First, check whether the live broadcast actually stopped or only its replay is missing. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in an automatic archive; that is an archive limitation, not evidence of a universal 12-hour cutoff for live broadcasts. If viewers lost the live picture, investigate the encoder, network, stream key, event settings, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
What YouTube’s 12-hour warning means
YouTube Help says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The warning concerns automatic archiving. It does not establish that YouTube automatically ends every broadcast at 12 hours. YouTube also recommends recording a local archive as a backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Replay availability and live availability are separate questions. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, but that limitation alone does not mean the live broadcast has to end. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams
Identify what went offline
Before changing settings, establish whether the encoder stopped sending, YouTube stopped receiving the feed, the live event ended, or only the archive or DVR behavior changed. Note the time viewers lost the picture and compare it with the event status and timestamped messages in YouTube Live Control Room.

- Live picture disappeared: Treat this as a transmission or event problem. Check the encoder, connection, stream configuration, and YouTube health messages.
- Live picture continued, but no replay appeared or the replay is incomplete: Treat this as an archive problem. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured automatically; use the local recording if you need the complete program.
- Rewind is unavailable: This may be a DVR limitation on a very long stream, not proof that the live broadcast ended.
Compare the encoder’s logs and timestamps with whether the local recording file kept growing. If the file grew while YouTube showed the event offline, the source may have continued while the feed to YouTube failed. If the file stopped growing, the encoder or its host may have stopped. These clues narrow the failure point; they do not by themselves prove its cause. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend monitoring the stream and verifying that local archive files are growing.
Troubleshoot the stream in order
- Record the outage time and inspect Live Control Room. Note when viewers lost the stream and when YouTube marked the event offline or ended. Review timestamped stream-health messages and any displayed error. This gives you evidence to compare with the encoder and local recording. YouTube streaming tips
- Check the encoder and local recording. Confirm the encoder process was still running at the outage time. Review its logs and resource behavior, then check whether the local archive file continued to grow. If the encoder or file stopped, investigate the host, encoder process, and any resource or software errors before relaunching.
- Check the outbound connection and upload capacity. Make sure available upload bandwidth has headroom beyond the stream’s bitrate, and look for connection disruptions. YouTube notes that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. If you use a backup encoder, verify that failover actually works rather than assuming it will take over. YouTube streaming tips
- Verify the stream destination and key. Check that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and key and is associated with the intended event. A stream key is a credential used to send the feed; do not share or publish it. Review YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Review event automation settings. Check whether auto-start or auto-stop settings could have started or ended the event unexpectedly. Confirm the event state in Live Control Room as well as the encoder’s state. YouTube Help: manage live stream settings
- Separate an archive problem from a transmission problem. If the live event ended normally but the replay is absent or incomplete, preserve the local recording. YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured automatically. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
- Escalate with specific evidence. If your source and connection appear healthy but Live Control Room reports an ingest or platform error, contact YouTube support if available. Include the exact error, event and outage timestamps, and relevant encoder evidence. Without those logs and account-side data, general guidance cannot identify the cause of an individual outage.
Keep a long-running stream recoverable
For unattended streams, plan for both continuity and replay preservation. Monitor stream health, keep a local recording when the full program matters, and test encoder failover before relying on it. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend allowing upload-bandwidth headroom, monitoring the stream, and testing failover. Its archive guidance recommends a local backup because a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured automatically.

A local drive can help preserve a recording, but it will not repair a failed connection or keep YouTube ingest online. Choose recording capacity based on your bitrate and how long you need to retain files; no single drive size suits every stream.
