Then follow the steps for the symptom you’re seeing. Apple’s recommended checks include updating and reconnecting your device, checking the case’s power and cable, and confirming audio balance. If those steps do not help, reset the AirPods using the instructions for your generation; a reset removes custom settings.
AirPods Pro won’t connect
Charging and connection problems can overlap, so first verify that both earbuds are seated in the case and charging. Then work through these checks:
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you want to use, and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put both AirPods in the case and check that they are charging.
- Put the AirPods in your ears. Open the device’s audio output controls, select your AirPods Pro, and test playback with the volume turned up.
- If the AirPods do not appear or will not connect, put them back in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then open it and try again.
- To pair with an iPhone or iPad, open the case near the device and use the pairing control for your AirPods generation. On a Mac, follow Apple’s manual pairing instructions in Connect your AirPods and AirPods Pro to your iPhone.
- If they still will not connect, reset them using the generation-specific instructions below. Apple’s guidance is direct: “If you still can’t connect, reset your AirPods.” See If your AirPods or AirPods Pro won’t connect.
AirPods Pro won’t charge
Use a cable that matches the charging port on your case: some AirPods Pro cases have Lightning ports and others have USB-C. Check the case before choosing a cable. Apple recommends leaving the AirPods and case to charge for at least 15 minutes when they will not charge.
- Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid.
- Connect a compatible cable to the case and a power adapter. Make sure the cable is firmly seated at both ends and that the adapter is connected to a working outlet.
- Leave the case and AirPods charging for at least 15 minutes, then check the charge status on an Apple device or at the case.
- If you are using wireless charging with a compatible case and its status light does not illuminate, reposition the case. If needed, try a wired connection.
- Check the case’s charging port for debris and follow Apple’s model-specific directions for cleaning it. See How to clean your AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and EarPods.
If the case or earbuds still do not charge, reset the pair using the instructions below. A reset returns custom settings to their defaults.

Reset AirPods Pro using the right generation’s controls
Identify your AirPods Pro generation before resetting. AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2 use a setup button on the back of the case. Newer AirPods generations use a front-of-case double-tap sequence instead. Follow the matching instructions on Reset your AirPods; do not use the rear-button sequence for a model with front-case controls.
