A page that turns blank after appearing to load is usually isolated by three tests: does another site work, does the page fail in another browser, and does it work in a private window? Those results separate a site outage from a browser profile problem, an extension or script blocker, and a wider network or device fault. Run those checks before resetting the browser or installing anything.

This guide starts with the fastest decision tree, then gives browser, site-data, JavaScript, and connection fixes. Menu names can vary by operating system and browser version.

Use this decision tree first

What you test Result Most useful next step
Open two unrelated websites Several are blank or fail Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet, captive-portal sign-in, DNS, VPN/proxy, security software, and system time.
Open the affected site in another browser It works elsewhere Investigate the original browser’s extensions, stored data, tracking protection, or rendering settings.
Open the site in another browser It is blank everywhere The site, account, network, or a shared security filter may be responsible.
Open a private or Incognito window It works privately Normal-profile cookies, cached files, site permissions, or an extension are interfering.
Open a private or Incognito window It is still blank Continue with site settings and connection checks; a private window narrows the possibilities but does not identify one exact cause.

Reload once before each comparison. If only one website fails in multiple browsers, its owner may need to repair the page. If many sites fail in every browser, involve your network administrator or internet provider after checking your local connection.

1. Test the browser profile with a private window

Private windows use a temporary profile, so they are a quick way to distinguish normal-profile data from a site or network problem.

  1. Chrome: open the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito window, or press Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+N (macOS).
  2. Firefox: open the application menu and choose New Private Window, or press Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+P (macOS).
  3. Edge: open the three-dot menu and choose New InPrivate window.
  4. Safari: choose File > New Private Window.

Enter the address manually in the private window. If the page appears, leave the private window open and proceed to extension and site-data isolation in your normal window. If it remains blank, do not assume the private result proves the website is healthy; continue to the next branch.

2. Disable extensions long enough to identify a conflict

Ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, VPN extensions, and appearance modifiers can prevent a page’s application code or styles from running. Test briefly, then restore protection.

Chrome and Edge

  1. Open the extensions menu (the puzzle-piece icon), choose Manage extensions, and switch off extensions temporarily.
  2. Reload the affected page with Ctrl+R or Command+R.
  3. If it works, turn extensions on one at a time and reload after each change. The extension enabled immediately before the failure returns is the likely conflict.

Firefox

  1. Open the application menu, choose Add-ons and themes, then Extensions.
  2. Use each extension’s toggle to disable it temporarily and reload the page.
  3. Re-enable extensions individually to identify the one involved.

Do not leave security or privacy extensions disabled as a permanent workaround. Instead, add a narrowly scoped site exception only if you trust the site and the extension offers that control.

3. Clear only the affected site’s cookies and stored data

A stale cache, mismatched cookie, or corrupted local storage entry can leave a single site with a blank interface. Clearing that site’s data is safer than deleting the entire browser history, but it can sign you out and remove saved state such as a cart.

Chrome or Edge

  1. Open the affected page and select the site-controls icon to the left of the address bar.
  2. Open Site settings, then use the option to delete or clear data for that site. In some versions, choose Cookies and site data first.
  3. Close the settings tab, reload the page, and sign in again if requested.

Firefox

  1. Open the affected page and select the padlock icon at the left of the address bar.
  2. Choose Clear cookies and site data (or the similarly named site-data option), confirm, and reload.

If clearing the site fixes the problem, the old session or cached application files were implicated. If it does not, avoid repeatedly deleting all browsing data; move to script and connection checks instead.

4. Check JavaScript, tracking protection, and page permissions

Interactive pages commonly need JavaScript to build their visible interface. A blocker, strict tracking protection, antivirus web filter, or restrictive site permission can stop those scripts. Check the browser’s site-controls panel and your extension list for blocked scripts or requests.

  • In Chrome or Edge, open the site-controls icon, choose Site settings, and verify that JavaScript is allowed for the affected site.
  • In Firefox, select the shield icon and review Enhanced Tracking Protection for the site. Temporarily test the standard protection level only if you trust the page, then restore your preferred setting.
  • Review script-blocking or privacy extensions for a per-site block list and remove only the rule affecting this site.

Mozilla documents that JavaScript is enabled by default in Firefox and cautions that changing advanced preferences can affect stability, security, and performance. Do not edit hidden configuration values as a first-line fix. If a corporate security product controls script execution, ask its administrator for a site-specific review.

5. Check whether the page is rendering but hidden

When the tab title changes and the address bar stops loading but the viewport is white, the document may have loaded while its application failed. A quick visual test can distinguish a browser rendering issue from a server response:

  1. Press Ctrl+U (Windows/Linux) or Command+Option+U (macOS) to view the page source, if the browser permits it. If source text is present, the server returned a document even though the interface did not render.
  2. Open Developer Tools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I/Command+Option+I, select Console, and reload. Note the first red error, blocked-resource message, or failed network request rather than copying passwords or tokens.
  3. In the Network panel, look for requests with status 4xx, 5xx, blocked, or (failed). A single failed JavaScript bundle often explains a blank single-page application.

These observations are evidence for the site’s owner or your IT team; they are not a reason to disable browser security globally.

6. If several sites fail, troubleshoot the connection

When unrelated sites fail across browsers, broaden the scope beyond the browser.

Verify the local link and captive portal

  • Confirm Wi-Fi is connected or the Ethernet cable is seated. Test another device on the same network if available.
  • On public Wi-Fi, open a new tab and complete the network’s sign-in page. Until that portal is accepted, normal sites may appear empty or fail.
  • Restart a modem or router only when you are authorized to do so and the outage affects multiple devices.

Check VPN, proxy, DNS, and security software

  • Temporarily disconnect a VPN or review the configured proxy, then retry. Restore it after the test.
  • Security software and firewalls can block DNS, scripts, or TLS traffic. Do not leave them disabled; ask the administrator to inspect logs or create a narrow exception.
  • If Chrome displays an error code, its common-error guidance can help distinguish DNS failures, timeouts, connection resets, and empty responses. Record the exact code before contacting support.

Check system time

An incorrect date, time, or time zone can invalidate HTTPS certificates and authentication. Enable automatic time synchronization, restart the browser, and test again.

7. Choose the right escalation

  • One site, one browser: provide the browser version, private-window result, extension test, and console error to your IT team or the browser vendor.
  • One site, every browser: contact the website owner with the URL, approximate time, device, network, and any HTTP error shown. The site may be serving broken code or rejecting your account or region.
  • Many sites, every browser: contact the network administrator or ISP after confirming the local connection, captive portal, VPN/proxy, DNS, security software, and system time.

A browser reset or reinstall is a later option, not the first one. Before resetting, export passwords, bookmarks, and other data you need; a reset can remove custom settings and extensions without fixing a server-side outage.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an objective image of what a page returns from a clean browser session—for example, to attach evidence to a support ticket—you can use ScreenshotNeo. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Use the one-call API documented at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Replace the example URL with the page you are diagnosing. ScreenshotNeo also provides full-page captures with lazy images loaded, element selectors, device and viewport controls, custom CSS or JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, PDF output, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, usage data, and an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI clients such as Claude or Cursor.

Every feature is included on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. You can sign up for the free plan and use the captured result to show whether the page is blank for an external clean session or only in your local browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an ad blocker cause a completely white page?

Yes. If the page works when the blocker is disabled, re-enable it and create a narrowly scoped exception only if you trust the site; do not leave protection off globally.

Should I clear all browser history to fix a blank page?

Usually no. Clear the affected site’s cookies and stored data first because deleting everything can remove unrelated sessions and saved state.

What information should I include when reporting the problem?

Include the exact URL, date and time, browser and device, whether private mode and another browser worked, your network type, and any first Console or HTTP error.

The Bottom Line

Start by comparing one site with many and one browser with several, then test a private window. Extension isolation and clearing only the affected site’s data resolve profile conflicts without destroying unrelated settings. If the failure follows every browser, investigate JavaScript blocking and the network; if it follows only one site, give the owner reproducible details rather than repeatedly resetting your device.
