First check whether the broadcast actually ended. If you see “Video paused. Continue watching?”, YouTube paused playback for an inactivity check; that does not mean the lofi stream went offline. If the stream is offline for everyone, check YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages and copyright status instead. The right fix depends on which of those symptoms you have.
Identify what stopped before changing settings
Check the screen and, if possible, ask another viewer to open the stream. A viewer’s playback can stop while the creator’s broadcast remains live. These symptoms point to different causes:
- “Video paused. Continue watching?” YouTube’s inactivity prompt. Choose “Yes” to resume. With Autoplay enabled, YouTube Help says this prompt appears after 30 minutes of uninterrupted viewing on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV. YouTube explains that it is meant to protect watch history and help avoid using data when someone is not actually watching. These timings are from YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026; the page does not show a publication date. YouTube Help: Why YouTube asks, “Continue watching?”
- Autoplay stops without the prompt. YouTube says Autoplay stops automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity on mobile data or four hours on Wi-Fi. Check the viewing device and connection type; these limits describe viewer playback, not a creator’s live broadcast. YouTube Help: Autoplay videos
- Spinning indicator, repeated buffering, or quality drops. This points to playback or network trouble rather than the inactivity check. Network congestion and broadcast delay can affect live playback. YouTube notes that lower broadcast delay means less buffer and can increase the chance of interruptions. - The stream is offline for all viewers. Treat this as a creator-side broadcast issue. Inspect the stream’s timestamped health messages in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A music stream disappears or is terminated. Check YouTube Studio for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and detected content can interrupt or terminate a broadcast.
If only your playback stopped
Respond to the inactivity prompt
When the prompt appears, select “Yes” to continue watching. It is an intentional playback pause, not evidence that the creator’s stream has ended. The prompt’s timing depends on whether you are watching on mobile, the web, or TV, as listed above.
Check Autoplay and the connection
If playback stops without the prompt, check whether Autoplay is enabled and whether the viewing device is on mobile data or Wi-Fi. The inactivity periods differ by connection type. If the player buffers or repeatedly lowers quality, try a more stable connection. Where the player offers a less aggressive low-latency option, try it; lower delay leaves less buffer and may make interruptions more likely.

If the broadcast itself went offline
Read the timestamped stream-health message
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the health messages at the time the stream failed. Use the specific message to choose the next step rather than assuming the encoder or computer is at fault. YouTube’s diagnostic documentation includes insufficient video output, unsupported encoding, and keyframes sent too infrequently as possible issues; insufficient output can cause buffering. - Insufficient video output: Check whether the encoder or streaming setup is still sending video consistently. Correct the output problem indicated by Studio.
- Unsupported encoding: Compare the encoder’s output format with YouTube’s supported configuration and adjust the encoder accordingly.
- Keyframes too infrequent: Correct the keyframe interval in the encoder to match YouTube’s requirements shown for the stream.
The health message is the evidence to act on; do not replace equipment or change unrelated settings without a matching diagnosis.

Check copyright and channel status for music streams
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects such content. Even music you have licensed can be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Review Studio’s notices and strikes, confirm the relevant rights, and ask the rights owner about allowlisting where applicable. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams

The 12-hour figure is not evidence of a general rule that YouTube ends live broadcasts after a few hours. YouTube’s guidance discusses limits on DVR and archiving: DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and the setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Those are recording and rewind considerations, not a stated universal live-stream cutoff. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams

Troubleshooting checklist
- Only one viewer sees a pause: Check for the “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt and resume playback.
- Autoplay ends without a prompt: Check the device and connection type; YouTube’s stated inactivity limits differ between mobile data and Wi-Fi.
- Playback buffers or quality falls: Check network stability and, if available, try a less aggressive low-latency choice in the player.
- All viewers see the broadcast offline: Read Live Control Room health messages and correct the specific output, encoding, or keyframe issue they identify.
- A music broadcast is interrupted: Check Studio for copyright or Community Guidelines notices and verify licensing and Content ID allowlist status.
