A macOS app that bundles its own libraries should refer to them through paths that work inside the bundle—not through absolute paths from the developer’s machine. To make an app relocatable, inspect the Mach-O dependency graph, replace machine-specific install names with suitable relative references such as @rpath, place the libraries correctly, and sign the finished code after editing.
The “24 absolute paths” in the DeepSeek Harness installer title refers to the author’s reported incident; the exact entries and affected binaries are project-specific. The same diagnosis and repair process applies to other macOS apps that stop launching after being moved.
Why does a macOS app fail after you move it?
A Mach-O executable or library can record a dependency using an absolute install name, such as a path into a developer’s build or installation directory. That name tells the dynamic linker where to look. If the referenced location does not exist on the recipient’s Mac, the dependency may not load and the app can fail to launch.
Apple distinguishes absolute paths from paths relative to the executable, the Mach-O image containing the reference, or runtime search paths. For a library included in an app bundle, Apple’s guidance is to use a relative path. Its Metal documentation states: “Use a relative path when you include the dynamic library as part of a bundle or app.” Apple Developer Documentation: MTLLibrary.installName.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An app is not self-contained merely because its main executable has no machine-specific path. A bundled library may itself refer to an absolute path, so inspect and repair the whole dependency graph.
How do the Mach-O path styles differ?
| Path style | What it resolves against | When it can help |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute path | A fixed location in the filesystem | When a library is deliberately installed at that fixed location. It is brittle for a self-contained, relocatable app. |
@executable_path |
The directory containing the process’s main executable | When a library’s location is naturally defined relative to that executable. Account for the executable’s actual location inside the bundle. |
@loader_path |
The directory containing the Mach-O image with the reference | When a dependency should be located relative to the referencing executable or library. Check nested-library cases. |
@rpath |
Runtime search paths available to the loading context | When the bundle’s executables and libraries move together and the relevant load context has an appropriate run path. |
Apple’s archived Run-Path Dependent Libraries article, updated July 23, 2012, describes run-path-dependent libraries as a way to build executable-and-library directory structures that users can relocate without breaking them. It says the feature is available in OS X 10.5 and later; that historical statement is not a substitute for checking the deployment targets and current toolchain relevant to a particular project.

How do you find absolute dylib paths in a Mac app?
Inspect the built app or installer payload, not only the project’s build settings. Apple’s bundling guidance uses otool to inspect dependencies and load commands, including references from libraries as well as executables. Apple: Embedding nonstandard code structures in a bundle.
- Locate the actual payload. Expand or otherwise access the app as it will be distributed. Identify its executables and bundled dynamic libraries or frameworks.
- List each Mach-O file’s dependencies. Run
otool -L /path/to/MachOfor the main executable and each bundled library. Review every listed install name and record absolute paths, the file containing each reference, and the intended bundled target. - Inspect run-path load commands. Run
otool -l /path/to/MachOand examine theLC_RPATHentries. Check the executable and any relevant library load contexts; a dependency name using@rpathneeds a suitable runtime search path. - Trace dependencies recursively. For each bundled library, inspect its own dependencies. A clean-looking main executable does not establish that the libraries it loads are relocatable.
Apple’s standard macOS bundle structure places dynamic libraries and frameworks in Contents/Frameworks and executables in Contents/MacOS; other resources belong in appropriate bundle locations. Apple: Placing content in a bundle. The correct relative path depends on where each executable and library actually sits.

How do you fix an @rpath or install name?
Prefer fixing the build
If you control the library build, configure it to emit relocatable install names and dependencies. This avoids carrying a machine-specific path into the finished app and reduces the need for post-build rewriting.
Rewrite load commands when rebuilding is not possible
For a third-party or otherwise unmodifiable library, Apple documents install_name_tool as a way to change the library identifier, rewrite dependencies, and add or adjust runtime search paths. Apple: Embedding nonstandard code structures in a bundle.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Plan each edit against the real bundle layout. A library in Contents/Frameworks and a tool in Contents/MacOS do not share the same relationship to every target. Choose an appropriate relative form, update the library’s identifier where needed, change each referencing load command, and ensure the executable or loader has a matching LC_RPATH. Do not assume that changing the main executable alone repairs dependent libraries.
Reinspect after editing
Run otool -L and otool -l again on every changed Mach-O file. Confirm that dependencies point to intended bundled libraries and that the relevant load contexts expose the run paths needed to resolve them. Also confirm that the required libraries and their dependencies are actually present in the bundle.

When should you sign and package the app?
Mach-O load-command edits change code, so complete those edits before the final signing step. Then sign the finished code and prepare the distribution container using Apple’s current guidance for the delivery method and target macOS and Xcode versions. For direct distribution outside the Mac App Store, Apple describes signing code, creating a distribution container, and notarizing it. Apple: Notarizing macOS software before distribution.
The exact signing sequence depends on the app’s nested code and packaging choices. Apple’s Technical Note TN2206 is a historical code-signing note from 2015; its discussion of Gatekeeper and dynamic libraries reflects the versions it addresses, not necessarily present-day behavior. Apple Technical Note TN2206. Follow current Apple documentation for the supported macOS and Xcode versions in your release workflow.
Quick Recap
How do you verify the app is relocatable?
- Inspect the distributed app payload, not only an intermediate build.
- Check the main executable and every bundled Mach-O library for absolute third-party references.
- Verify that each
@rpathdependency has a usable run path in its loading context. - Confirm that every required library is inside the app bundle in an appropriate location.
- After all load-command changes, sign the final code and complete the relevant distribution and notarization steps.
- Test the packaged app from a different location than the build path on a supported Mac, then investigate any remaining loader errors against the exact binary and dependency named.
