrectly routed endpoint can produce a 404.
- Check the wildcard or default behavior for paths that do not match a more specific pattern.
- Re-test the exact manifest and a segment URL after correcting a mismatch. Do not copy a pattern from an example without confirming that its packaging format and endpoint match your setup.
AWS’s examples are specific to their workflows and do not establish one universal pattern for every HLS, CMAF, DASH, Smooth Streaming, MediaPackage, or other HTTP-origin deployment. See AWS’s live-streaming configuration examples.
Check origin access and object availability
If the origin is Amazon S3
An S3-origin 403 does not prove that the problem is only a permission denial. Check that the object exists, that its key matches the requested path exactly—including capitalization—and that the bucket permissions and credentials used for origin access are valid and sufficient. AWS notes that a missing object or a case mismatch can appear as Access Denied. See AWS’s distribution troubleshooting guidance.

If the origin is not S3
Do not apply S3 bucket steps to another origin. Check that origin’s authorization configuration and access logs, and verify whether it received the request and what status it returned.
For 504, separate reachability from slow responses
Test whether the custom origin can be reached from the public network as required by its configuration. Review firewall and security-group rules for traffic from CloudFront. If the origin is reachable and permitted, inspect application response times and the configured timeout. Also check origin logs: the origin itself may have generated the 504 rather than CloudFront timing out while waiting.

For 502, inspect DNS and TLS
Confirm that the origin hostname resolves as expected and that CloudFront can establish a TLS connection to it. Use the error code and hostname to narrow the cause; a generic “502” alone does not identify which DNS or TLS condition failed.
Allow for cached error responses after a correction
CloudFront can cache selected 4xx and 5xx responses. How long an error remains visible depends on the status, edge-cache state, custom error configuration, error caching minimum TTL, and in some cases Cache-Control headers. AWS’s general status-processing guidance documents a 10-second default minimum TTL, but actual distribution settings and response headers can change what you observe. Check the current configuration and response headers before concluding that the underlying fault persists. See How CloudFront processes HTTP 4xx and 5xx status codes from your origin.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that use case; it is not a fix for a CloudFront distribution error. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams what you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
